Fast Computation of the Fitness Function for Protein Folding Prediction in a 2D Hydrophobic-Hydrophilic Model
Protein Folding Prediction (PFP) is essentially an energy minimization problem formalised by the definition of a fitness function. Several PFP models have been proposed including the Hydrophobic-Hydrophilic (HP) model, which is widely used as a test-bed for evaluating new algorithms. The calculation of the fitness is the major computational task in determining the native conformation of a protein in the HP model and this paper presents a new efficient search algorithm (ESA) for deriving the fitness value requiring only O(n) complexity in contrast to the full search approach, which takes O(n2). The improved efficiency of ESA is achieved by exploiting some intrinsic properties of the HP model, with a resulting reduction of more than 50% in the overall time complexity when compared with the previously reported Caching Approach, with the added benefit that the additional space complexity is linear instead of quadratic
Pyle metaphyseal dysplasia in an African child: Case report and review of the literature
Pyle disease (OMIM 265900), also known as metaphyseal dysplasia, is a rare autosomal recessive disorder with no known gene mutation. We
report a case of Pyle disease in a 7-year-old African boy of mixed ancestry who presented with finger and wrist fractures following minor
trauma. The radiological findings revealed abnormally broad metaphyses of the tubular bones, known as Erlenmeyer-flask bone deformity,
and mild cranial sclerosis, both hallmarks of the condition. We report the first case in a patient with African ancestry, which could help in
the gene discovery of this rare autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia with unknown mutations.DHE
Incident HIV during pregnancy and early postpartum period: a population-based cohort study in a rural area in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
BACKGROUND: The evidence on the effect of pregnancy on acquiring HIV is conflicting, with studies reporting both higher and lower HIV acquisition risk during pregnancy when prolonged antiretroviral therapy was accessible. The aim of this study was to assess the pregnancy effect on HIV acquisition where antiretroviral therapy was widely available in a high HIV prevalence setting. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study nested within a population-based surveillance to determine HIV incidence in HIV-uninfected women from 15 to 49 years from 2010 through 2015 in rural KwaZulu-Natal. HIV incidence per 100 person-years according to pregnancy status (not pregnant, pregnant, to eight weeks postpartum) were measured in 5260 HIV-uninfected women. Hazard ratios (HR) were estimated by Cox proportional hazards regression with pregnancy included as a time varying variable. RESULTS: Overall, pregnancy HIV incidence was 4.5 per 100 person-years (95% CI 3.4-5.8), higher than non-pregnancy (4.0; 95% CI 3.7-4.3) and postpartum incidences (4.2 per 100 person-years; 95% CI 2.3-7.6). However, adjusting for age, and demographic factors, pregnant women had a lower risk of acquiring HIV (HR 0.4; 95% CI 0.2-0.9, P = 0.032) than non-pregnant women; there were no differences between postpartum and non-pregnant women (HR 1.2; 95% CI 0.4-3.2; P = 0.744). In models adjusting for the interaction of age and gravidity, pregnant women under 25 years with two or more pregnancies had a 2.3 times greater risk of acquiring HIV than their older counterparts (95% CI 1.3-4.3; P = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: Pregnancy had a protective effect on HIV acquisition. Elevated HIV incidence in younger women appeared to be driven by those with higher gravidity. The sexual and biological factors in younger women should be explored further in order to design appropriate HIV prevention interventions
Dental needs of intellectually disabled children attending six special educational facilities in Cape Town
OBJECTIVE. To assess the dental needs of a group of children with intellectual disability (ID) attending six special educational facilities in
Cape Town, South Africa.
METHODS. This was a cross-sectional study based on a convenience sampling method. One hundred and fifty-seven children with ID
attending six special educational facilities in Cape Town were included in the survey. Five schools were exclusively funded by the State
and one school received additional private financial support. The oral examinations complied with guidelines drafted by Special Olympics
Special Smiles programme and the Centers for Disease Control, USA.
RESULTS. The most common dental disorders requiring management were gingival disease (69%) and untreated dental caries (68%). Almost 50%
of the children had missing teeth. Twenty-nine percent needed orthodontic correction of malocclusion and 7% had structural abnormalities
of their teeth that required either aesthetic or functional intervention. Fillings were evident in only 8% of the children. Females required more
dental treatment than males. The dental needs of children with ID increased with age. There were no significant differences in the dental needs
of children attending State-funded schools and those attending the single school that received additional financial assistance.
CONCLUSION. The frequency of unmet dental needs of children with ID attending special educational facilities in Cape Town was high and
the dental care available to them was minimal. The study highlights the need for improved dental services to ensure that optimal oral health
is accessible to children with ID attending special educational facilities in Cape Town.DHE
How Sales Taxes Affect Customer and Firm Behavior: The Role of Search on the Internet
When a multichannel retailer opens its first retail store in a state, the firm is obligated to collect sales taxes on all Internet and catalog orders shipped to that state. This article assesses how opening a store affects Internet and catalog demand. The authors analyze purchase behavior among customers who live far from the retail store but must now pay sales taxes on catalog and Internet purchases. A comparable group of customers in a neighboring state serves as a control. The results show that Internet sales decrease significantly, but catalog sales are unaffected. Further investigation indicates that the difference in these outcomes is partly attributable to the ease with which customers can search for lower prices at competing retailers. The authors extend the analysis to a panel of multichannel firms and show that retailers that earn a large proportion of their revenue from direct channels avoid opening a first store in high-tax states. They conclude that current U.S. sales taxes laws have significant effects on both customer and firm behavior
Au/TiO2(110) interfacial reconstruction stability from ab initio
We determine the stability and properties of interfaces of low-index Au
surfaces adhered to TiO2(110), using density functional theory energy density
calculations. We consider Au(100) and Au(111) epitaxies on rutile TiO2(110)
surface, as observed in experiments. For each epitaxy, we consider several
different interfaces: Au(111)//TiO2(110) and Au(100)//TiO2(110), with and
without bridging oxygen, Au(111) on 1x2 added-row TiO2(110) reconstruction, and
Au(111) on a proposed 1x2 TiO reconstruction. The density functional theory
energy density method computes the energy changes on each of the atoms while
forming the interface, and evaluates the work of adhesion to determine the
equilibrium interfacial structure.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figure
Competition between Magnetic and Structural Transition in CrN
CrN is observed to undergo a paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition
accompanied by a shear distortion from cubic NaCl-type to orthorhombic
structure. Our first-principle plane wave and ultrasoft pseudopotential
calculations confirm that the distorted antiferromagnetic phase with spin
configuration arranged in double ferromagnetic sheets along [110] is the most
stable. Antiferromagnetic ordering leads to a large depletion of states around
Fermi level, but it does not open a gap. Simultaneous occurence of structural
distortion and antiferromagnetic order is analyzed.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
