Decomposition of multicomponent mass spectra using Bayesian probability theory
We present a method for the decomposition of mass spectra of mixture gases
using Bayesian probability theory. The method works without any calibration
measurement and therefore applies also to the analysis of spectra containing
unstable species. For the example of mixtures of three different hydrocarbon
gases the algorithm provides concentrations and cracking coefficients of each
mixture component as well as their confidence intervals. The amount of
information needed to obtain reliable results and its relation to the accuracy
of our analysis are discussed
Optimization of the leak conductance in the squid giant axon
We report on a theoretical study showing that the leak conductance density,
\GL, in the squid giant axon appears to be optimal for the action potential
firing frequency. More precisely, the standard assumption that the leak current
is composed of chloride ions leads to the result that the experimental value
for \GL is very close to the optimal value in the Hodgkin-Huxley model which
minimizes the absolute refractory period of the action potential, thereby
maximizing the maximum firing frequency under stimulation by sharp, brief input
current spikes to one end of the axon. The measured value of \GL also appears
to be close to optimal for the frequency of repetitive firing caused by a
constant current input to one end of the axon, especially when temperature
variations are taken into account. If, by contrast, the leak current is assumed
to be composed of separate voltage-independent sodium and potassium currents,

Effects of spin fluctuations in the t-J model
Recent experiments on the Fermi surface and the electronic structure of the
cuprate-supercondutors showed the importance of short range antiferromagnetic
correlations for the physics in these systems. Theoretically, features like
shadow bands were predicted and calculated mainly for the Hubbard model. In our
approach we calculate an approximate selfenergy of the - model. Solving
the Hubbard model in the Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) yields a
selfenergy that contains most of the local correlations as a starting point.
Effects of the nearest neighbor spin interaction are then included in a
heuristical manner. Formally like in -perturbation theory all ring diagrams,
with the single bubble assumed to be purely local, are summed to get a
correction to the DMFT-self engergy This procedure causes new bands and can
furnish strong deformation of quasiparticle bands. % Our results are finally

Shadow band in the one-dimensional large Hubbard model
We show that the factorized wave-function of Ogata and Shiba can be used to
calculate the dependent spectral functions of the one-dimensional, infinite
Hubbard model, and of some extensions to finite . The resulting spectral
function is remarkably rich: In addition to low energy features typical of
Luttinger liquids, there is a well defined band, which we identify as the
shadow band resulting from spin fluctuations. This band should be
detectable experimentally because its intensity is comparable to that of the

Static overscreening and nonlinear response in the Hubbard Model
We investigate the static charge response for the Hubbard model. Using the
Slave-Boson method in the saddle-point approximation we calculate the charge
susceptibility. We find that RPA works quite well close to half-filling,
breaking, of course, down close to the Mott transition. Away from half filling
RPA is much less reliable: Already for very small values of the Hubbard
interaction U, the linear response becomes much more efficient than RPA,
eventually leading to overscreening already beyond quite moderate values of U.
To understand this behavior we give a simple argument, which implies that the
response to an external perturbation at large U should actually be strongly
non-linear. This prediction is confirmed by the results of exact

Relative Reactivity of the Metal-Amido versus Metal-Imido Bond in Linked Cp-Amido and Half-Sandwich Complexes of Vanadium
Treatment of (η5-C5H4C2H4NR)V(N-t-Bu)Me (R = Me, i-Pr) and CpV(N-p-Tol)(N-i-Pr2)Me (Cp = η5-C5H5) with B(C6F5)3 or [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] results in formation of the corresponding cations, [(η5-C5H4C2H4NR)V(N-t-Bu)]+ and [CpV(N-p-Tol)(N-i-Pr2)]+. The latter could also be generated as its N,N-dimethylaniline adduct by treatment of the methyl complex with [PhNMe2H][BAr4] (Ar = Ph, C6F5). Instead, the analogous reaction with the linked Cp-amido precursor results in protonation of the imido-nitrogen atom. Sequential cyclometalation of the amide substituents gave cationic imine complexes [(η5-C5H4C2H4NCR'2)V(NH-t-Bu)]+ (R' = H, Me) and methane. Reaction of cationic [(η5-C5H4C2H4NR)V(N-t-Bu)]+ with olefins affords the corresponding olefin adducts, whereas treatment with 1 or 2 equiv of 2-butyne results in insertion of the alkyne into the vanadium-nitrogen single bond, affording the mono- and bis-insertion products [(η5-C5H4C2H4N(i-Pr)C2Me2)V(N-t-Bu)]+ and [(η5-C5H4C2H4N(i-Pr)C4Me4)V(N-t-Bu)]+. The same reaction with the half-sandwich compound [CpV(N-p-Tol)(N-i-Pr2)]+ results in a paramagnetic compound that, upon alcoholysis, affords sec-butylidene-p-tolylamine, suggesting an initial [2+2] cycloaddition reaction. The difference in reactivity between the V-N bond versus the V=N bond was further studied using computational methods. Results were compared to the isoelectronic titanium system CpTi(NH)(NH2). These studies indicate that the kinetic product in each system is derived from a [2+2] cycloaddition reaction. For titanium, this was found as the thermodynamic product as well, whereas the insertion reaction was found to be thermodynamically more favorable in the case of vanadium.
Dynamical Properties of Two Coupled Hubbard Chains at Half-filling
Using grand canonical Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations combined with
Maximum Entropy analytic continuation, as well as analytical methods, we
examine the one- and two-particle dynamical properties of the Hubbard model on
two coupled chains at half-filling. The one-particle spectral weight function,
, undergoes a qualitative change with interchain hopping
associated with a transition from a four-band insulator to a two-band
insulator. A simple analytical model based on the propagation of exact rung
singlet states gives a good description of the features at large . For
smaller , is similar to that of the
one-dimensional model, with a coherent band of width the effective
antiferromagnetic exchange reasonably well-described by renormalized
spin-wave theory. The coherent band rides on a broad background of width
several times the parallel hopping integral , an incoherent structure
similar to that found in calculations on both the one- and two-dimensional
models. We also present QMC results for the two-particle spin and charge
excitation spectra, and relate their behavior to the rung singlet picture for
