Paid Peering, Settlement-Free Peering, or Both?
With the rapid growth of congestion-sensitive and data-intensive
applications, traditional settlement-free peering agreements with best-effort
delivery often do not meet the QoS requirements of content providers (CPs).
Meanwhile, Internet access providers (IAPs) feel that revenues from end-users
are not sufficient to recoup the upgrade costs of network infrastructures.
Consequently, some IAPs have begun to offer CPs a new type of peering
agreement, called paid peering, under which they provide CPs with better data
delivery quality for a fee. In this paper, we model a network platform where an
IAP makes decisions on the peering types offered to CPs and the prices charged
to CPs and end-users. We study the optimal peering schemes for the IAP, i.e.,
to offer CPs both the paid and settlement-free peering to choose from or only
one of them, as the objective is profit or welfare maximization. Our results
show that 1) the IAP should always offer the paid and settlement-free peering
under the profit-optimal and welfare-optimal schemes, respectively, 2) whether
to simultaneously offer the other peering type is largely driven by the type of
data traffic, e.g., text or video, and 3) regulators might want to encourage
the IAP to allocate more network capacity to the settlement-free peering for
increasing user welfare
Blind channel identification based on second-order statistics: a frequency-domain approach
In this communication, necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for the unique blind identification of possibly nonminimum phase channels driven by cyclostationary processes. Using a frequency domain formulation, it is first shown that a channel can be identified by the second-order statistics of the observation if and only if the channel transfer function does not have special uniformly spaced zeros. This condition leads to several necessary and sufficient conditions on the observation spectra and the channel impulse response. Based on the frequency-domain formulation, a new identification algorithm is proposed
Electrospinning of poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) nanofibres encapsulated with Ag nanoparticles for skin wound healing

Although significant advances have been made in its treatment, there are several challenges associated with traditional methods, for example, limited donor skin tissue for transplantation and inflammation during long-term healing time. To address these challenges, in this study we present a method to fabricate Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) nanofibres encapsulated with Ag nanoparticle using electrospinning technique. The fibres were fabricated with controlled diameters (59nm-3m) by regulating three main parameters, that is, EVOH solution concentration, the electric voltage, and the distance between the injection needle tip (high-voltage point) and the fibre collector. Ag was added to the nanofibres to offer long-term anti-inflammation effect by slow release of Ag nanoparticles through gradual degradation of EVOH nanofibre. Anthropometric discriminators of type 2 diabetes among White and Black American adults
BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to determine the best anthropometric discriminators of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among White and Black males and females in a large US sample. METHODS: We used Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study baseline data (1987–89) from 15 242 participants (1827 with T2DM) aged 45–65 years. Anthropometric measures included a body shape index (ABSI), body adiposity index (BAI), body mass index, waist circumference (WC), waist:height ratio (WHtR), and waist:hip ratio (WHR). All anthropometric measures were standardized to Z-scores. Using logistic regression, odds ratios for T2DM were adjusted for age, physical activity, and family history of T2DM. The Akaike information criterion and receiver operating characteristic C-statistic were used to select the best-fit models. RESULTS: Body mass index, WC, WHtR, and WHR were comparable discriminators of T2DM among White and Black males, and were superior to ABSI and BAI in predicting T2DM (P < 0.0001). Waist circumference, WHtR, and WHR were the best discriminators among White females, whereas WHR was the best discriminator among Black females. The ABSI was the poorest discriminator of T2DM for all race–gender groups except Black females. Anthropometric values distinguishing T2DM cases from non-cases were lower for Black than White adults. CONCLUSIONS: Anthropometric measures that included WC, either alone or relative to height (WHtR) or hip circumference (WHR), were the strongest discriminators of T2DM across race–gender groups. Body mass index was a comparable discriminator to WC, WHtR, and WHR among males, but not females
Evolution of antiferromagnetic domains in the all-in-all-out ordered pyrochlore NdZrO
We report the observation of magnetic domains in the exotic,
antiferromagnetically ordered all-in-all-out state of NdZrO,
induced by spin canting. The all-in-all-out state can be realized by Ising-like
spins on a pyrochlore lattice and is established in NdZrO below
0.31 K for external magnetic fields up to 0.14 T. Two different spin
arrangements can fulfill this configuration which leads to the possibility of
magnetic domains. The all-in-all-out domain structure can be controlled by an
external magnetic field applied parallel to the [111] direction. This is a
result of different spin canting mechanism for the two all-in-all-out
configurations for such a direction of the magnetic field. The change of the
domain structure is observed through a hysteresis in the magnetic
susceptibility. No hysteresis occurs, however, in case the external magnetic

Resonant reflection at magnetic barriers in quantum wires
The conductance of a quantum wire containing a single magnetic barrier is
studied numerically by means of the recursive Greens function technique. For
sufficiently strong and localized barriers, Fano - type reflection resonances
are observed close to the pinch-off regime. They are attributed to a
magnetoelectric vortex-type quasibound state inside the magnetic barrier that
interferes with an extended mode outside. We furthermore show that disorder can
substantially modify the residual conductance around the pinch-off regime.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
