Applying consumer responsibility principle in evaluating environmental load of carbon emissions
There is a need for a proper indicator in order to assess the environmental impact of international
trade, therefore using the carbon footprint as an indicator can be relevant and useful. The aim of this
study is to show from a methodological perspective how the carbon footprint, combined with input-
output models can be used for analysing the impacts of international trade on the sustainable use
of national resources in a country. The use of the input-output approach has the essential advantage
of being able to track the transformation of goods through the economy. The study examines the environmental
impact of consumption related to international trade, using the consumer responsibility
principle. In this study the use of the carbon footprint and input-output methodology is shown on the
example of the Hungarian consumption and the impact of international trade. Moving from a production-
based approach in climate policy to a consumption-perspective principle and allocation,
would also help to increase the efficiency of emission reduction targets and the evaluation of the
ecological impacts of international trade
One More Awareness Gap? The Behaviour–Impact Gap Problem
Preceding research has made hardly any attempt to measure the ecological impacts of pro-environmental behaviour in an objective way. Those impacts were rather supposed or calculated. The research described herein scrutinized the ecological impact reductions achieved through pro-environmental behaviour and raised the question how much of a reduction in carbon footprint can be achieved through voluntary action without actually affecting the socio-economic determinants of life. A survey was carried out in order to measure the difference between the ecological footprint of “green” and “brown” consumers. No significant difference was found between the ecological footprints of the two groups—suggesting that individual pro-environmental attitudes and behaviour do not always reduce the environmental impacts of consumption. This finding resulted in the formulation of a new proposition called the BIG (behaviour–impact gap) problem, which is an interesting addition to research in the field of environmental awareness gaps
Detection of the Sgr A* activity at 3.8 and 4.8 microns with NACO
L'-band (lambda=3.8 microns) and M'-band (lambda=4.8 microns) observations of
the Galactic Center region, performed in 2003 at VLT (ESO) with the adaptive
optics imager NACO, have lead to the detection of an infrared counterpart of
the radio source Sgr A* at both wavelengths. The measured fluxes confirm that
the Sgr A* infrared spectrum is dominated by the synchrotron emission of
nonthermal electrons. The infrared counterpart exhibits no significant short
term variability but demonstrates flux variations on daily and yearly scales.
The observed emission arises away from the position of the dynamical center of
the S2 orbit and would then not originate from the closest regions of the black

Chemical data assimilation estimates of continental U.S. ozone and nitrogen budgets during the Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment-North America
Global ozone analyses, based on assimilation of stratospheric profile and ozone column measurements, and NOy predictions from the Real-time Air Quality Modeling System (RAQMS) are used to estimate the ozone and NOy budget over the continental United States during the July-August 2004 Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment-North America (INTEX-A). Comparison with aircraft, satellite, surface, and ozonesonde measurements collected during INTEX-A show that RAQMS captures the main features of the global and continental U.S. distribution of tropospheric ozone, carbon monoxide, and NOy with reasonable fidelity. Assimilation of stratospheric profile and column ozone measurements is shown to have a positive impact on the RAQMS upper tropospheric/lower stratosphere ozone analyses, particularly during the period when SAGE III limb scattering measurements were available. Eulerian ozone and NOy budgets during INTEX-A show that the majority of the continental U.S. export occurs in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere poleward of the tropopause break, a consequence of convergence of tropospheric and stratospheric air in this region. Continental U.S. photochemically produced ozone was found to be a minor component of the total ozone export, which was dominated by stratospheric ozone during INTEX-A. The unusually low photochemical ozone export is attributed to anomalously cold surface temperatures during the latter half of the INTEX-A mission, which resulted in net ozone loss during the first 2 weeks of August. Eulerian NOy budgets are shown to be very consistent with previously published estimates. The NOy export efficiency was estimated to be 24%, with NOx + PAN accounting for 54% of the total NOy export during INTEX-A. Copyright 2007 by the American Geophysical Union
Constraining the orbit of the possible companion to Beta Pictoris: New deep imaging observations
We recently reported on the detection of a possible planetary-mass companion
to Beta Pictoris at a projected separation of 8 AU from the star, using data
taken in November 2003 with NaCo, the adaptive-optics system installed on the
Very Large Telescope UT4. Eventhough no second epoch detection was available,
there are strong arguments to favor a gravitationally bound companion rather
than a background object. If confirmed and located at a physical separation of
8 AU, this young, hot (~1500 K), massive Jovian companion (~8 Mjup) would be
the closest planet to its star ever imaged, could be formed via core-accretion,
and could explain the main morphological and dynamical properties of the dust
disk. Our goal was to return to Beta Pic five years later to obtain a
second-epoch observation of the companion or, in case of a non-detection,
constrain its orbit. Deep adaptive-optics L'-band direct images of Beta Pic and
Ks-band Four-Quadrant-Phase-Mask (4QPM) coronagraphic images were recorded with
NaCo in January and February 2009. We also use 4QPM data taken in November
2004. No point-like signal with the brightness of the companion candidate
(apparent magnitudes L'=11.2 or Ks ~ 12.5) is detected at projected distances
down to 6.5 AU from the star in the 2009 data. As expected, the non-detection
does not allow to rule out a background object; however, we show that it is
consistent with the orbital motion of a bound companion that got closer to the
star since first observed in 2003 and that is just emerging from behind the
star at the present epoch. We place strong constraints on the possible orbits

