Are language production problems apparent in adults who no longer meet diagnostic criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder?

In this study, we examined sentence production in a sample of adults (N = 21) who had had attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as children, but as adults no longer met DSM-IV diagnostic criteria (APA, 2000). This “remitted” group was assessed on a sentence production task. On each trial, participants saw two objects and a verb. Their task was to construct a sentence using the objects as arguments of the verb. Results showed more ungrammatical and disfluent utterances with one particular type of verb (i.e., participle). In a second set of analyses, we compared the remitted group to both control participants and a “persistent” group, who had ADHD as children and as adults. Results showed that remitters were more likely to produce ungrammatical utterances and to make repair disfluencies compared to controls, and they patterned more similarly to ADHD participants. Conclusions focus on language output in remitted ADHD, and the role of executive functions in language production

Grape training and pruning in Iowa

The Concord grape and grapes of this type and hardiness, which are the grapes most widely grown in Iowa, require yearly pruning if the grower wishes to obtain heavy annual yields of large-sized high-quality fruit. The illustration on the cover of this bulletin indicates the development and distribution of the fruit which may be expected on correctly pruned vines. Far too many home vineyards are left unpruned or are incorrectly pruned with the result that they are unproductive and unsightly. There are many systems used in training the American grape, but the system which seems to be best adapted to Iowa conditions is the single-stem four-cane Kniffin system. The spur method of pruning, which has been employed to a considerable extent with the European grape, is still followed in many sections of Iowa. Unfortunately, this method is unsatisfactory with the Concord grape and, except with grapes trained on arbors, should not be used. The grapevines pruned by the long cane method and trained to the Kniffin system in certain Iowa tests have repeatedly out-produced those pruned by the spur method. The Concord produces the heaviest yield of fruit from approximately the fifth to ninth bud and the lowest yield from the first four buds on the cane. Therefore, it can be seen that with the spur method of pruning, when only the first two buds are left on each cane, the heaviest producing buds are removed. The characteristic bearing habit of the American grape explains why long cane pruning is more productive than the spur cane system

Evaluating an online global community of practice: Student nurse experiences of a cross-cultural blogging activity

Purpose: Internationalization at Home, a concept developed in the Netherlands, enables students to have a global experience and engage with international students without leaving home (Teekens, 2015). The use of technology such as social media can provide a viable mechanism by which this can be achieved (Beleen & Jones, 2015; Chan & Nyback, 2015). Social media provides students with an opportunity to share ideas, develop digital communication skills and enrich their learning experience (Roland, Johnson & Swain, 2011; Schmitt, Sims-Giddens & Booth, 2012). The purpose of this project was to create an online community of practice using a blog to stimulate discussion between Canadian and Australian nursing students, focusing on culture and family. Methods: Australian and Canadian nursing students participated in an international, cross-cultural blog activity that provided an opportunity to engage with each other through a shared blog experience. This learning and teaching activity was imbedded within a Bachelor of Nursing subject at each University. This activity was expected to expand their knowledge through interaction with students from another country, learn about other cultures and share ideas. Questions were posted by faculty to stimulate student discussion related to culture and family. The students posted their response to the questions and replied to each other s postings. Students who took part in the international blog were invited to evaluate the activity. The evaluation was in the form of an anonymous online questionnaire located within the respective schools eLearning platforms. Results: Preliminary results indicate that students found this to be a worthwhile learning activity. They were interested in exploring each others personal and professional experience of culture and family through discussion with students from another country. Students reported that the blog was a useful medium for an international learning experience, which they also enjoyed. Conclusion: Participating in the evaluation provided students with an opportunity to interact with nursing students from another country in a guided learning experience. Students then reflected on their blog experience and assisted instructors to identify the strengths and limitations of the learning activity, illuminate areas for improvement and determine if it would be worthwhile repeating in future. Communication through social media is fast becoming more relevant to nursing practice and the use of social media in nursing education will prepare students to effectively utilize social media and function in a global community of practice

A new radiodont (stem Euarthropoda) frontal appendage with a mosaic of characters from the Cambrian (Series 2 Stage 3) Chengjiang biota

The classification of Radiodonta is primarily based on the morphology of their frontal appendages, a main feeding structure of this iconic group of mostly Cambrian stem‐group euarthropods. However, recent progress in the description and revision of radiodont taxa, particularly drawing on their frontal appendages, has exposed morphological variation that challenges reliable identification of higher‐level groupings. Here we describe a new taxon of Radiodonta, Laminacaris chimera gen. et sp. nov., from the Cambrian Series 2, Stage 3, Chengjiang biota of China, based on its unique frontal appendage morphology. Laminacaris is distinctive for its combination of characters shared by hurdiids and other early Cambrian radiodont families. Elongated, possibly unpaired endites on two proximal podomeres that bear small distally‐directed auxiliary spines oriented perpendicular to the long axis of the endite, are comparable with the elongated endites and their auxiliary spines of all known Cambrian members of Hurdiidae. In contrast, endites on more distal podomeres are similar to some species of Anomalocaris, and the dorsal spines at the distal end resemble those of Amplectobelua. The mosaic characters in the frontal appendage of Laminacaris chimera may capture morphology close to the divergence between the major radiodont groups
