    On asymptotically hereditarily aspherical groups

We undertake a systematic study of asymptotically hereditarily aspherical (AHA) groups - the class of groups introduced by Tadeusz Januszkiewicz and the second author as a tool for exhibiting exotic properties of systolic groups. We provide many new examples of AHA groups, also in high dimensions. We relate AHA property with the topology at infinity of a group, and deduce in this way some new properties of (weakly) systolic groups. We also exhibit an interesting property of boundary at infinity for few classes of AHA groups.Comment: 36 pages, minor modifications to v

Will the various proposals of the current reform of Polish labour law bring about and maintain a high level or professional activity among workers, while respecting their fundamental rights, as well as the principle of socialized ownership of the means of production? Dealing with wuch precise matters as, for instance, the function of the initial contract of employment, the status of the head of the undertaking and its relationship with self-management institutions, the worker's obligation to accomplish work not originally set forth in the contract of employment, or his faculty to pursue a side occupation, the author, in a more fundamental and global manner, discusses the role of labour law in defining and implementing a policy of employment in a socialist society. What is its specefic contribution, taking into account the place of other fields of law ? What is the influence of labour courts ? Above all, are not juridical norms called upon to play but a limited part here

Is whole-body trauma MDCT justified in patients in good clinical condition but with dangerous trauma mechanism?

Background: To assess whether whole body MDCT is justified in patients in good clinical condition yet with dangerous trauma mechanism. Material/Methods: The study included 81 patients who were examined between January and July 2008 with wholebody trauma CT protocol. Inclusion into the study was based on a dangerous trauma mechanism and the possibility of an unbiased calculation of the weighted revised trauma score (RTSw). All examinations were performed with 16 row MDCT scanner located in emergency department. The cut off of the RTSw over 6.0 was used to separate the patients in good clinical condition. The CT examinations and medical records of patients were reviewed to assess the number of significant injuries, the need for emergency surgery and other types of medical treatment, the number of negative CT examinations, the number of patients admitted to hospital, and mortality. Results: 28 life-threatening injuries were found in 21 of 61 patients with RTS over 6.0 (34.4%). Only two of those patients required emergency surgery (laparotomy). CT studies were negative for traumatic injuries in 22 patients from this group (36.0%). Conclusions: Whole-body MDCT may detect injuries in patients in good clinical condition, with some of them demanding medical treatment. Still, further studies are required to balance the advantages of MDCT and potentially harmful effects of radiation dose, especially better triage systems and lowdose protocols are needed

How to Think Constructivism? Ruskin, Spuybroek and Deleuze on Gothic Architecture

    Get PDF
In the Gothic architecture Lars Spuybroek discovers a vitalist ontology that allows him to rethink the nature of constructivism. The vitalist beauty emerges out of a particular field of material forces and is not an actualisation of a pre-given model. His analysis leads to a critique of the work of Deleuze and Guattari, who are portrayed as philosophers of the sublime. Their resistance to the signifying semiotics leads them too far. They unjustly claim that the Gothic structures emerge due to an affirmation of chaos and not in a careful process of construction. In my paper, I will nevertheless demonstrate that Spuybroek’s critique misses a fundamental point of their analysis. Only phantasms or spiritual becomings - concepts lacking in the analysis of Spuybroek - can allow for a proper appreciation of the Gothic and of the process of construction
