Asteroids Observed by The Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We announce the first public release of the SDSS Moving Object Catalog, with
SDSS observations for 58,117 asteroids. The catalog lists astrometric and
photometric data for moving objects observed prior to Dec 15, 2001, and also
includes orbital elements for 10,592 previously known objects. We analyze the
correlation between the orbital parameters and optical colors for the known
objects, and confirm that asteroid dynamical families, defined as clusters in
orbital parameter space, also strongly segregate in color space. Their
distinctive optical colors indicate that the variations in chemical composition
within a family are much smaller than the compositional differences between
families, and strongly support earlier suggestions that asteroids belonging to

Slow Hopping and Spin Dephasing of Coulombically Bound Polaron Pairs in an Organic Semiconductor at Room Temperature
Polaron pairs are intermediate electronic states that are integral to the optoelectronic conversion process in organic semiconductors. Here, we report on electrically detected spin echoes arising from direct quantum control of polaron pair spins in an organic light-emitting diode at room temperature. This approach reveals phase coherence on a microsecond time scale, and offers a direct way to probe charge recombination and dissociation processes in organic devices, revealing temperature-independent intermolecular carrier hopping on slow time scales. In addition, the long spin phase coherence time at room temperature is of potential interest for developing quantum-enhanced sensors and information processing systems which operate at room temperature
A Survey of z~6 Quasars in the SDSS Deep Stripe. II. Discovery of Six Quasars at z_{AB}>21
We present the discovery of six new quasars at z~6 selected from the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) southern survey, a deep imaging survey obtained by
repeatedly scanning a stripe along the celestial equator. The six quasars are
about two magnitudes fainter than the luminous z~6 quasars found in the SDSS
main survey and one magnitude fainter than the quasars reported in Paper I
(Jiang et al. 2008). Four of them comprise a complete flux-limited sample at
21<z_AB<21.8 over an effective area of 195 deg^2. The other two quasars are
fainter than z_AB=22 and are not part of the complete sample. The quasar
luminosity function at z~6 is well described as a single power law
\Phi(L_{1450}) \propto L_{1450}^{\beta} over the luminosity range
-28<M_{1450}<-25. The best-fitting slope \beta varies from -2.6 to -3.1,
depending on the quasar samples used, with a statistical error of 0.3-0.4.
About 40% of the quasars discovered in the SDSS southern survey have very
narrow Lya emission lines, which may indicate small black hole masses and high
Eddington luminosity ratios, and therefore short black hole growth time scales
for these faint quasars at early epochs.Comment: Accepted for publication in A
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Quasar Lens Search. I. Candidate Selection Algorithm
We present an algorithm for selecting an uniform sample of gravitationally
lensed quasar candidates from low-redshift (0.6<z<2.2) quasars brighter than
i=19.1 that have been spectroscopically identified in the SDSS. Our algorithm
uses morphological and color selections that are intended to identify small-
and large-separation lenses, respectively. Our selection algorithm only relies
on parameters that the SDSS standard image processing pipeline generates,
allowing easy and fast selection of lens candidates. The algorithm has been
tested against simulated SDSS images, which adopt distributions of field and
quasar parameters taken from the real SDSS data as input. Furthermore, we take
differential reddening into account. We find that our selection algorithm is
almost complete down to separations of 1'' and flux ratios of 10^-0.5. The
algorithm selects both double and quadruple lenses. At a separation of 2'',
doubles and quads are selected with similar completeness, and above (below) 2''
the selection of quads is better (worse) than for doubles. Our morphological
selection identifies a non-negligible fraction of single quasars: To remove
these we fit images of candidates with a model of two point sources and reject
those with unusually small image separations and/or large magnitude differences
between the two point sources. We estimate the efficiency of our selection
algorithm to be at least 8% at image separations smaller than 2'', comparable
to that of radio surveys. The efficiency declines as the image separation
increases, because of larger contamination from stars. We also present the
magnification factor of lensed images as a function of the image separation,

Origin of spectral broadening in pi-conjugated amorphous semiconductors
We present a study of the picosecond fluorescence dynamics of pi-conjugated semiconducting organic dendrimers in the solid state. By varying the degree of branching within the dendrons, referred to as the dendrimer generation, a control of intermolecular spacing of the emissive core and therefore of the lattice parameter for Forster-type energy transfer is achieved. This allows a distinction between spectral diffusion and excimer formation as the two main sources of spectral broadening in organic semiconductors. Whereas Forster-type dispersive spectral relaxation is independent of temperature but strongly dependent on the interchromophore distance, excimer formation is also strongly thermally activated due to temperature-dependent conformational changes and the influence of thermally activated dynamic disorder. The rapid spectral diffusion allows a determination of the excimer rise in the emission, which is shown to have a profound impact on the steady state luminescence properties of dendrimer films. We show that the dendrimer generation not only allows a microscopic control of intermolecular interactions but also a direct control of the rate of spectral diffusion. Implications for the design of novel materials for optoelectronic devices are discussed
Discovery of Four Gravitationally Lensed Quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present the discovery of four gravitationally lensed quasars selected from
the spectroscopic quasar catalog of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We describe
imaging and spectroscopic follow-up observations that support the lensing
interpretation of the following four quasars: SDSS J0832+0404 (image separation
\theta=1.98", source redshift z_s=1.115, lens redshift z_l=0.659); SDSS
J1216+3529 (\theta=1.49", z_s=2.012); SDSS J1322+1052 (\theta=2.00",
z_s=1.716); and SDSS J1524+4409 (\theta=1.67", z_s=1.210, z_l=0.320). Each
system has two lensed images. We find that the fainter image component of SDSS
J0832+0404 is significantly redder than the brighter component, perhaps because
of differential reddening by the lensing galaxy. The lens potential of SDSS
J1216+3529 might be complicated by the presence of a secondary galaxy near the

On the poverty of a priorism: technology, surveillance in the workplace and employee responses
Many debates about surveillance at work are framed by a set of a priori assumptions about the nature of the employment relationship that inhibits efforts to understand the complexity of employee responses to the spread of new technology at work. In particular, the debate about the prevalence of resistance is hamstrung from the outset by the assumption that all apparently non-compliant acts, whether intentional or not, are to be counted as acts of resistance. Against this background this paper seeks to redress the balance by reviewing results from an ethnographic study of surveillance-capable technologies in a number of British workplaces. It argues for greater attention to be paid to the empirical character of the social relations at work in and through which technologies are deployed and in the context of which employee responses are played out
