Transonic wind-tunnel tests of an F-8 airplane model equipped with 12 and 14-percent thick oblique wings
An experimental investigation was conducted in the Ames 14-foot transonic wind tunnel to study the aerodynamic performance and stability characteristics of a 0.087-scale model of an F-8 airplane fitted with an oblique wing. Two elliptical planform (axis ratio = 8:1) wings, each having a maximum thickness of 12 and 14 percent, were tested. Longitudinal stability data were obtained with no wing and with each of the two wings set at sweep angles of 0, 45, and 60 deg. Lateral directional stability data were obtained for the 12 percent wing only. Test Mach numbers ranged from 0.6 to 1.2 in the unit Reynolds number range from 11.2 to 13.1 million per meter. Angles of attack were between -6 and 22 deg at zero sideslip. Angles of sideslip were between -6 and +6 deg for two angles of attack, depending upon the wing configuration
Enter Bugs Bunny: Matador and Star in Bully for Bugs [LA ALTERNATIVA DE BUGS BUNNY, MATADOR Y ESTRELLA EN “BULLY FOR BUGS” (CHUCK JONES, 1953)]
In Disney’s 1922 Laugh-O-Grams cartoon Puss in Boots, there’s a scene a third of the way through in
which the protagonist (named simply ‘The Boy’), despondent at the King’s disapproval of him as a
match for his daughter, is persuaded by his feline friend Puss to visit the local cinema. There, they
watch a cartoon billed ‘RODOLPH VASELINO In THROWING THE BULL In Six Parts’, the title of which
unmistakably alludes to Rudolph Valentino’s starring role in the silent version of Blood and Sand
(1922). Here, the cartoonalising of Valentino as Vaselino and the young boy’s emulation of this star
by becoming a masked matador who ends up having to rely on hypnotic help from Puss to defeat
the bull comically deflates this actor’s privileged status as human star by re-presenting him within a
form (animation) traditionally regarded as the poor relation to live action cinema. As such, this
cartoon skit of Valentino in Blood and Sand illustrates animation’s penchant for ‘import[ing] […] nonanimated movie star trappings to re-perform the artifice of stardom’, using ‘parody and creative reperformances of “straight” stardom’

Central issues in the law of tort defences
This book is the first part of an investigation into defences in private law. The present volume explores tort law defences. Three further volumes are planned, on unjust enrichment, contract and equity. The chapters that constitute the present volume were delivered at a workshop at All Souls College, Oxford in January 2014. In helping to bring the workshop to fruition, we are grateful, first and foremost, for the support of All Souls College, which provided both the setting for the proceedings and significant financial support. The workshop could not have gone ahead without the further financial assistance of the Oxford Law Faculty and the University of Oxford’s Fell Fund. We were also able to call on several members of the Faculty—both administrative and academic—for guidance. Discussions at the workshop were greatly enriched by the contributions of several observers, including Lord Hoffmann, Timothy Endicott and John Gardner and, on behalf of the Law Commission, Sir David Lloyd-Jones and David Hertzell. Finally, Anna Kim’s patience and efficiency helped immeasurably in the lead up to the workshop. For their assistance in helping to turn the workshop papers into the chapters that feature in this volume, we are grateful to Jodi Gardner, Elizabeth Houghton, Krishnaprasad Kizhakkevalappil, Niranjan Venkatesan and Binesh Hass. We are indebted to Hart Publishing for their editorial assistance, and in particular to Richard Hart for the characteristic enthusiasm and professionalism with which he embraced the project as a whole. Finally, we are grateful to Lord Hoffmann for generously agreeing to write the Foreword
The Australian Charter of Employment Rights: The missing dimensions
Just prior to the 2007 General Election, a group of labour lawyers and economists, broadly sympathetic to the Labor Party, produced a Charter of Employment Rights. This article examines the Charter's proposals and its underlying framework, and suggests significant aspects of work and labour have been omitted. It contends that the Charter would have been improved if it had not retained an artificially stretched definition of workers as employees, in which the only relationship worthy of inclusion in a Charter is that between the direct employer and employee. The framework and language of the Charter convey a paternalistic approach and an outdated focus on industrial labour, while ignoring aspects of the emerging global system of work linked to the concept of occupation
