Cold Induction of EARLI1, a Putative Arabidopsis Lipid Transfer Protein, Is Light and Calcium Dependent
As sessile organisms, plants must adapt to their environment. One approach toward understanding this adaptation is to investigate environmental regulation of gene expression. Our focus is on the environmental regulation of EARLI1, which is activated by cold and long-day photoperiods. Cold activation of EARLI1 in short-day photoperiods is slow, requiring several hours at 4ºC to detect an increase in mRNA abundance. EARLI1 is not efficiently cold-activated in etiolated seedlings, suggesting that photomorphogenesis is necessary for its cold activation. Cold activation of EARLI1 is inhibited in the presence of the calcium channel blocker lanthanum chloride or the calcium chelator EGTA. Addition of the calcium ionophore Bay K8644 results in cold-independent activation of EARLI1. These data suggest that EARLI1 is not an immediate target of the cold response, and that calcium flux affects its expression. EARLI1 is a putative secreted protein and has motifs found in lipid transfer proteins. Over-expression of EARLI1 in transgenic plants results in reduced electrolyte leakage during freezing damage, suggesting that EARLI1 may affect membrane or cell wall stability in response to low temperature stress

Cosmological Systematics Beyond Nuisance Parameters : Form Filling Functions
In the absence of any compelling physical model, cosmological systematics are
often misrepresented as statistical effects and the approach of marginalising
over extra nuisance systematic parameters is used to gauge the effect of the
systematic. In this article we argue that such an approach is risky at best
since the key choice of function can have a large effect on the resultant
cosmological errors. As an alternative we present a functional form filling
technique in which an unknown, residual, systematic is treated as such. Since
the underlying function is unknown we evaluate the effect of every functional
form allowed by the information available (either a hard boundary or some
data). Using a simple toy model we introduce the formalism of functional form
filling. We show that parameter errors can be dramatically affected by the
choice of function in the case of marginalising over a systematic, but that in
contrast the functional form filling approach is independent of the choice of
basis set. We then apply the technique to cosmic shear shape measurement
systematics and show that a shear calibration bias of |m(z)|< 0.001(1+z)^0.7 is
required for a future all-sky photometric survey to yield unbiased cosmological
parameter constraints to percent accuracy. A module associated with the work in

High risk of in-breast tumor recurrence after BRCA1/2-associated breast cancer.

Women with invasive breast cancer and a pathogenic mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 were included in the study (n = 162). Patients treated with BCT (n = 45) were compared with patients treated with M (n = 118). Endpoints were local recurrence as first recurrence (LR), overall survival (OS), breast cancer death, and distant recurrence. Cumulative incidence was calculated in the presence of competing risks. For calculation of hazard ratios and for multivariable analysis, cause-specific Cox proportional hazards regression was used. Compared to M, BCT was associated with an increased risk of LR in univariable analysis (HR 4.0; 95 % CI 1.6-9.8) and in multivariable analysis adjusting for tumor stage, age, and use of adjuvant chemotherapy (HR 2.9; CI 1.1-7.8). Following M, all local recurrences were seen in the first 5 years after breast cancer diagnosis. Following BCT, the rate of LR continued to be high also after the first 5 years. The cumulative incidence of LR in the BCT group was 15, 25, and 32 % after 5, 10, and 15 years, respectively. There were no significant differences between BCT and M for OS, breast cancer death, or distant recurrence. BRCA1/2 mutation carriers treated with BCT have a high risk of LR, many of which are new primary breast cancers. First Measurement of Gamma(D*+) and Precision Measurement of m_D*+ - m_D0
We present the first measurement of the D*+ width using 9/fb of e+ e- data
collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the CLEO II.V detector. Our method
uses advanced tracking techniques and a reconstruction method that takes
advantage of the small vertical size of the CESR beam spot to measure the
energy release distribution from the D*+ -> D0 pi+ decay. We find Gamma(D*+) =
96 +- 4 (Statistical) +- 22 (Systematic) keV. We also measure the energy
release in the decay and compute Delta m = m(D*+) - m(D0) = 145.412 +- 0.002

A formal framework to prove the correctness of model driven engineering composition operators
International audienceCurrent trends in system engineering combine modeling, composition and verification technologies in order to harness their ever growing complexity. Each composition operator dedicated to a different modeling concern should be proven to be property preserving at assembly time. These proofs are usually burdensome with repetitive aspects. Our work targets the factorisation of these aspects relying on primitive generic composition operators used to express more sophisticated language specific ones. These operators are defined for languages expressed with OMG MOF metamodeling technologies. The proof are done with the Coq proof assistant relying on the Coq4MDE framework defined previously. These basic operators, Union and Substitution, are illustrated using the MOF Package Merge as composition operator and the preservation of model conformance as verified property
