Six-fold configurational anisotropy and magnetic reversal in nanoscale Permalloy triangles
Six-fold configurational anisotropy was studied in Permalloy triangles, in
which the shape symmetry order yields two energetically non-degenerate
micromagnetic configurations of the spins, the so-called "Y" and "buckle"
states. A twelve pointed switching astroid was measured using magneto-optical
experiments and successfully reproduced numerically, with different polar
quadrants identified as specific magnetic transitions, thereby giving a
comprehensive view of the magnetic reversal in these structures. A detailed
analysis highlighted the necessity to include the physical rounding of the
structures in the simulations to account for the instability of the Y state.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Spot distribution and fast surface evolution on Vega
Spectral signatures of surface spots were recently discovered from high
cadence observations of the A star Vega. We aim at constraining the surface
distribution of these photospheric inhomogeneities, and investigating a
possible short term evolution of the spot pattern. Using data collected over
five consecutive nights, we employ the Doppler Imaging method to reconstruct
three different maps of the stellar surface, from three consecutive subsets of
the whole time-series. The surface maps display a complex distribution of dark
and bright spots, covering most of the visible fraction of the stellar surface.
A number of surface features are consistently recovered in all three maps, but
other features seem to evolve over the time span of observations, suggesting
that fast changes can affect the surface of Vega within a few days at most. The
short-term evolution is observed as emergence or disappearance of individual
spots, and may also show up as zonal flows, with low-latitude and high latitude
belts rotating faster than intermediate latitudes. It is tempting to relate the
surface brightness activity to the complex magnetic field topology previously
reconstructed for Vega, although strictly simultaneous brightness and magnetic

Laser frequency combs and ultracold neutrons to probe braneworlds through induced matter swapping between branes
This paper investigates a new experimental framework to test the braneworld
hypothesis. Recent theoretical results have shown the possibility of matter
exchange between branes under the influence of suitable magnetic vector
potentials. It is shown that the required conditions might be achieved with
present-day technology. The experiment uses a source of pulsed and coherent
electromagnetic radiation and relies on the Hansch frequency comb technique
well-known in ultrahigh-precision spectroscopy. A good matter candidate for
testing the hypothesis is a polarized ultracold neutron gas for which the

Structural behavior of uranium dioxide under pressure by LSDA+U calculations
The structural behavior of UO2 under high pressure up to 300GPa has been
studied by first-principles calculations with LSDA+U approximation. The results
show that a pressure-induced structural transition to the cotunnite-type
(orthorhombic Pnma) phase occurs at 38GPa. It agrees well with the
experimentally observed ~42 GPa. An isostructural transition following that is
also predicted to take place from 80 to 130GPa, which has not yet been observed
in experiments. Further high compression beyond 226GPa will result in a
metallic and paramagnetic transition. It corresponds to a volume of 90A^3 per
cell, in good agreement with a previous theoretical analysis in the reduction
of volume required to delocalize 5f states.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
Magnetic topology and surface differential rotation on the K1 subgiant of the RS CVn system HR 1099
We present here spectropolarimetric observations of the RS CVn system HR 1099
(V711 Tau) secured from 1998 February to 2002 January with the
spectropolarimeter MuSiCoS at the Telescope Bernard Lyot (Observatoire du Pic
du Midi, France). We apply Zeeman-Doppler Imaging and reconstruct brightness
and magnetic surface topologies of the K1 primary subgiant of the system, at
five different epochs. We confirm the presence of large, axisymmetric regions
where the magnetic field is mainly azimuthal, providing further support to the
hypothesis that dynamo processes may be distributed throughout the whole
convective zone in this star. We study the short-term evolution of surface
structures from a comparison of our images with observations secured at
close-by epochs by Donati et al. (2003) at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We
conclude that the small-scale brightness and magnetic patterns undergo major
changes within a timescale of 4 to 6 weeks, while the largest structures remain
stable over several years. We report the detection of a weak surface
differential rotation (both from brightness and magnetic tracers) indicating
that the equator rotates faster than the pole with a difference in rotation
rate between the pole and the equator about 4 times smaller than that of the
Sun. This result suggests that tidal forces also impact the global dynamic
equilibrium of convective zones in cool active stars.Comment: accepted by MNRA
Long-term magnetic field stability of Vega
We present new spectropolarimetric observations of the normal A-type star
Vega, obtained during the summer of 2010 with NARVAL at T\'elescope Bernard
Lyot (Pic du Midi Observatory). This new time-series is constituted of 615
spectra collected over 6 different nights. We use the
Least-Square-Deconvolution technique to compute, from each spectrum, a mean
line profile with a signal-to-noise ratio close to 20,000. After averaging all
615 polarized observations, we detect a circularly polarized Zeeman signature
consistent in shape and amplitude with the signatures previously reported from
our observations of 2008 and 2009. The surface magnetic geometry of the star,
reconstructed using the technique of Zeeman-Doppler Imaging, agrees with the
maps obtained in 2008 and 2009, showing that most recognizable features of the
photospheric field of Vega are only weakly distorted by large-scale surface

Lifelong Augmentation of Multi-Modal Streaming Autobiographical Memories
Robot systems that interact with humans over extended periods of time will benefit from storing and recalling large amounts of accumulated sensorimotor and interaction data. We provide a principled framework for the cumulative organisation of streaming autobiographical data so that data can be continuously processed and augmented as the processing and reasoning abilities of the agent develop and further interactions with humans take place. As an example, we show how a kinematic structure learning algorithm reasons a-posteriori about the skeleton of a human hand. A partner can be asked to provide feedback about the augmented memories, which can in turn be supplied to the reasoning processes in order to adapt their parameters. We employ active, multi-modal remembering, so the robot as well as humans can gain insights of both the original and augmented memories. Our framework is capable of storing discrete and continuous data in real-time. The data can cover multiple modalities and several layers of abstraction (e.g. from raw sound signals over sentences to extracted meanings). We show a typical interaction with a human partner using an iCub humanoid robot. The framework is implemented in a platform-independent manner. In particular, we validate its multi platform capabilities using the iCub, Baxter and NAO robots. We also provide an interface to cloud based services, which allow automatic annotation of episodes. Our framework is geared towards the developmental robotics community, as it 1) provides a variety of interfaces for other modules, 2) unifies previous works on autobiographical memory, and 3) is licensed as open source software
