Massive investments in bike infrastructure have got more people moving in Memphis, but they have also affected social inequality
In the past six years Memphis, Tennessee has undergone a cycling revolution, creating more than 100 miles of bicycle lanes and greenways. Despite the beneficial environmental implications of such a scheme, is bike oriented development just a way of reinforcing the status quo of social inequality? Kevin T. Smiley, Wanda Rushing, and Michele Scott find that while such bike schemes are likely to spur economic development and raise property values, these economic benefits are most likely to go to developers and may result in further racialized gentrification
Fibers and global geometry of functions
Since the seminal work of Ambrosetti and Prodi, the study of global folds was
enriched by geometric concepts and extensions accomodating new examples. We
present the advantages of considering fibers, a construction dating to Berger
and Podolak's view of the original theorem. A description of folds in terms of
properties of fibers gives new perspective to the usual hypotheses in the
subject. The text is intended as a guide, outlining arguments and stating
results which will be detailed elsewhere
Fibrinogen regulates the cytotoxicity of mycobacterial trehalose dimycolate, but is not required for cell recruitment, cytokine response, or control of mycobacterial infection
During inflammatory responses and wound healing, the conversion of soluble fibrinogen to fibrin, an insoluble extracellular matrix, long has been assumed to create a scaffold for the migration of leukocytes and fibroblasts. Previous studies concluded that fibrinogen is a necessary cofactor for mycobacterial trehalose 6,6-dimycolate-induced responses, because trehalose dimycolate-coated beads, to which fibrinogen was ad-sorbed, were more inflammatory than those to which other plasma proteins were adsorbed. Herein, we investigate roles for fibrin(ogen) in an in vivo model of mycobacterial granuloma formation and in infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis. In wild-type mice, the subcutaneous injection of trehalose dimycolate-coated polystyrene microspheres, suspended within Matrigel, elicited a pyogranulomatous response during the course of 12 days. In fibrinogen-deficient mice, neutrophils were recruited but a more suppurative lesion developed, with the marked degradation and disintegration of the matrix. Compared to that in wild-type mice, the early formation of granulation tissue in fibrinogen-deficient mice was edematous, hypocellular, and disorganized. Anti-CD25 antibody-mediated depletion of effector T cell populations enhances susceptibility of mice to acute but not chronic Toxoplasma gondii infection.
Natural regulatory T cells (Tregs) constitutively express the IL-2R alpha-chain (CD25) on their surface. Consequently, administration of anti-CD25 Abs is a commonly used technique to deplete Treg populations in vivo. However, activated effector T cells may also transiently express CD25, and are thus also potential targets for anti-CD25 Abs. In this study using Toxoplasma gondii as a model proinflammatory infection, we have examined the capacity of anti-CD25 Abs to target effector T cell populations during an inflammatory episode, to determine to what extent that this action may modulate the outcome of disease. Anti-CD25 Ab-treated C57BL/6 mice displayed significantly reduced CD4(+) T cell IFN-gamma production during acute T. gondii infection and exhibited reduced weight loss and liver pathology during early acute infection; aspects of infection previously associated with effector CD4(+) T cell responses. In agreement, anti-CD25 Ab administration impaired parasite control and caused mice to succumb to infection during late acute/early chronic stages of infection with elevated tissue parasite burdens. In contrast, anti-CD25 Ab treatment of mice with established chronic infections did not markedly affect brain parasite burdens, suggesting that protective T cell populations do not express CD25 during chronic stages of T. gondii infection. In summary, we have demonstrated that anti-CD25 Abs may directly abrogate effector T cell responses during an inflammatory episode, highlighting important limitations of the use of anti-CD25 Ab administration to examine Treg function during inflammatory settings
A LEKID-based CMB instrument design for large-scale observations in Greenland
We present the results of a feasibility study, which examined deployment of a
ground-based millimeter-wave polarimeter, tailored for observing the cosmic
microwave background (CMB), to Isi Station in Greenland. The instrument for
this study is based on lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs) and
an F/2.4 catoptric, crossed-Dragone telescope with a 500 mm aperture. The
telescope is mounted inside the receiver and cooled to K by a
closed-cycle He refrigerator to reduce background loading on the detectors.
