Spectroscopy of mechanical dissipation in micro-mechanical membranes
We measure the frequency dependence of the mechanical quality factor (Q) of
SiN membrane oscillators and observe a resonant variation of Q by more than two
orders of magnitude. The frequency of the fundamental mechanical mode is tuned
reversibly by up to 40% through local heating with a laser. Several distinct
resonances in Q are observed that can be explained by coupling to membrane
frame modes. Away from the resonances, the background Q is independent of
frequency and temperature in the measured range.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
On the nature of the fast moving star S2 in the Galactic Center
We analyze the properties of the star S2 orbiting the supermassive black hole
at the center of the Galaxy. A high quality SINFONI H and K band spectrum
obtained from coadding 23.5 hours of observation between 2004 and 2007 reveals
that S2 is an early B dwarf (B0-2.5V). Using model atmospheres, we constrain
its stellar and wind properties. We show that S2 is a genuine massive star, and
not the core of a stripped giant star as sometimes speculated to resolve the
problem of star formation so close to the supermassive black hole. We give an
upper limit on its mass loss rate, and show that it is He enriched, possibly

Seizure characterisation using frequency-dependent multivariate dynamics
The characterisation of epileptic seizures assists in the design of targeted pharmaceutical seizure prevention techniques
and pre-surgical evaluations. In this paper, we expand on recent use of multivariate techniques to study the crosscorrelation
dynamics between electroencephalographic (EEG) channels. The Maximum Overlap Discrete Wavelet
Transform (MODWT) is applied in order to separate the EEG channels into their underlying frequencies. The
dynamics of the cross-correlation matrix between channels, at each frequency, are then analysed in terms of the
eigenspectrum. By examination of the eigenspectrum, we show that it is possible to identify frequency dependent
changes in the correlation structure between channels which may be indicative of seizure activity.
The technique is applied to EEG epileptiform data and the results indicate that the correlation dynamics vary over
time and frequency, with larger correlations between channels at high frequencies. Additionally, a redistribution of wavelet energy is found, with increased fractional energy demonstrating the relative importance of high frequencies
during seizures. Dynamical changes also occur in both correlation and energy at lower frequencies during seizures,
suggesting that monitoring frequency dependent correlation structure can characterise changes in EEG signals during
these. Future work will involve the study of other large eigenvalues and inter-frequency correlations to determine
additional seizure characteristics
An extensive spectroscopic time-series of three Wolf-Rayet stars. I. The lifetime of large-scale structures in the wind of WR 134
During the summer of 2013, a 4-month spectroscopic campaign took place to
observe the variabilities in three Wolf-Rayet stars. The spectroscopic data
have been analyzed for WR 134 (WN6b), to better understand its behaviour and
long-term periodicity, which we interpret as arising from corotating
interaction regions (CIRs) in the wind. By analyzing the variability of the He
II 5411 emission line, the previously identified period was refined to
P = 2.255 0.008 (s.d.) days. The coherency time of the variability, which
we associate with the lifetime of the CIRs in the wind, was deduced to be 40
6 days, or 18 cycles, by cross-correlating the variability
patterns as a function of time. When comparing the phased observational
grayscale difference images with theoretical grayscales previously calculated
from models including CIRs in an optically thin stellar wind, we find that two
CIRs were likely present. A separation in longitude of
90 was determined between the two CIRs and we suggest that the
different maximum velocities that they reach indicate that they emerge from
different latitudes. We have also been able to detect observational signatures
of the CIRs in other spectral lines (C IV 5802,5812 and He I
5876). Furthermore, a DAC was found to be present simultaneously with
the CIR signatures detected in the He I 5876 emission line which is
consistent with the proposed geometry of the large-scale structures in the
wind. Small-scale structures also show a presence in the wind, simultaneously

