Anomalous quantum reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates from a silicon surface: the role of dynamical excitations
We investigate the effect of inter-atomic interactions on the
quantum-mechanical reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates from regions of
rapid potential variation. The reflection process depends critically on the
density and incident velocity of the condensate. For low densities and high
velocities, the atom cloud has almost the same form before and after
reflection. Conversely, at high densities and low velocities, the reflection
process generates solitons and vortex rings that fragment the condensate. We
show that this fragmentation can explain the anomalously low reflection
probabilities recently measured for low-velocity condensates incident on a

Creation of solitons and vortices by Bragg reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice
We study the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice and
harmonic trap. The condensates are set in motion by displacing the trap and
initially follow simple semiclassical paths, shaped by the lowest energy band.
Above a critical displacement, the condensate undergoes Bragg reflection. For
high atom densities, the first Bragg reflection generates a train of solitons
and vortices, which destabilize the condensate and trigger explosive expansion.
At lower densities, soliton and vortex formation requires multiple Bragg

Perturbative matching of staggered four-fermion operators with hypercubic fat links
We calculate the one-loop matching coefficients between continuum and lattice
four-fermion operators for lattice operators constructed using staggered
fermions and improved by the use of fattened links. In particular, we consider
hypercubic fat links and SU(3) projected Fat-7 links, and their mean-field
improved versions. We calculate only current-current diagrams, so that our
results apply for operators whose flavor structure does not allow
``eye-diagrams''. We present general formulae, based on two independent
approaches, and give numerical results for the cases in which the operators
have the taste (staggered flavor) of the pseudo-Goldstone pion. We find that
the one-loop corrections are reduced down to the 10-20% level, resolving the
problem of large perturbative corrections for staggered fermion calculations of

Perturbative Corrections for Staggered Four-Fermion Operators
We present results for one-loop matching coefficients between continuum
four-fermion operators, defined in the Naive Dimensional Regularization scheme,
and staggered fermion operators of various types. We calculate diagrams
involving gluon exchange between quark lines, and ``penguin'' diagrams
containing quark loops. For the former we use Landau gauge operators, with and
without improvement, and including the tadpole improvement suggested by
Lepage and Mackenzie.For the latter we use gauge-invariant operators. Combined
with existing results for two-loop anomalous dimension matrices and one-loop
matching coefficients, our results allow a lattice calculation of the
amplitudes for mixing and decays with all corrections of
included. We also discuss the mixing of operators with
lower dimension operators, and show that, with staggered fermions, only a
single lower dimension operator need be removed by non-perturbative

Reliably Classifying Novice Programmer Exam Responses using the SOLO Taxonomy
Abstract: Past papers of the BRACElet project have described an approach to teaching and assessing students where the students are presented with short pieces of code, and are instructed to explain, in plain English, what the code does. The student responses to these types of questions can be analysed according to the SOLO taxonomy. Some students display an understanding of the code as a single, functional whole, while other students cannot âsee the forest for the treesâ . However, classifying student responses into the taxonomy is not always straightforward. This paper analyses the reliability of the SOLO taxonomy as a means of categorising student responses. The paper derives an augmented set of SOLO categories for application to the programming domain, and proposes a set of guidelines for researchers to use
Perturbative Corrections for Staggered Fermion Bilinears
We calculate the perturbative corrections to fermion bilinears that are used
in numerical simulations when extracting weak matrix elements using staggered
fermions. This extends previous calculations of Golterman and Smit, and Daniel
and Sheard. In particular, we calculate the corrections for non-local bilinears
defined in Landau gauge with gauge links excluded. We do this for the simplest
operators, i.e. those defined on a hypercube, and for tree level improved
operators which live on hypercubes. We also consider gauge invariant
operators in which the ``tadpole'' contributions are suppressed by projecting
the sums of products of gauge links back in to the gauge group. In all cases,
we find that the variation in the size of the perturbative corrections is
smaller than those with the gauge invariant unimproved operators. This is most
strikingly true for the smeared operators. We investigate the efficacy of the
mean-field method of Lepage and Mackenzie at summing up tadpole contributions.

Termination Casts: A Flexible Approach to Termination with General Recursion
This paper proposes a type-and-effect system called Teqt, which distinguishes
terminating terms and total functions from possibly diverging terms and partial
functions, for a lambda calculus with general recursion and equality types. The
central idea is to include a primitive type-form "Terminates t", expressing
that term t is terminating; and then allow terms t to be coerced from possibly
diverging to total, using a proof of Terminates t. We call such coercions
termination casts, and show how to implement terminating recursion using them.
For the meta-theory of the system, we describe a translation from Teqt to a
logical theory of termination for general recursive, simply typed functions.
Every typing judgment of Teqt is translated to a theorem expressing the

Fiber modulators and fiber amplifiers for LISA
We present the sideband phase characteristics of a fiber-coupled integrated electro-optical modulator (EOM) at a modulation frequency of 2 GHz for Fourier frequencies from 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz. The upper phase noise limit was almost an order of magnitude better than required for LISA. The EOM's phase dependencies on temperature and transmitted optical power were measured and found to be uncritical. Additionally we have investigated three optical amplifiers emitting 1 W. Their differential phase noise and optical pathlength noise as one contribution to differential phase noise were measured. The measured differential phase noise was within the requirement. The dependencies of differential phase noise on pump power were measured and requirements for the operation of the amplifier on the LISA satellite derived.DLR/50 OQ 0601DFG/EXC/QUES
A Demonstration of LISA Laser Communication
Over the past few years questions have been raised concerning the use of
laser communications links between sciencecraft to transmit phase information
crucial to the reduction of laser frequency noise in the LISA science
measurement. The concern is that applying medium frequency phase modulations to
the laser carrier could compromise the phase stability of the LISA fringe
signal. We have modified the table-top interferometer presented in a previous
article by applying phase modulations to the laser beams in order to evaluate
the effects of such modulations on the LISA science fringe signal. We have
demonstrated that the phase resolution of the science signal is not degraded by
the presence of medium frequency phase modulations.Comment: minor corrections found in the CQG versio
Corporate governance compliance and disclosure in the banking sector: using data from Japan
Using regression model this study investigates which characteristics of a bank is associated with the extent of corporate governance disclosure in Japan. The findings suggest that on average 8 banks out of a sample of 46 disclose optimal corporate governance information. The regression model results reveal in general that non-executive directors, cross-ownership, capital adequacy ratio and type of auditors are associated with the extent of corporate governance disclosure. Of these four variables, non-executive directors have a more significant impact on the extent of disclosure contrary to total assets and audit firms of banks in the context of Japan. The findings of this paper are relevant for corporate regulators, professional associations and developers of corporate governance code when designing or updating corporate governance code
