The Quest for New Approaches in Myocarditis and Inflammatory Cardiomyopathy

    Get PDF
Myocarditis is a diverse group of heart-specific immune processes classified by clinical and histopathological manifestations. Up to 40% of dilated cardiomyopathy is associated with inflammation or viral infection. Recent experimental studies revealed complex regulatory roles for several microribonucleic acids and T-cell and macrophage subtypes. Although the prevalence of myocarditis remained stable between 1990 and 2013 at about 22 per 100,000 people, overall mortality from cardiomyopathy and myocarditis has decreased since 2005. The diagnostic and prognostic value of cardiac magnetic resonance has increased with new, higher-sensitivity sequences. Positron emission tomography has emerged as a useful tool for diagnosis of cardiac sarcoidosis. The sensitivity of endomyocardial biopsy may be increased, especially in suspected sarcoidosis, by the use of electrogram guidance to target regions of abnormal signal. Investigational treatments on the basis of mechanistic advances are entering clinical trials. Revised management recommendations regarding athletic participation after acute myocarditis have heightened the importance of early diagnosis. Heavy-Light Decay Constants: Conclusions from the Wilson Action

    Get PDF
We report on the results of a MILC collaboration calculation of fBf_B, fBsf_{B_s}, fDf_D, fDsf_{D_s} and their ratios. We discuss the most important errors in more detail than we have elsewhere.Comment: LATTICE98(heavyqk) 3 latex pages and 3 postscript figures. The perturbative correction calculated by Kuramashi has been adjusted to take into account the fact that we match to the continuum at the kinetic mass of the heavy meson, not the pole mass. This produces a 2 to 4 MeV change in final results for decay constants, and has negligible effect on decay constant ratio

SU(3) Lattice Gauge Theory With Adjoint Action At Nonzero Temperature

    Get PDF
We study the thermal phase diagram of pure SU(3) gauge theory with fundamental and adjoint couplings. We improve previous estimates of the position of the bulk transition line and determine the thermal deconfinement transition lines for Nt=2,4,6,N_t=2,4,6, and 8. For Nt>4N_t > 4 the deconfinement transition line splits cleanly away from the bulk transition line. With increasing NtN_t the thermal deconfinement transition lines shift to increasingly weaker coupling, joining onto the bulk transition line at increasingly larger βa\beta_a in a pattern consistent with the usual universality picture of lattice gauge theories.Comment: Talk presented by U. DDF and Pohlmeyer invariants of (super)string

We show how the Pohlmeyer invariants of the bosonic string are expressible in terms of DDF invariants. Quantization of the DDF observables in the usual way yields a consistent quantization of the algebra of Pohlmeyer invariants. Furthermore it becomes straightforward to generalize the Pohlmeyer invariants to the superstring as well as to all backgrounds which allow a free field realization of the worldsheet theory.Comment: 17 pp, minor typos corrected, references to papers by Isaev and Borodulin added, which contain essentially the same results as reported her

Heavy-light meson decay constants with N_f=3

    Get PDF
During the past year the MILC Collaboration has continued its study of heavy-light meson decay constants with three dynamical quarks. Calculations have been extended to a second lattice spacing of about 0.09 fm. At this lattice spacing, there are results in the quenched approximation and for three sets of dynamical quark mass: m_l=m_s; m_l=0.4 m_s and m_l=0.2 m_s, where m_l is the light mass for the u and d quarks and m_s is the strange quark mass. At the coarser lattice spacing, for which results were presented at Lattice 2001, statistics have been increased for two sets of quark masses and three additional sets of quark masses have been studied, giving a total of eight combinations used to interpolate between the quenched and chiral limits. When these calculations are completed, we can study the decay constants taking into account both chiral and continuum extrapolations.Comment: Lattice2002(heavyquark), 3 pages, 3 color figures, to appear in the proceedings of Lattice 200

Pharmacokinetics of a syrup formulation of amoxycillin-potassium clavulanate in children

The pharmacokinetics of a syrup formulation consisting of four parts of amoxycillin and one part of potassium clavulanate (Augmentin) were studied in 11 paediatric patients, 3 to 14 years of age. Single oral doses of 25 mg of Augmentin per kg body weight (20 mg of amoxycillin per kg plus 5 mg of potassium clavulanate per kg, i.e. 1 mg of the syrup per kg) were administered on an empty stomach, and were well accepted and tolerated. Mean peak plasma concentrations 60-90 min after dosing were 7.2 mg/l for amoxycillin and 2-0 mg/l for clavulanic acid. Mean terminal phase plasma half-lifes were 1.4 and 1.0 h, respectively. It is concluded that 25-mg/kg doses of this syrup formulation of Augmentin administered three times daily should be adequate therapy for various childhood bacterial infection

Thermal Phase Transition in Mixed Action SU(3) Lattice Gauge Theory and Wilson Fermion Thermodynamics

We study the thermal phase diagram of pure SU(3) lattice gauge theory with fundamental and adjoint couplings. We improve previous estimates of the position of the bulk transition line and determine the thermal deconfinement transition lines for Nt=2,4,6,N_t=2,4,6, and 8. The endpoint of the bulk transition line (βf,βa)=(4.00(7),2.06(8))(\beta_f, \beta_a)=(4.00(7), 2.06(8)) improves upon earlier estimates obtained using smaller lattice sizes. For Nt>4N_t > 4 the deconfinement transition line splits cleanly away from the bulk transition line. With increasing NtN_t the thermal deconfinement transition lines shift to increasingly weaker coupling, joining onto the bulk transition line at increasingly larger βa\beta_a in a pattern consistent with the usual universality picture of lattice gauge theories. We also discuss the possible consequences of an induced adjoint term from the fermionic determinant and determine this induced term numerically with a microcanonical demon method for two flavors of dynamical Wilson fermions.Comment: 21 pages. Clebsch-Gordan Construction of Lattice Interpolating Fields for Excited Baryons

Large sets of baryon interpolating field operators are developed for use in lattice QCD studies of baryons with zero momentum. Operators are classified according to the double-valued irreducible representations of the octahedral group. At first, three-quark smeared, local operators are constructed for each isospin and strangeness and they are classified according to their symmetry with respect to exchange of Dirac indices. Nonlocal baryon operators are formulated in a second step as direct products of the spinor structures of smeared, local operators together with gauge-covariant lattice displacements of one or more of the smeared quark fields. Linear combinations of direct products of spinorial and spatial irreducible representations are then formed with appropriate Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of the octahedral group. The construction attempts to maintain maximal overlap with the continuum SU(2) group in order to provide a physically interpretable basis. Nonlocal operators provide direct couplings to states that have nonzero orbital angular momentum.Comment: This manuscript provides an anlytical construction of operators and is related to hep-lat/0506029, which provides a computational construction. This e-print version contains a full set of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for the octahedral grou

Contribution of sewage treatment to pollution abatement of urban streams

In this study, we assessed the efficiency and effectiveness of the Vrishabhavathy Valley Treatment plant (VVTP) in Bengaluru city, which is the oldest STP in the city. Since VVTP treats both raw sewage and polluted river water, with the latter constituting 80% of the influent, we sampled water quality at locations upstream and downstream of the plant to evaluate overall efficacy as well
