    Regularly arranged indium islands on glass/molybdenum substrates upon femtosecond laser and physical vapor deposition processing

    A bottom-up approach is presented for the production of arrays of indium islands on a molybdenum layer on glass, which can serve as micro-sized precursors for indium compounds such as copper-indium-gallium-diselenide used in photovoltaics. Femtosecond laser ablation of glass and a subsequent deposition of a molybdenumfilm or direct laser processing of the molybdenumfilm both allow the preferential nucleation and growth of indium islands at the predefined locations in a following indium-based physical vapor deposition(PVD) process. A proper choice of laser and deposition parameters ensures the controlled growth of indium islands exclusively at the laser ablated spots. Based on a statistical analysis, these results are compared to the non-structured molybdenumsurface, leading to randomly grown indium islands after PVD

    Growth and shape of indium islands on molybdenum at micro-roughened spots created by femtosecond laser pulses

    Indium islands on molybdenum coated glass can be grown in ordered arrays by surface structuring using a femtosecond laser. The effect of varying the molybdenum coated glass substrate temperature and the indium deposition rate on island areal density, volume and geometry is investigated and evaluated in a physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. The joined impact of growth conditions and spacing of the femtosecond laser structured spots on the arrangement and morphology of indium islands is demonstrated. The results yield a deeper understanding of the island growth and its precise adjustment to industrial requirements, which is indispensable for a technological application of such structures at a high throughput, for instance as precursors for the preparation of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 micro concentrator solar cells

    Electromagnetic Form Factors of the SU(3) Octet Baryons in the semibosonized SU(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Model

    The electromagnetic form factors of the SU(3) octet baryons are investigated in the semibosonized SU(3) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model (chiral quark-soliton model). The rotational 1/Nc1/N_c and strange quark mass corrections in linear order are taken into account. The electromagnetic charge radii of the nucleon and magnetic moments are also evaluated.     A Top Quark Soliton and its Anomalous Chromomagnetic Moment

    We show that under the assumption of dynamical symmetry breaking of electro weak interactions by a top quark condensate, motivated by the Top Mode Standard Model, the top quark in this effective theory can be considered then as chiral color soliton (qualiton). This is realized in an effective four-fermion interaction with chiral SU(3)cSU(3)_c as well as SU(2)LUY(1)SU(2)_L\otimes U_Y(1) symmetry. In the pure top sector the qualiton consists of a top valence quark and a Dirac sea of top and anti-top quark coupled to a color octet of Goldstone pions. The mass spectra, isoscalar quadratic radii and the anomalous chromomagnetic moment due to a non-trivial color form factor are calculated with zero and finite current top masses and effects at the Hadron Colliders are discussed. The anomalous chromomagnetic moment turns out to have a value consistent with the top production rates of the D0- and CDF-measurements.Comment: LaTeX, using RevTeX.sty and aps.sty, without figures, 16 pages, to be published in Physical Review D.     Adverse Fetal and Neonatal Outcomes Associated with a Life-Long High Fat Diet: Role of Altered Development of the Placental Vasculature

    Maternal obesity results in a number of obstetrical and fetal complications with both immediate and long-term consequences. The increased prevalence of obesity has resulted in increasing numbers of women of reproductive age in this high-risk group. Since many of these obese women have been subjected to hypercaloric diets from early childhood we have developed a rodent model of life-long maternal obesity to more clearly understand the mechanisms that contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes in obese women. Female Sprague Dawley rats were fed a control diet (CON - 16% of calories from fat) or high fat diet (HF - 45% of calories from fat) from 3 to 19 weeks of age. Prior to pregnancy HF-fed dams exhibited significant increases in body fat, serum leptin and triglycerides. A subset of dams was sacrificed at gestational day 15 to evaluate fetal and placental development. The remaining animals were allowed to deliver normally. HF-fed dams exhibited a more than 3-fold increase in fetal death and decreased neonatal survival. These outcomes were associated with altered vascular development in the placenta, as well as increased hypoxia in the labyrinth. We propose that the altered placental vasculature may result in reduced oxygenation of the fetal tissues contributing to premature demise and poor neonatal survival

    ATLAS Run 1 searches for direct pair production of third-generation squarks at the Large Hadron Collider

    This paper reviews and extends searches for the direct pair production of the scalar supersymmetric partners of the top and bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS collaboration during the LHC Run 1. Most of the analyses use 20 fb1^{-1} of collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s\sqrt{s} = 8 TeV, although in some case an additional 4.7 fb1^{-1} of collision data at s\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV are used. New analyses are introduced to improve the sensitivity to specific regions of the model parameter space. Since no evidence of third-generation squarks is found, exclusion limits are derived by combining several analyses and are presented in both a simplified model framework, assuming simple decay chains, as well as within the context of more elaborate phenomenological supersymmetric models
