Decay Process for Three - Species Reaction - Diffusion System
We propose the deterministic rate equation of three-species in the reaction -
diffusion system. For this case, our purpose is to carry out the decay process
in our three-species reaction-diffusion model of the form . The
particle density and the global reaction rate are also shown analytically and
numerically on a two-dimensional square lattice with the periodic boundary
conditions. Especially, the crossover of the global reaction rate is discussed

Energy and Charged Particle Flow in 10.8 A GeV/c Au+Au Collisions
Experimental results and a detailed analysis are presented of the transverse
energy and charged particle azimuthal distributions measured by the E877
collaboration for different centralities of Au+Au collisions at a beam momentum
of 10.8 A GeV/c. The anisotropy of these distributions is studied with respect
to the reaction plane reconstructed on an event-by-event basis using the
transverse energy distribution measured by calorimeters. Results are corrected
for the reaction plane resolution. For semicentral events we observe directed
flow signals of up to ten percent. We observe a stronger anisotropy for slow
charged particles. For both the charged particle and transverse energy
distributions we observe a small but non zero elliptic anisotropy with the
major axis pointing into the reaction plane. Combining the information on
transverse energy and charged particle flow we obtain information on the flow
of nucleons and pions. The data are compared to event generators and the need

A pool of representative users for accessibility research:seeing through the eyes of the users
A critical element of accessibility research is the exploration and evaluation of ideas with representative users. However, it is often difficult to recruit such a range of users, particularly in a timely manner, nor is it easy for new researchers to understand how to recruit relevant populations or feel confident in communicating with older or “vulnerable” users. We report on the establishment of a large user pool created to facilitate accessibility research through recruiting sizeable numbers of older adults potentially interested in taking part in research studies about technology. We suggest points to guide new researchers and invite other experts to build on these. We also sketch some of the lessons learned from creating and maintaining this pool of individuals, including thoughts on issues for others wishing to set up similar pools
Liesegang patterns: Effect of dissociation of the invading electrolyte
The effect of dissociation of the invading electrolyte on the formation of
Liesegang bands is investigated. We find, using organic compounds with known
dissociation constants, that the spacing coefficient, 1+p, that characterizes
the position of the n-th band as x_n ~ (1+p)^n, decreases with increasing
dissociation constant, K_d. Theoretical arguments are developed to explain
these experimental findings and to calculate explicitly the K_d dependence of

Formation of Liesegang patterns: A spinodal decomposition scenario
Spinodal decomposition in the presence of a moving particle source is
proposed as a mechanism for the formation of Liesegang bands. This mechanism
yields a sequence of band positions x_n that obeys the spacing law
x_n~Q(1+p)^n. The dependence of the parameters p and Q on the initial
concentration of the reagents is determined and we find that the functional

Pearling and Pinching: Propagation of Rayleigh Instabilities
A new category of front propagation problems is proposed in which a spreading
instability evolves through a singular configuration before saturating. We
examine the nature of this front for the viscous Rayleigh instability of a
column of one fluid immersed in another, using the marginal stability criterion
to estimate the front velocity, front width, and the selected wavelength in
terms of the surface tension and viscosity contrast. Experiments are suggested
on systems that may display this phenomenon, including droplets elongated in
extensional flows, capillary bridges, liquid crystal tethers, and viscoelastic
fluids. The related problem of propagation in Rayleigh-like systems that do not

The CF-Sputum Induction Trial (CF-SpIT) to assess lower airway bacterial sampling in young children with cystic fibrosis: a prospective internally controlled interventional trial
Background Pathogen surveillance is challenging but crucial in children with cystic fibrosis—who are often nonproductive of sputum even if actively coughing—because infection and lung disease begin early in life. The role of sputum induction as a diagnostic tool for infection has not previously been systematically addressed in young children with cystic fibrosis. We aimed to assess the pathogen yield from sputum induction compared with that from cough swab and single-lobe, two-lobe, and six-lobe bronchoalveolar lavage. Methods This prospective internally controlled interventional trial was done at the Children’s Hospital for Wales (Cardiff, UK) in children with cystic fibrosis aged between 6 months and 18 years. Samples from cough swab, sputum induction, and single-lobe, two-lobe, and six-lobe bronchoalveolar lavage were matched for within-patient comparisons. Primary outcomes were comparative pathogen yield between sputum induction and cough swab for stage 1, and between sputum induction, and single-lobe, two-lobe, and six-lobe bronchoalveolar lavage for stage 2. Data were analysed as per protocol. This study is registered with the UK Clinical Research Network (14615) and with the International Standard Randomised Controlled Trial Network Registry (12473810). Findings Between Jan 23, 2012, and July 4, 2017, 124 patients were prospectively recruited to the trial and had 200 sputum induction procedures for stage 1. 167 (84%) procedures were successful and the procedure was well tolerated. Of the 167 paired samples, 63 (38%) sputum-induction samples were pathogen positive compared with 24 (14%) cough swabs (p<0·0001; odds ratio [OR] 7·5; 95% CI 3·19–17·98). More pathogens were isolated from sputum induction than cough swab (79 [92%] of 86 vs 27 [31%] of 86; p<0·0001). For stage 2, 35 patients had a total of 41 paired sputum-induction and bronchoalveolar lavage procedures. Of the 41 paired samples, 28 (68%) were positive for at least one of the concurrent samples. 39 pathogens were isolated. Sputum induction identified 27 (69%) of the 39 pathogens, compared with 22 (56%; p=0·092; OR 3·3, 95% CI 0·91–12·11) on single-lobe, 28 (72%; p=1·0; OR 1·1, 95% CI 0·41–3·15) on two-lobe, and 33 (85%; p=0·21; OR 2·2, 95% CI 0·76–6·33) on six-lobe bronchoalveolar lavage. Interpretation Sputum induction is superior to cough swab for pathogen detection, is effective at sampling the lower airway, and is a credible surrogate for bronchoalveolar lavage in symptomatic children. A substantial number of bronchoscopies could be avoided if sputum induction is done first and pathogens are appropriately treated. Both sputum induction and six-lobe bronchoalveolar lavage provide independent, sizeable gains in pathogen detection compared with the current gold-standard two-lobe bronchoalveolar lavage. We propose that sputum induction and six-lobe bronchoalveolar lavage combined are used as standard of care for comprehensive lower airway pathogen detection in children with cystic fibrosis
Band Formation during Gaseous Diffusion in Aerogels
We study experimentally how gaseous HCl and NH_3 diffuse from opposite sides
of and react in silica aerogel rods with porosity of 92 % and average pore size
of about 50 nm. The reaction leads to solid NH_4Cl, which is deposited in thin
sheet-like structures. We present a numerical study of the phenomenon. Due to
the difference in boundary conditions between this system and those usually
studied, we find the sheet-like structures in the aerogel to differ
significantly from older studies. The influence of random nucleation centers

Localization-delocalization transition of a reaction-diffusion front near a semipermeable wall
The A+B --> C reaction-diffusion process is studied in a system where the
reagents are separated by a semipermeable wall. We use reaction-diffusion
equations to describe the process and to derive a scaling description for the
long-time behavior of the reaction front. Furthermore, we show that a critical
localization-delocalization transition takes place as a control parameter which
depends on the initial densities and on the diffusion constants is varied. The
transition is between a reaction front of finite width that is localized at the
wall and a front which is detached and moves away from the wall. At the
critical point, the reaction front remains at the wall but its width diverges