Linearly polarized signals from the sky are modulated with a metal-mesh
half-wave plate that is rotated at the aperture stop of the telescope with a
hollow-shaft motor based on a superconducting magnetic bearing. The modular
detector array design includes at least 2300 LEKIDs, and it can be configured
for spectral bands centered on 150~GHz or greater. Our study considered
configurations for observing in spectral bands centered on 150, 210 and
267~GHz. The entire polarimeter is mounted on a commercial precision rotary air
bearing, which allows fast azimuth scan speeds with negligible vibration and
mechanical wear over time. A slip ring provides power to the instrument,
enabling circular scans (360 degrees of continuous rotation). This mount, when
combined with sky rotation and the latitude of the observation site, produces a
hypotrochoid scan pattern, which yields excellent cross-linking and enables
34\% of the sky to be observed using a range of constant elevation scans. This
scan pattern and sky coverage combined with the beam size (15~arcmin at
150~GHz) makes the instrument sensitive to in the angular
power spectra
Henry Hardin Cherry: The Early Period of a Life\u27s Work
The first fifty years of Henry Hardin Cherry show a very formative period of his life. Born in 1864, Cherry left his family farm at the age of 21 to pursue his own education and by 1892 become head of a school in Bowling Green that was in trouble financially and and also had a shrinking enrollment. He began the transformation of this school and it became his life\u27s work. This work included keeping the Southern Normal School afloat in its assorted difficulties, getting the school installed as a state-supported normal school and gaining adequate funding from the state to ensure its continuance and the placement of a new campus. Leading the school itself had many challenges. Cherry\u27s leadership with administration, faculty and students showed his fervor for the favorable completion of his work. Family and friends were important as well and, even though he spent a good deal of time working on behalf of his school, he had many cherished relationships in this time period. His character shone through in all of this as a man who held his passions confidently, worked with a strong ethic and drove his visionary ability to a high, yet practical standard
Aristotle’s assertoric syllogistic and modern relevance logic
This paper sets out to evaluate the claim that Aristotle’s Assertoric Syllogistic is a relevance logic or shows significant similarities with it. I prepare the grounds for a meaningful comparison by extracting the notion of relevance employed in the most influential work on modern relevance logic, Anderson and Belnap’s Entailment. This notion is characterized by two conditions imposed on the concept of validity: first, that some meaning content is shared between the premises and the conclusion, and second, that the premises of a proof are actually used to derive the conclusion. Turning to Aristotle’s Prior Analytics, I argue that there is evidence that Aristotle’s Assertoric Syllogistic satisfies both conditions. Moreover, Aristotle at one point explicitly addresses the potential harmfulness of syllogisms with unused premises. Here, I argue that Aristotle’s analysis allows for a rejection of such syllogisms on formal grounds established in the foregoing parts of the Prior Analytics. In a final section I consider the view that Aristotle distinguished between validity on the one hand and syllogistic validity on the other. Following this line of reasoning, Aristotle’s logic might not be a relevance logic, since relevance is part of syllogistic validity and not, as modern relevance logic demands, of general validity. I argue that the reasons to reject this view are more compelling than the reasons to accept it and that we can, cautiously, uphold the result that Aristotle’s logic is a relevance logic
The Detector System for the Stratospheric Kinetic Inductance Polarimeter (SKIP)
The Stratospheric Kinetic Inductance Polarimeter (SKIP) is a proposed
balloon-borne experiment designed to study the cosmic microwave background, the
cosmic infrared background and Galactic dust emission by observing 1133 square
degrees of sky in the Northern Hemisphere with launches from Kiruna, Sweden.
The instrument contains 2317 single-polarization, horn-coupled, aluminum
lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKID). The LEKIDs will be
maintained at 100 mK with an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator. The
polarimeter operates in two configurations, one sensitive to a spectral band
centered on 150 GHz and the other sensitive to 260 and 350 GHz bands. The
detector readout system is based on the ROACH-1 board, and the detectors will
be biased below 300 MHz. The detector array is fed by an F/2.4 crossed-Dragone
telescope with a 500 mm aperture yielding a 15 arcmin FWHM beam at 150 GHz. To
minimize detector loading and maximize sensitivity, the entire optical system
will be cooled to 1 K. Linearly polarized sky signals will be modulated with a
metal-mesh half-wave plate that is mounted at the telescope aperture and
rotated by a superconducting magnetic bearing. The observation program consists

The prevalence and incidence of mental ill-health in adults with autism and intellectual disabilities
The prevalence, and incidence, of mental ill-health in adults with intellectual disabilities and autism were compared with the whole population with intellectual disabilities, and with controls, matched individually for age, gender, ability-level, and Down syndrome. Although the adults with autism had a higher point prevalence of problem behaviours compared with the whole adult population with intellectual disabilities, compared with individually matched controls there was no difference in prevalence, or incidence of either problem behaviours or other mental ill-health. Adults with autism who had problem behaviours were less likely to recover over a two-year period than were their matched controls. Apparent differences in rates of mental ill-health are accounted for by factors other than autism, including Down syndrome and ability level
