Quantum Transport with Spin Dephasing: A Nonequilibrium Green's Function Approach
A quantum transport model incorporating spin scattering processes is
presented using the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism within
the self-consistent Born approximation. This model offers a unified approach by
capturing the spin-flip scattering and the quantum effects simultaneously. A
numerical implementation of the model is illustrated for magnetic tunnel
junction devices with embedded magnetic impurity layers. The results are
compared with experimental data, revealing the underlying physics of the
coherent and incoherent transport regimes. It is shown that small variations in
magnetic impurity spin-states/concentrations could cause large deviations in

Exchange bias and interface electronic structure in Ni/Co3O4(011)
A detailed study of the exchange bias effect and the interfacial electronic
structure in Ni/Co3O4(011) is reported. Large exchange anisotropies are
observed at low temperatures, and the exchange bias effect persists to
temperatures well above the Neel temperature of bulk Co3O4, of about 40 K: to
~80 K for Ni films deposited on well ordered oxide surfaces, and ~150 K for Ni
films deposited on rougher Co3O4 surfaces. Photoelectron spectroscopy
measurements as a function of Ni thickness show that Co reduction and Ni
oxidation occur over an extended interfacial region. We conclude that the
exchange bias observed in Ni/Co3O4, and in similar ferromagnetic metallic/Co3O4
systems, is not intrinsic to Co3O4 but rather due to the formation of CoO at

Nest use is influenced by the positions of nests and drinkers in aviaries
The influence of the nest location and the placement of nipple drinkers on nest use by laying hens in a commercial aviary was assessed. Twenty pens in a laying hen house were equipped with the same commercial aviary system, but the pens differed in the nest location and the placement of nipple drinkers. Nests were placed along the walls in 10 pens, and nipple drinkers were installed in front of the nests in 5 of these pens. The other 10 pens were equipped with nests placed on a tier within the aviary (integrated nests). Nipple drinkers were installed in front of the nests in 5 of these pens. A total of 225 Lohmann Selected Leghorns were housed per pen. The hens were offered 4 nests per pen: 2 facing the service corridor of the laying hen house and 2 facing the outdoor area. The numbers of nest eggs and mislaid eggs were counted daily per pen. At 25, 36, and 43 wk of age, the nest platforms were videotaped and the behavior of laying hens in front of the nests was analyzed. The nest location affected the stationary and locomotive behaviors in front of the nests. Hens in front of the integrated nests and the nests with drinkers displayed more stationary behaviors than hens in front of wall-placed nests or nests without drinkers. No difference in the number of nest eggs could be detected, but the integration of the nests inside the aviary led to a more even distribution of hens while nest searching. In the pens with wall-placed nests, significantly more hens laid eggs in the nests at the wall near the service corridor than at the wall near the outdoor area. Due to this imbalance, crowding in front of the preferred nests occurred and pushing and agonistic interactions on the nest platforms were significantly more frequent. Placement of nipple drinkers in front of nests had no effect on the number of eggs laid in those nest
Small quantum networks operating as quantum thermodynamic machines
We show that a 3-qubit system as studied for quantum information purposes can
alternatively be used as a thermodynamic machine when driven in finite time and
interfaced between two split baths. The spins are arranged in a chain where the
working spin in the middle exercises Carnot cycles the area of which defines
the exchanged work. The cycle orientation (sign of the exchanged work) flips as

