A Closing Lemma for a Class of Symplectic Diffeomorphisms
We prove a closing lemma for a class of partially hyperbolic symplectic
diffeomorphisms. We show that for a generic symplectic diffeomorphism, , with two dimensional center and close to a product map, the set
of all periodic points is dense
Oscillations in stellar superflares
Two different mechanisms may act to induce quasi-periodic pulsations (QPP) in
whole-disk observations of stellar flares. One mechanism may be
magneto-hydromagnetic (MHD) forces and other processes acting on flare loops as
seen in the Sun. The other mechanism may be forced local acoustic oscillations
due to the high-energy particle impulse generated by the flare (known as
`sunquakes' in the Sun). We analyze short-cadence Kepler data of 257 flares in
75 stars to search for QPP in the flare decay branch or post-flare oscillations
which may be attributed to either of these two mechanisms. About 18 percent of
stellar flares show a distinct bump in the flare decay branch of unknown
origin. The bump does not seem to be a highly-damped global oscillation because
the periods of the bumps derived from wavelet analysis do not correlate with
any stellar parameter. We detected damped oscillations covering several cycles
(QPP), in seven flares on five stars. The periods of these oscillations also do
not correlate with any stellar parameter, suggesting that these may be a due to
flare loop oscillations. We searched for forced global oscillations which might
result after a strong flare. To this end, we investigated the behaviour of the
amplitudes of solar-like oscillations in eight stars before and after a flare.
However, no clear amplitude change could be detected. We also analyzed the
amplitudes of the self-excited pulsations in two delta Scuti stars and one
gamma Doradus star before and after a flare. Again, no clear amplitude changes
were found. Our conclusions are that a new process needs to be found to explain
the high incidence of bumps in stellar flare light curves, that flare loop
oscillations may have been detected in a few stars and that no conclusive
evidence exists as yet for flare induced global acoustic oscillations

Tidal influence on Rutford Ice Stream, West Antarctica: observations of surface flow and basal processes from closely-spaced GPS and passive seismic stations
High-resolution surface velocity measurements and passive seismic observations from Rutford Ice Stream, West Antarctica, 40 km upstream from the grounding line are presented. These measurements indicate a complex relationship between the ocean tides and currents, basal conditions and ice-stream flow. Both the mean basal seismicity and the velocity of the ice stream are modulated by the tides. Seismic activity increases twice during each semi-diurnal tidal cycle. The tidal analysis shows the largest velocity variation is at the fortnightly period, with smaller variations superimposed at diurnal and semi-diurnal frequencies. The general pattern of the observed velocity is two velocity peaks during each semi-diurnal tidal cycle, but sometimes three peaks are observed. This pattern of two or three peaks is more regular during spring tides, when the largest-amplitude velocity variations are observed, than during neap tides. This is the first time that velocity and level of seismicity are shown to correlate and respond to tidal forcing as far as 40 km upstream from the grounding line of a large ice stream

Reaching across narrative space: Re-interpreting one teacher’s experience with technology
In this paper, the authors investigate one teacher’s utilization of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by drawing context from two of his life-stories: one that he interprets as “ruin” and the other “success.” Methodologically grounded in narrative inquiry, this paper contains excerpts from the teacher’s authentic narratives and their interpretation from the point of information systems research, known as the social process model. The findings emphasize that with the dialogic involvement of educational researchers, it is possible to reach a deeper understanding of the events that influenced the teacher’s experience with technology. Such synergistic alliances amongst educational researchers and teachers are key for detecting and overcoming the linguistic and operational barriers that exist between ICT theorists and practitioners
Long-term and recent changes in sea level in the Falkland Islands
Mean sea level measurements made at Port Louis in the Falkland Islands in 1981-2, 1984 and 2009, together with values from the nearby permanent tide gauge at Port Stanley, have been compared to measurements made at Port Louis in 1842 by James Clark Ross. The long-term rate of change of sea level is estimated to have been +0.75 ± 0.35 mm/year between 1842 and the early 1980s, after correction for air pressure effects and for vertical land movement due to Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA). The 2009 Port Louis data set is of particular importance due to the availability of simultaneous information from Port Stanley. The data set has been employed in two ways, by providing a short recent estimate of mean sea level itself, and by enabling the effective combination of measurements at the two sites. The rate of sea level rise observed since 1992, when the modern Stanley gauge was installed, has been larger at 2.51 ± 0.58 mm/year, after correction for air pressure and GIA. This rate compares to a value of 2.79 ± 0.42 mm/year obtained from satellite altimetry in the region over the same period. Such a relatively recent acceleration in the rate of sea level rise is consistent with findings from other locations in the southern hemisphere and globall
