A manifesto for Web Science
A clarion call for a new research agenda has been sounded, notably by Berners-Lee et al (2006a 2006b) and Hendler et al (2008) for a ‘science of decentralised information systems’ to ‘discover’ generative mechanisms, and synthesise knowledge and technology to push both forwards. Computer Science alone - focussing as it does on the engineering/technology of the web - could not deliver the ambitions of this new agenda. Equally, other disciplines implicated in Web Science might use the web to support their research, or be interested in virtual life, but they lacked a coherent or unifying mandate for engaging with the web. By calling for Web Science these pioneers opened up a new space. But this is uncharted terrain. As a technology the web is still new. While it has grown rapidly and unexpectedly we are only just beginning to think about the web as a phenomena to be studied. The proponents of Web Science had the vision to see that this new approach had to include disciplines beyond their own; it had to be greater than the sum of the parts of individual disciplines. This is a radical call to leave disciplinary silos and work collaboratively to produce something bigger and better. Moreover, it takes in the founding principles of the web and a desire for a web that is pro-human: this is a call for a science that is capable of insight and intervention to create a better world. Our paper aims to take up this challenge and suggests how we might map the Web Science terrain. We come at this from a slightly different direction to the web science pioneers and want to demonstrate how social science can, and indeed must, contribute to developing Web Science. This paper will explore the contribution of social theory and sociological concepts that shape how we engage with the web. We focus on four key aspects which seem to be central to this understanding. Firstly co-constitution, the fact that the web both shapes and is shaped by humans/society. Secondly the importance of heterogeneous networks of multiple and diverse actors (including technologies themselves) that make the web as we know it. Thirdly the significance of performativity, that the web is an unfolding, enacted practice, as people interact with http to build ‘the web’ moment by moment. Finally, drawing these ideas together we see the web we have now as an immutable mobile or temporarily stabilised network. We use these ideas to map what web science could be and to suggest how we might use sociology to understand the web. Our aim is to provoke and stimulate debate and to move beyond superficial popular psychology and sociology (which envisages engineering human behaviour) and to challenge some of the ways in which social science has engaged with technology and technical actors. Using mixed methods to track the growth of the Web: tracing open government data initiatives
In recent years, there have been a rising number of Open Government Data (OGD) initiatives; a political, social and technical movement armed with a common goal of publishing government data in open, re-usable formats in order to improve citizen-to-government transparency, efficiency, and democracy. As a sign of commitment, the Open Government Partnership was formed, comprising of a collection of countries striving to achieve OGD. Since its initial launch, the number of countries committed to adopting an Open Government Data agenda has grown to more than 50; including countries from South America to the Far East.Current approaches to understanding Web initiatives such as OGD are still being developed. Methodologies grounded in multidisciplinarity are still yet to be achieved; typically research follows a social or technological approach underpinned by quantitative or qualitative methods, and rarely combining the two into a single analytical framework. In this paper, a mixed methods approach will be introduced, which uses qualitative data underpinned by sociological theory to complement a quantitative analysis using computer science techniques. This method aims to provide an alternative approach to understanding the socio-technical activities of the Web. To demonstrate this, the activities of the UK Open Government Data initiative will be explored using a range of quantitative and qualitative data, examining the activities of the community, to provide a rich analysis of the formation and development of the UK OGD community

Emergent and Early Literacy Opportunities for Children with Visual Impairment With/Without an Additional Disability
Introduction: This study examined implications of literacy instruction for children with visual impairment (VI) with/without an additional disability at a specialized preschool in a large Midwestern city. Methods: Teachers participated in interviews and revealed their perspectives for providing literacy instruction, and students were video recorded participating in literacy activities. Literacy opportunities were coded for themes. Results: Six themes of literacy opportunities emerged from this study (i.e., literacy opportunities, accessibility, frequency, assessment, settings, and cues for understanding). Results provide evidence of instructional strategies, challenges and strengths described by teachers, types of activities used to promote literacy and the frequency and accessibility of literacy opportunities delivered. Activities include opportunities to read, write, and practice phonological awareness, and embedded opportunities to read and/or write Discussion: Perspective of expectations and barriers from teachers enlighten strengths and challenges faced when working to develop literacy skills for children with VI with/without an additional disability. Student outcomes for participation in literacy opportunities provided are reported. Implications for Practitioners: Collaboration is necessary among educators and service provides to provide the best opportunities for children with VI to learn to read and write. The instructional strategies, types of activities, frequency and accessibility to literacy opportunities used could generalize to other environments.