The close circumstellar environment of Betelgeuse - Adaptive optics spectro-imaging in the near-IR with VLT/NACO
Context: Betelgeuse is one the largest stars in the sky in terms of angular
diameter. Structures on the stellar photosphere have been detected in the
visible and near-infrared as well as a compact molecular environment called the
MOLsphere. Mid-infrared observations have revealed the nature of some of the
molecules in the MOLsphere, some being the precursor of dust. Aims: Betelgeuse
is an excellent candidate to understand the process of mass loss in red
supergiants. Using diffraction-limited adaptive optics (AO) in the
near-infrared, we probe the photosphere and close environment of Betelgeuse to
study the wavelength dependence of its extension, and to search for
asymmetries. Methods: We obtained AO images with the VLT/NACO instrument,
taking advantage of the "cube" mode of the CONICA camera to record separately a
large number of short-exposure frames. This allowed us to adopt a "lucky
imaging" approach for the data reduction, and obtain diffraction-limited images
over the spectral range 1.04-2.17 m in 10 narrow-band filters. Results: In
all filters, the photosphere of Betelgeuse appears partly resolved. We identify
an asymmetric envelope around the star, with in particular a relatively bright
"plume" extending in the southwestern quadrant up to a radius of approximately
six times the photosphere. The CN molecule provides an excellent match to the
1.09 mic bandhead in absorption in front of the stellar photosphere, but the
emission spectrum of the plume is more difficult to interpret. Conclusions: Our
AO images show that the envelope surrounding Betelgeuse has a complex and
irregular structure. We propose that the southwestern plume is linked either to
the presence of a convective hot spot on the photosphere, or to the rotation of

ARCRAIDER II: Arc search in a sample of non-Abell clusters
We present a search for gravitational arcs in a sample of X-ray luminous,
medium redshift clusters of galaxies. The sample of clusters is called
ARCRAIDER, is based on the ROSAT Bright Survey (RBS) and fulfills the following
criteria: (a) X-ray luminosity Lx>=0.5x10^45erg/s (0.5-2keV band), (b) redshift
range 0.1<=z<=0.52, (c) classified as clusters in the RBS, (d) not a member of
the Abell catalogue and, finally, (e) visible from the ESO sites La
Silla/Paranal (declination \delta<=20deg). In total we found more than 35
(giant) arc/arclet candidates, including a possible radial arc, one
galaxy-galaxy lensing event and a possible quasar triple image in 14 of the 21

Improved age constraints for the AB Dor quadruple system - The binary nature of AB Dor B
We present resolved NACO photometry of the close binary AB Dor B in H- and
Ks-band. AB Dor B is itself known to be a wide binary companion to AB Dor A,
which in turn has a very low-mass close companion named AB Dor C. These four
known components make up the young and dynamically interesting system AB Dor,
which will likely become a benchmark system for calibrating theoretical
pre-main sequence evolutionary mass tracks for low-mass stars. However, for
this purpose the actual age has to be known, and this subject has been a matter
of discussion in the recent scientific literature. We compare our resolved
photometry of AB Dor Ba and Bb with theoretical and empirical isochrones in
order to constrain the age of the system. This leads to an age estimate of
about 50 to 100 Myr. We discuss the implications of such an age range for the

Uncovering the kiloparsec-scale stellar ring of NGC5128
We reveal the stellar light emerging from the kiloparsec-scale, ring-like
structure of the NGC5128 (Centaurus A) galaxy in unprecedented detail. We use
arcsecond-scale resolution near infrared images to create a "dust-free" view of
the central region of the galaxy, which we then use to quantify the shape of
the revealed structure. At the resolution of the data, the structure contains
several hundreds of discreet, point-like or slightly elongated sources. Typical
extinction corrected surface brightness of the structure is K_S = 16.5
mag/arcsec^2, and we estimate the total near infrared luminosity of the
structure to be M = -21 mag. We use diffraction limited (FWHM resolution of ~
0.1", or 1.6 pc) near infrared data taken with the NACO instrument on VLT to
show that the structure decomposes into thousands of separate, mostly
point-like sources. According to the tentative photometry, the most luminous
sources have M_K = -12 mag, naming them red supergiants or relatively low-mass
star clusters. We also discuss the large-scale geometry implied by the

Allocating the Burdens of Climate Action: Consumption-Based Carbon Accounting and the Polluter-Pays Principle
Action must be taken to combat climate change. Yet, how the costs of climate action should be allocated among states remains a question. One popular answer—the polluter-pays principle (PPP)—stipulates that those responsible for causing the problem should pay to address it. While intuitively plausible, the PPP has been subjected to withering criticism in recent years. It is timely, following the Paris Agreement, to develop a new version: one that does not focus on historical production-based emissions but rather allocates climate burdens in proportion to each state’s annual consumption-based emissions. This change in carbon accounting results in a fairer and more environmentally effective principle for distributing climate duties