First HARPSpol discoveries of magnetic fields in massive stars
In the framework of the Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) project, a
HARPSpol Large Program at the 3.6m-ESO telescope has recently started to
collect high-resolution spectropolarimetric data of a large number of Southern
massive OB stars in the field of the Galaxy and in many young clusters and
associations. In this Letter, we report on the first discoveries of magnetic
fields in two massive stars with HARPSpol - HD 130807 and HD 122451, and
confirm the presence of a magnetic field at the surface of HD 105382 that was
previously observed with a low spectral resolution device. The longitudinal
magnetic field measurements are strongly varying for HD 130807 from -100
G to 700 G. Those of HD 122451 and HD 105382 are less variable with
values ranging from -40 to -80 G, and from -300 to -600 G,
respectively. The discovery and confirmation of three new magnetic massive
stars, including at least two He-weak stars, is an important contribution to
one of the MiMeS objectives: the understanding of origin of magnetic fields in

Spectroscopic variability of two Oe stars
The Oe stars HD45314 and HD60848 have recently been found to exhibit very
different X-ray properties: whilst HD60848 has an X-ray spectrum and emission
level typical of most OB stars, HD45314 features a much harder and brighter
X-ray emission, making it a so-called gamma Cas analogue. Monitoring the
optical spectra could provide hints towards the origin of these very different
behaviours. We analyse a large set of spectroscopic observations of HD45314 and
HD60848, extending over 20 years. We further attempt to fit the H-alpha line
profiles of both stars with a simple model of emission line formation in a
Keplerian disk. Strong variations in the strengths of the H-alpha, H-beta, and
He I 5876 emission lines are observed for both stars. In the case of HD60848,
we find a time lag between the variations in the equivalent widths of these
lines. The emission lines are double peaked with nearly identical strengths of
the violet and red peaks. The H-alpha profile of this star can be successfully
reproduced by our model of a disk seen under an inclination of 30 degrees. In
the case of HD45314, the emission lines are highly asymmetric and display
strong line profile variations. We find a major change in behaviour between the
2002 outburst and the one observed in 2013. This concerns both the relationship
between the equivalent widths of the various lines and their morphologies at
maximum strength (double-peaked in 2002 versus single-peaked in 2013). Our
simple disk model fails to reproduce the observed H-alpha line profiles of
HD45314. Our results further support the interpretation that Oe stars do have
decretion disks similar to those of Be stars. Whilst the emission lines of
HD60848 are explained by a disk with a Keplerian velocity field, the disk of
HD45314 seems to have a significantly more complex velocity field that could be
related to the phenomenon that produces its peculiar X-ray emission.Comment: Accepted for Publication in A&
Patient and physician satisfaction in an observational study with methyl aminolevulinate daylight-photodynamic therapy in the treatment of multiple actinic keratoses of the face and scalp in 6 European countries
BACKGROUND
Guidelines recommend treating actinic keratoses (AKs) as they are recognized as precursors of invasive squamous cell carcinoma.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this study was to collect real-world clinical data on the use of methyl aminolevulinate daylight photodynamic therapy (MAL DL-PDT) for the treatment of face and scalp AK in Europe.
METHODS
A prospective, multicenter, non-interventional study was conducted in six European countries in patients receiving a single treatment of MAL DL-PDT for face and/or scalp AK. Patient-reported outcomes were assessed by patient questionnaires at baseline and at 3 months after treatment, efficacy was assessed at 3 months using a 6-point global improvement scale, and adverse events (AE) were recorded at each visit.
RESULTS
Overall, 325 patients were enrolled from 52 investigational centres, 314 of whom attended the 3-month visit. Most patients had multiple lesions (58.4% had >10 lesions) with lesions mainly located on the scalp (60.0%) and/or forehead (54.2%). AKs were predominantly grade I (39.4%) or grade II (33.2%), and 10.5% of patients had grade III lesions. The proportions of patients and physicians that were overall satisfied to very satisfied with the MAL DL-PDT treatment were 80.4% and 90.3%, respectively. The vast majority of patients (90.0%) would consider using MAL DL-PDT again if needed. Physician-assessed efficacy at 3 months was at least much improved in 83.5% of patients, with 45.9% of patients requiring no retreatment. Related AEs were reported in 15% of patients.
CONCLUSION
Use of MAL DL-PDT for multiple face and/or scalp AKs resulted in high levels of patient and physician satisfaction in clinical practice in Europe, reflecting the good efficacy and high tolerability of this convenient procedure