Implementing Dansereau\u27s MURDER Technique to Teach Learning Disabled Students
High School learning disabled students were taught prefix and suffix meanings from an adaption of Donald Dansereau\u27s MURDER strategy in cooperative learning groups. Two groups participated in a two week long study, with only one group using the MURDER strategy. The results were measured with post-test scores in a Pearson product moment correlation matrix and indicated that there was no correlation between using the MURDER strategy and being taught with standardized worksheets. However, students who were engaged in the MURDER technique, scored higher on their post-tests than those who did not. In addition, the students scored higher between pretests and post-tests after learning the strategy
The views of general practitioners and practice nurses towards the barriers and facilitators of proactive, internet-based chlamydia screening for reaching young heterosexual men
Background:
Chlamydia trachomatis is a common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI), which disproportionately affects young people under 25 years. Commonly, more women are offered screening than men. This study obtained the views of general practitioners and practice nurses towards Internet-based screening and assessed levels of support for the development of proactive screening targeting young heterosexual men via the Internet.
Methods:
Semi-structured telephone interviews with 10 general practitioners and 8 practice nurses, across Central Scotland. Topics covered: experience of screening heterosexual men for chlamydia, views on the use of the Internet as a way to reach young men for chlamydia screening, beliefs about the potential barriers and facilitators to Internet-based screening. Transcripts from audio recordings were analysed with Framework Analysis, using QSR NVivo10.
Results:
Experiences of chlamydia screening were almost exclusively with women, driven by the nature of consultations and ease of raising sexual health issues with female patients; few practice nurses reported seeing men during consultations. All participants spoke in favour of Internet-based screening for young men. Participants reported ease of access and convenience as potential facilitators of an Internet-based approach but anonymity and confidentiality could be potential barriers and facilitators to the success of an Internet approach to screening. Concerns over practical issues as well as those pertaining to gender and socio-cultural issues were raised.
Conclusions:
Awareness of key barriers and facilitators, such as confidentiality, practicality and socio-cultural influences, will inform the development of an Internet-based approach to screening. However, this approach may have its limits in terms of being able to tackle wider social and cultural barriers, along with shifts in young people's and health professionals' attitudes towards screening. Nevertheless, employing innovative efforts as part of a multi-faceted approach is required to ensure effective interventions reach the policy agenda
Exposure to Online Classes as Determinant of Student Perceptions
There is little research comparing the perceptions of university students who have been, and have never been, exposed to online classes. We show that about half the students surveyed, who have never taken online classes, have done so intentionally. We measure the perceptions of both groups of students along ten dimensions. The three dimensions along which the exposed students had a significantly favorable perception were a) the extent to which online classes utilize teaching materials personally created or structured by professors, b) the extent to which students feel frustrated by technology, and c) the benefit of interactions with fellow classmates
Leg disorders in broiler chickens : prevalence, risk factors and prevention
Broiler (meat) chickens have been subjected to intense genetic selection. In the past 50 years, broiler growth rates have increased
by over 300% (from 25 g per day to 100 g per day). There is growing societal concern that many broiler chickens have impaired
locomotion or are even unable to walk. Here we present the results of a comprehensive survey of commercial flocks which
quantifies the risk factors for poor locomotion in broiler chickens.We assessed the walking ability of 51,000 birds, representing 4.8
million birds within 176 flocks.We also obtained information on approximately 150 different management factors associated with
each flock. At a mean age of 40 days, over 27.6% of birds in our study showed poor locomotion and 3.3% were almost unable to
walk. The high prevalence of poor locomotion occurred despite culling policies designed to remove severely lame birds from
flocks. We show that the primary risk factors associated with impaired locomotion and poor leg health are those specifically
associated with rate of growth. Factors significantly associated with high gait score included the age of the bird (older birds), visit
(second visit to same flock), bird genotype, not feeding whole wheat, a shorter dark period during the day, higher stocking density
at the time of assessment, no use of antibiotic, and the use of intact feed pellets. The welfare implications are profound. Worldwide
approximately 261010 broilers are reared within similar husbandry systems.We identify a range of management factors that could
be altered to reduce leg health problems, but implementation of these changes would be likely to reduce growth rate and
production. A debate on the sustainability of current practice in the production of this important food source is required
Ambient Air Pollution and Cancer Mortality in the Cancer Prevention Study II
BACKGROUND: The International Agency for Research on Cancer
classified both outdoor air pollution and airborne particulate
matter as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) for lung cancer.
There may be associations with cancer at other sites; however,
the epidemiological evidence is limited. OBJECTIVE: The aim of
this study was to clarify whether ambient air pollution is
associated with specific types of cancer other than lung cancer
by examining associations of ambient air pollution with nonlung
cancer death in the Cancer Prevention Study II (CPS-II).
METHODS: Analysis included 623,048 CPS-II participants who were
followed for 22 y (1982-2004). Modeled estimates of particulate
matter with aerodynamic diameter <2.5microm (PM2.5)
(1999-2004), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) (2006), and ozone (O3)
(2002-2004) concentrations were linked to the participant
residence at enrollment. Cox proportional hazards models were
used to estimate associations per each fifth percentile-mean
increment with cancer mortality at 29 anatomic sites, adjusted
for individual and ecological covariates. RESULTS: We observed
43,320 nonlung cancer deaths. PM2.5 was significantly positively
associated with death from cancers of the kidney {adjusted
hazard ratio (HR) per 4.4 mug/m3=1.14 [95% confidence interval
(CI): 1.03, 1.27]} and bladder [HR=1.13 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.23)].
NO2 was positively associated with colorectal cancer mortality
[HR per 6.5 ppb=1.06 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.10). The results were
similar in two-pollutant models including PM2.5 and NO2 and in
three-pollutant models with O3. We observed no statistically
significant positive associations with death from other types of
cancer based on results from adjusted models. CONCLUSIONS: The
results from this large prospective study suggest that ambient
air pollution was not associated with death from most nonlung
cancers, but associations with kidney, bladder, and colorectal
cancer death warrant further investigation.

The purpose of this theoretical paper is to explore the ethics in a community nursing. Nursing, a practice discipline recognizes caring, morals, and values as integral to the practice of all nurses. The ethical principles of beneficence, autonomy, advocacy, and social justice will be discussed from the lens of caring. Caring nursing theorists, such as Jean Watson, Ann Boykin, and Savina Schoenhofer, articulate the importance of understanding communities and individuals as whole and autonomous.