Hereditary hydrocephalus internus in a laboratory strain of golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus)
Golden hamsters of one common laboratory strain had a high incidence of hydrocephalus internus. When a severity score of hydrocephalus was used, a major autosomal recessive locus could be identified. However, when a binary score (hydrocephalus, no hydrocephalus) was used, no such major locus could be detected and results of test matings were not consistent with Mendelian inheritance. Golden hamsters with severe forms of hydrocephalus had a dorsally compressed and ventrally intact hippocampus. Implications for the behavior and well-being of affected hamsters are unknown but researchers using this strain should be aware of the likely presence of hydrocephalu
Photoelectron diffraction investigation of the structure of the clean TiO2(110)(1×1) surface
The surface relaxations of the rutile TiO2(110)(1×1) clean surface have been determined by O 1 s and Ti 2p3∕2 scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction. The results are in excellent agreement with recent low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and medium energy ion scattering (MEIS) results, but in conflict with the results of some earlier investigations including one by surface x-ray diffraction. In particular, the bridging O atoms at the surface are found to relax outward, rather than inward, relative to the underlying bulk. Combined with the recent LEED and MEIS results, a consistent picture of the structure of this surface is provided. While the results of the most recent theoretical total-energy calculations are qualitatively consistent with this experimental consensus, significant quantitative differences remain
Cultural longevity: Morin on cultural lineages
Morin has written a rich and valuable book. Its main aim is to isolate the factors involved in maintaining behavioural lineages over time, and to understand how these factors might interact. In doing so, it takes issue with the abstract and idealised models and arguments of dual-inheritance theorists, which are alleged in this account to rely on an overly simplistic notion of imitative learning. Morin’s book is full of ethnographic, anthropological, and psychological research, and there is much to commend in it. However, Morin’s arguments against the dual-inheritance theorists are less convincing when put under scrutiny, and his positive picture which includes appeals to ostensive communication, intrinsic appeal and cultural attraction has some difficulties. I argue that when we contrast dual-inheritance theorists and Morin, we find that there may be fewer differences and greater commonalities than Morin’s book might suggest.This is the author accepted manuscript. Epitaxial and layer-by-layer growth of EuO thin films on yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia (001) using MBE distillation
We have succeeded in growing epitaxial and highly stoichiometric films of EuO
on yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia (YSZ) (001). The use of the Eu-distillation
process during the molecular beam epitaxy assisted growth enables the
consistent achievement of stoichiometry. We have also succeeded in growing the
films in a layer-by-layer fashion by fine tuning the Eu vs. oxygen deposition
rates. The initial stages of growth involve the limited supply of oxygen from
the YSZ substrate, but the EuO stoichiometry can still be well maintained. The
films grown were sufficiently smooth so that the capping with a thin layer of
aluminum was leak tight and enabled ex situ experiments free from trivalent Eu
species. The findings were used to obtain recipes for better epitaxial growth
of EuO on MgO (001).Comment: 10 pages, 15 figure
Glottal opening and closing events investigated by electroglottography and super-high-speed video recordings
International audiencePrevious research has suggested that the peaks in the first derivative (dEGG) of the electroglottographic (EGG) signal are good approximate indicators of the events of glottal opening and closing. These findings were based on high-speed video (HSV) recordings with frame rates 10 times lower than the sampling frequencies of the corresponding EGG data. The present study attempts to corroborate these previous findings, utilizing super-HSV recordings. The HSV and EGG recordings (sampled at 27 and 44 kHz, respectively) of an excised canine larynx phonation were synchronized by an external TTL signal to within 0.037 ms. Data were analyzed by means of glottovibrograms, digital kymograms, the glottal area waveform and the vocal fold contact length (VFCL), a new parameter representing the time-varying degree of 'zippering' closure along the anterior-posterior (A-P) glottal axis. The temporal offsets between glottal events (depicted in the HSV recordings) and dEGG peaks in the opening and closing phase of glottal vibration ranged from 0.02 to 0.61 ms, amounting to 0.24-10.88% of the respective glottal cycle durations. All dEGG double peaks coincided with vibratory A-P phase differences. In two out of the three analyzed video sequences, peaks in the first derivative of the VFCL coincided with dEGG peaks, again co-occurring with A-P phase differences. The findings suggest that dEGG peaks do not always coincide with the events of glottal closure and initial opening. Vocal fold contacting and de-contacting do not occur at infinitesimally small instants of time, but extend over a certain interval, particularly under the influence of A-P phase differences
Epitaxy, stoichiometry, and magnetic properties of Gd-doped EuO films on YSZ (001)
We have succeeded in preparing high-quality Gd-doped single-crystalline EuO
films. Using Eu-distillation-assisted molecular beam epitaxy and a systematic
variation in the Gd and oxygen deposition rates, we have been able to observe
sustained layer-by-layer epitaxial growth on yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia
(001). The presence of Gd helps to stabilize the layer-by-layer growth mode. We
used soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Eu and Gd M4,5 edges to confirm
the absence of Eu3+ contaminants and to determine the actual Gd concentration.
The distillation process ensures the absence of oxygen vacancies in the films.
From magnetization measurements we found the Curie temperature to increase
smoothly as a function of doping from 70 K up to a maximum of 125 K. A
threshold behavior was not observed for concentrations as low as 0.2%.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
