The relationship between organisational culture and financial performance: an exploratory study in a selected financial institution in South Africa

    Get PDF
This research investigates the relationship between organisational culture and financial performance in a selected financial services institution in South Africa. The banking sector as part of the financial services industry contributes to economic growth in the economy. The banking sector in South Africa is highly concentrated, but also highly competitive. It is important for banks to retain their competitiveness and increased global competition places further pressure on banks to perform financially in order to satisfy the demands of shareholders. The literature reviewed and previous studies both suggest that organisational culture is an important variable that influences organisational performance. For purposes of this research, organisational performance will be measured in terms of financial performance. The concepts of organisational culture and financial performance are discussed and a questionnaire based on Hall’s (1988) theory of organisational competence is used to determine the strength of the levels of the dimensions of competence as indicators of organisational culture within the selected financial institution. The financial performance of the branches within the organisation is determined by calculating certain selected financial performance ratios, namely cost-to-income ratio, cumulative leverage and contribution per employee. A correlation analysis is conducted in order to establish whether there is a statistically significant relationship between organisational culture and financial performance. A conclusion is drawn that there is a statistically significant relationship between the organisational culture and the financial performance of the branches of the selected institution and recommendations are made as to how financial performance can be improved by strengthening the dimensions of competence as indicators of organisational culture. These recommendations include specific actions that can be taken by leaders to improve commitment, collaboration and creativity

Introduction: Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD), malocclusions (MO) and dyslalias in children have been widely studied, but the existence of an exact relationship between them is still unclear. Considering the importance of a well-functioning stomatognathic system in preserving an adequate orofacial motricity, more clarity on the existence of these relationships is needed. Objective: To examine the interrelationship between OMD, MO and dyslalia in order to establish the importance of a transdisciplinary approach in the evaluation and treatment of orofacial motricity and malocclusions. Materials and methods: A research question was formulated, according to the PICOS Strategy. An advanced search with different keyword combinations was performed using the PubMed database. Articles published in English, Portuguese and Spanish between 2009 and 2022 were analysed. Results: 10 articles were included in the results table and a total of 26 articles were included in this integrative review. Discussion: The parafunctional habits that are associated with OMD, MO and dyslalia are closely linked. A transdisciplinary approach in the early identification and evaluation of these interrelationships is essential to devise the most effective treatment plan possible. Conclusion: The present integrative review suggests an interrelationship between DOMs, BMs and dyslexia. However, it seems essential that future research be done to clarify the exact relationship of this triad to improve care in the areas of odontopediatrics, orthodontics and speech therapy

This text addresses the exploitation of marine fauna from two capitalist industries: entertainment and commercial fishing. Based on particular expressions of both industries, such as cetaceans in captivity to give shows in water parks and hotel complexes, or shark fishing and the collateral damage it has on non-target species, as well as the generation of waste and plastics. These cases allow a general review of the repercussion of these economic activities in the ocean, both in the space or environment of marine species, as well as the physical and psychological effects on them. Situations of global size are taken up again with clear examples in Latin American countries to know the role they play and the position they have regarding these problems. In this way, the relationship between industries and marine fauna is revealed and recognized as a historical process that has been in progress for centuries in the form of cultural and economic activities. However, thanks to the technological advances of the 20th century, these were carried out on a massive scale and without measuring the consequences. Thus, marine conditions are proof of the latent Capitalocene.
