A Taxonomy of Self-configuring Service Discovery Systems
We analyze the fundamental concepts and issues in service
discovery. This analysis places service discovery in the context of distributed
systems by describing service discovery as a third generation
naming system. We also describe the essential architectures and the
functionalities in service discovery. We then proceed to show how service
discovery fits into a system, by characterizing operational aspects.
Subsequently, we describe how existing state of the art performs service
discovery, in relation to the operational aspects and functionalities, and
identify areas for improvement
On consistency maintenance in service discovery
Communication and node failures degrade the ability of a service discovery protocol to ensure Users receive the correct service information when the service changes. We propose that service discovery protocols employ a set of recovery techniques to recover from failures and regain consistency. We use simulations to show that the type of recovery technique a protocol uses significantly impacts the performance. We benchmark the performance of our own service discovery protocol, FRODO against the performance of first generation service discovery protocols, Jini and UPnP during increasing communication and node failures. The results show that FRODO has the best overall consistency maintenance performance
The Performance of a Second Generation Service Discovery Protocol In Response to Message Loss
We analyze the behavior of FRODO, a second generation service discovery protocol, in response to message loss in the network. Earlier protocols, like UPnP and Jini rely on underlying network layers to enhance their failure recovery. A comparison with UPnP and Jini shows that FRODO performs more efficiently in maintaining consistency, with shorter latency, not relying on lower network layers for robustness and therefore functions correctly on a simple lightweight protocol stack
Service discovery at home
Service discovery is a fairly new field that kicked off since the advent of ubiquitous computing and has been found essential in the making of intelligent networks by implementing automated discovery and remote control between devices. This paper provides an overview and comparison of several prominent service discovery mechanisms currently available. It also introduces the at home anywhere service discovery protocol (SDP@HA) design which improves on the current state of the art by accommodating resource lean devices, implementing a dynamic leader election for a central cataloguing device and embedding robustness to the service discovery architecture as an important criterion
Exploring the Design of Pay-Per-Use Objects in the Construction Domain
Equipment used in the construction domain is often hired in order to reduce cost and maintenance overhead. The cost of hire is dependent on the time period involved and does not take into account the actual use equipment has received. This paper presents our initial investigation into how physical objects augmented with sensing and communication technologies can measure use in order to enable new pay-per-use payment models for equipment hire. We also explore user interaction with pay-per-use objects via mobile devices. The user interactions that take place within our prototype scenario range from simple information access to transactions involving multiple users. This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a prototype pay-per-use system motivated by a real world equipment hire scenario. We also provide insights into the various challenges introduced by supporting a pay-per-use model, including data storage and data security in addition to user interaction issues
Urban Kano Insecurity: A Study Proposal of Five Factor Analysis
Fear, anxiety and hopeless future are some major characteristics in most parts of the developing world. Perhaps the genesis is traced to poor public leadership. This gives rise to absence of rule of law. As a societal pillar, poor governance results in other negative effects such as unemployment, poverty, law enforcement corruption and police inadequacies. These factors are alleged to be most significant in triggering societal insecurity. It is in this context that the literature argued on the impact of these factors in causing human insecurity. The write up is a proposal paper of a PhD research being conducted in urban Kano, Nigeria. Although there are numerous issues related but these five are considered to be the most crucial. Hence, the findings are expected to indicate possible relationship with insecurity of urban Kano. The research is to be guided by Broken Windows theory (Wilson and Kelling, 1982). Meanwhile, innovative solutions may need to be initiated. An obligation that demands the participation of the general public
