Dual-processing altruism
Altruism refers to an other-benefiting behavior that is costly but bears no direct profit to oneself. At least three different forms can be distinguished: help giving, altruistic punishment, and moral courage. We investigated the differential impact of two thinking modes, intuitive (System 1) and rational (System 2), on these three altruistic behaviors. Situational (state-related) thinking style was manipulated via experimental instructions and generally preferred thinking style (trait-related) was assessed via questionnaires. We found that of the subjectively preferred thinking styles (trait), faith in intuition (System 1) promoted sharing and altruistic punishment, whereas need for cognition (System 2) promoted volunteering in a situation that required moral courage. By contrast, we did not find a significant effect of situational thinking style (state) on any of the altruistic behaviors, although manipulation checks were positive. Results elucidate the affective-motivational underpinnings of different types of altruistic behaviors
Linear Systems over Join-Blank Algebras
A central problem of linear algebra is solving linear systems. Regarding
linear systems as equations over general semirings (V,otimes,oplus,0,1) instead
of rings or fields makes traditional approaches impossible. Earlier work shows
that the solution space X(A;w) of the linear system Av = w over the class of
semirings called join-blank algebras is a union of closed intervals (in the
product order) with a common terminal point. In the smaller class of max-blank
algebras, the additional hypothesis that the solution spaces of the 1x1 systems
Av = w are closed intervals implies that X(A;w) is a finite union of closed
intervals. We examine the general case, proving that without this additional
hypothesis, we can still make X(A;w) into a finite union of quasi-intervals

Recycling of inorganic waste in monolithic and cellular glass-based materials for structural and functional applications
The stabilization of inorganic waste of various nature and origin, in glasses, has been a key strategy for environmental protection for the last decades. When properly formulated, glasses may retain many inorganic contaminants permanently, but it must be acknowledged that some criticism remains, mainly concerning costs and energy use. As a consequence, the sustainability of vitrification largely relies on the conversion of waste glasses into new, usable and marketable glass-based materials, in the form of monolithic and cellular glass-ceramics. The effective conversion in turn depends on the simultaneous control of both starting materials and manufacturing processes. While silica-rich waste favours the obtainment of glass, iron-rich wastes affect the functionalities, influencing the porosity in cellular glass-based materials as well as catalytic, magnetic, optical and electrical properties. Engineered formulations may lead to important reductions of processing times and temperatures, in the transformation of waste-derived glasses into glass-ceramics, or even bring interesting shortcuts. Direct sintering of wastes, combined with recycled glasses, as an example, has been proven as a valid low-cost alternative for glass-ceramic manufacturing, for wastes with limited hazardousness. Lipoleiomyomas are uncommon benign neoplasms of uterus consisting of variable portions of mature lipocytes and smooth muscle cells. These tumours generally occur in asymptomatic obese perimenopausal or menopausal women. In this paper, a case of lipoleiomyoma uteri in a 53-year old menopausal woman is presented.peer-reviewe

La traduzione letteraria turco-catalano
Quando si considera la relazione letteraria stabilita tra il turco e il catalano per mezzo della traduzione appare con evidenza la scarsità dei frutti di questa. Effettivamente, esistono solo due opere tradotte dal catalano al turco mentre, in lingua catalana, troviamo alcune poesie tradotte dal turco. Le altre pochissime opere tradotte sono state trasferite da una lingua intermedia. Si nota che nelle traduzioni dal catalano al turco si utilizza generalmente la versione spagnola intermedia, invece in quelle catalane si preferisce più spesso l'inglese. Attraverso una panoramica sulla storia della traduzione nella tradizione letteraria turca e catalana, questo articolo aspira a spiegare le possibili ragioni della mancanza di opere tradotte dal catalano al turco o viceversa, soffermandosi sugli orientamenti particolari dell'attività traduttiva delle due lingue.When the literary relation built between the Catalan and the Turkish through translation are taken into consideration, the scarcity of the translated works stands out as particularly important. As a direct translation between two languages, there are only two literary works translated from Catalan into Turkish and few poems translated from Turkish into Catalan. In the translations from either language, a third language is largely used as an intermediary. While Turkish translations from Catalan are mostly done through the mediation of Spanish, English comes to be the largely preferred intermediary language in the translations from Turkish into Catalan. By discussing the history of translation in both literary traditions, this paper aims at rethinking the possible reasons behind such a scarcity by focusing on the distinguishing orientations of translation in both languages
