    Which came first, the Zajal or the Muwaššaḥa? Some evidence for the oral origins of Hispano-Arabic Strophic poetry

    Up to this point, I have summarized some theoretical arguments, derived from certain structural features of the texts at hand, to suggest why the zajal might antedate the muwaššaḥa, from which the latter could be derived. Nonetheless, until now, we have had little documentary proof that the zajal did in fact precede the muwaššaḥa chronologically, with which to counter the objections of the partisans of the Arabic thesis.     Universal and deterministic manipulation of the quantum state of harmonic oscillators: a route to unitary gates for Fock State qubits

    We present a simple quantum circuit that allows for the universal and deterministic manipulation of the quantum state of confined harmonic oscillators. The scheme is based on the selective interactions of the referred oscillator with an auxiliary three-level system and a classical external driving source, and enables any unitary operations on Fock states, two-by-two. One circuit is equivalent to a single qubit unitary logical gate on Fock states qubits. Sequences of similar protocols allow for complete, deterministic and state-independent manipulation of the harmonic oscillator quantum state.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Behavioral Mapless Navigation Using Rings

    This paper presents work on the development and implementation of a novel approach to robotic navigation. In this system, map-building and localization for obstacle avoidance are discarded in favor of moment-by-moment behavioral processing of the sonar sensor data. To accomplish this, we developed a network of behaviors that communicate through the passing of rings, data structures that are similar in form to the sonar data itself and express the decisions of each behavior. Through the use of these rings, behaviors can moderate each other, conflicting impulses can be mediated, and designers can easily connect modules to create complex emergent navigational techniques. We discuss the development of a number of these modules and their successful use as a navigation system in the Trinity omnidirectional robot

    Voluntary Environmental Disclosure by Australian Listed Mineral Mining Companies: an Application of Stakeholder Theory

    Within the stakeholder theory framework this paper examines the extent of voluntary environmental disclosure (ED) in relation to characteristics of Australian listed mineral mining firms. Three indexes, words, unweighted and weighted index, are calculated to measure the association of total ED and categories of total ED with firm characteristics within the three dimensions of stockholder theory. We find that the three indexes for total ED and categories of disclosure are significantly associated. Consequently, a single construct is employed as a surrogate for the indexes. The result of Ordinary Least Squares Regression of this construct as a dependent variable with ownership diffusion, financial leverage and membership of the Australian Mining Industry Council (AMIC) as proxies for stakeholder power; the presence of a corporate environmental committee as a proxy for strategic posture; retum on equity and systematic risk as proxies for economic performance ; and firm size and commercial production as control variables showed that membership of AMIC and size were statistically significant. The implication of this finding is that financial variables do not explain voluntary ED and that the variables used in the strategic posture and economic performance dimensions of stakeholder theory are not significant.     Shallow extra mixing in solar twins inferred from Be abundances

    Lithium and beryllium are destroyed at different temperatures in stellar interiors. As such, their relative abundances offer excellent probes of the nature and extent of mixing processes within and below the convection zone. We determine Be abundances for a sample of eight solar twins for which Li abundances have previously been determined. The analyzed solar twins span a very wide range of age, 0.5-8.2 Gyr, which enables us to study secular evolution of Li and Be depletion. We gathered high-quality UVES/VLT spectra and obtained Be abundances by spectral synthesis of the Be II 313 nm doublet. The derived beryllium abundances exhibit no significant variation with age. The more fragile Li, however, exhibits a monotonically decreasing abundance with increasing age. Therefore, relatively shallow extra mixing below the convection zone is necessary to simultaneously account for the observed Li and Be behavior in the Sun and solar twins
