Metodologia de investigacion en entomologia de frijol
The general objectives of CIAT's bean entomology program are mentioned. The 1st priority has been given to var. resistance as an ideal pest control method. At CIAT's headquarters (Palmira, Colombia), studies are conducted on Empoasca kraemeri, mites, and storage insects; var. resistance to Apion godmani and Epinotia aporema is being studied at other institutions. The steps of genetic improvement of beans for resistance to E. kraemeri are described: selection of sources of resistance, hybridization of selected materials, and selection of resistant progenies. Folding and unfolding phylogenetic trees and networks
Phylogenetic networks are rooted, labelled directed acyclic graphs which are commonly used to represent reticulate evolution. There is a close relationship between phylogenetic networks and multi-labelled trees (MUL-trees). Indeed, any phylogenetic network can be "unfolded" to obtain a MUL-tree and, conversely, a MUL-tree can in certain circumstances be "folded" to obtain a phylogenetic network that exhibits . In this paper, we study properties of the operations and in more detail. In particular, we introduce the class of stable networks, phylogenetic networks for which is isomorphic to , characterise such networks, and show that they are related to the well-known class of tree-sibling networks.We also explore how the concept of displaying a tree in a network can be related to displaying the tree in the MUL-tree . To do this, we develop a phylogenetic analogue of graph fibrations. This allows us to view as the analogue of the universal cover of a digraph, and to establish a close connection between displaying trees in and reconcilingphylogenetic trees with networks
Electron--Electron Scattering in Quantum Wires and it's Possible Suppression due to Spin Effects
A microscopic picture of electron-electron pair scattering in single mode
quantum wires is introduced which includes electron spin. A new source of
`excess' noise for hot carriers is presented. We show that zero magnetic field
`spin' splitting in quantum wires can lead to a dramatic `spin'-subband
dependence of electron--electron scattering, including the possibility of
strong suppression. As a consequence extremely long electron coherence lengths
and new spin-related phenomena are predicted. Since electron bands in III-V
semiconductor quantum wires are in general spin-split in zero applied magnetic

End-of-life priorities of older adults with terminal illness and caregivers: A qualitative consultation
Abstract Background As older adults approach the end‐of‐life (EOL), many are faced with complex decisions including whether to use medical advances to prolong life. Limited information exists on the priorities of older adults at the EOL. Objective This study aimed to explore patient and family experiences and identify factors deemed important to quality EOL care. Method A descriptive qualitative study involving three focus group discussions (n = 18) and six in‐depth interviews with older adults suffering from either a terminal condition and/or caregivers were conducted in NSW, Australia. Data were analysed thematically. Results Seven major themes were identified as follows: quality as a priority, sense of control, life on hold, need for health system support, being at home, talking about death and competent and caring health professionals. An underpinning priority throughout the seven themes was knowing and adhering to patient's wishes. Conclusion Our study highlights that to better adhere to EOL patient's wishes a reorganization of care needs is required. The readiness of the health system to cater for this expectation is questionable as real choices may not be available in acute hospital settings. With an ageing population, a reorganization of care which influences the way we manage terminal patients is required
Comparison of Bond Character in Hydrocarbons and Fullerenes
We present a comparison of the bond polarizabilities for carbon-carbon bonds
in hydrocarbons and fullerenes, using two different models for the fullerene
Raman spectrum and the results of Raman measurements on ethane and ethylene. We
find that the polarizabilities for single bonds in fullerenes and hydrocarbons
compare well, while the double bonds in fullerenes have greater polarizability

Approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structures and semistability for Higgs bundles. II: Higgs sheaves and admissible structures
We study the basic properties of Higgs sheaves over compact K\"ahler
manifolds and we establish some results concerning the notion of semistability;
in particular, we show that any extension of semistable Higgs sheaves with
equal slopes is semistable. Then, we use the flattening theorem to construct a
regularization of any torsion-free Higgs sheaf and we show that it is in fact a
Higgs bundle. Using this, we prove that any Hermitian metric on a
regularization of a torsion-free Higgs sheaf induces an admissible structure on
the Higgs sheaf. Finally, using admissible structures we proved some properties
of semistable Higgs sheaves.Comment: 18 pages; some typos correcte
Electronic, vibrational, and thermodynamic properties of ZnS (zincblende and rocksalt structure)
We have measured the specific heat of zincblende ZnS for several isotopic
compositions and over a broad temperature range (3 to 1100 K). We have compared
these results with calculations based on ab initio electronic band structures,
performed using both LDA and GGA exchange- correlation functionals. We have
compared the lattice dynamics obtained in this manner with experimental data
and have calculated the one-phonon and two-phonon densities of states. We have
also calculated mode Grueneisen parameters at a number of high symmetry points
of the Brillouin zone. The electronic part of our calculations has been used to
investigate the effect of the 3d core electrons of zinc on the spin-orbit
splitting of the top valence bands. The effect of these core electrons on the
band structure of the rock salt modification of ZnS is also discussed.Comment: 33pages, 16 Figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
