Gravitation with superposed Gauss--Bonnet terms in higher dimensions: Black hole metrics and maximal extensions
Our starting point is an iterative construction suited to combinatorics in
arbitarary dimensions d, of totally anisymmetrised p-Riemann 2p-forms (2p\le d)
generalising the (1-)Riemann curvature 2-forms. Superposition of p-Ricci
scalars obtained from the p-Riemann forms defines the maximally Gauss--Bonnet
extended gravitational Lagrangian. Metrics, spherically symmetric in the (d-1)
space dimensions are constructed for the general case. The problem is directly
reduced to solving polynomial equations. For some black hole type metrics the
horizons are obtained by solving polynomial equations. Corresponding Kruskal
type maximal extensions are obtained explicitly in complete generality, as is
also the periodicity of time for Euclidean signature. We show how to include a
cosmological constant and a point charge. Possible further developments and

SPIDERS: Selection of spectroscopic targets using AGN candidates detected in all-sky X-ray surveys
SPIDERS (SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources) is an SDSS-IV
survey running in parallel to the eBOSS cosmology project. SPIDERS will obtain
optical spectroscopy for large numbers of X-ray-selected AGN and galaxy cluster
members detected in wide area eROSITA, XMM-Newton and ROSAT surveys. We
describe the methods used to choose spectroscopic targets for two
sub-programmes of SPIDERS: X-ray selected AGN candidates detected in the ROSAT
All Sky and the XMM-Newton Slew surveys. We have exploited a Bayesian
cross-matching algorithm, guided by priors based on mid-IR colour-magnitude
information from the WISE survey, to select the most probable optical
counterpart to each X-ray detection. We empirically demonstrate the high
fidelity of our counterpart selection method using a reference sample of bright
well-localised X-ray sources collated from XMM-Newton, Chandra and Swift-XRT
serendipitous catalogues, and also by examining blank-sky locations. We
describe the down-selection steps which resulted in the final set of
SPIDERS-AGN targets put forward for spectroscopy within the eBOSS/TDSS/SPIDERS
survey, and present catalogues of these targets. We also present catalogues of
~12000 ROSAT and ~1500 XMM-Newton Slew survey sources which have existing
optical spectroscopy from SDSS-DR12, including the results of our visual
inspections. On completion of the SPIDERS program, we expect to have collected
homogeneous spectroscopic redshift information over a footprint of ~7500
deg for >85 percent of the ROSAT and XMM-Newton Slew survey sources having
optical counterparts in the magnitude range 17<r<22.5, producing a large and
highly complete sample of bright X-ray-selected AGN suitable for statistical
studies of AGN evolution and clustering.Comment: MNRAS, accepte
Insights into enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli diversity in Bangladesh utilizing genomic epidemiology
Does a SLAP lesion affect shoulder muscle recruitment as measured by EMG activity during a rugby tackle?
Background: The study objective was to assess the influence of a SLAP lesion on onset of EMG activity in shoulder muscles during a front on rugby football tackle within professional rugby players.
Methods: Mixed cross-sectional study evaluating between and within group differences in EMG onset times. Testing was carried out within the physiotherapy department of a university sports medicine clinic. The test group consisted of 7 players with clinically diagnosed SLAP lesions, later verified on arthroscopy. The reference group consisted of 15 uninjured and full time professional rugby players from within the same playing squad. Controlled tackles were performed against a tackle dummy. Onset of EMG activity was assessed from surface EMG of Pectorialis Major, Biceps Brachii, Latissimus Dorsi, Serratus Anterior and Infraspinatus muscles relative to time of impact. Analysis of differences in activation timing between muscles and limbs (injured versus non-injured side and non injured side versus matched reference group).
Results: Serratus Anterior was activated prior to all other muscles in all (P = 0.001-0.03) subjects. In the SLAP
injured shoulder Biceps was activated later than in the non-injured side. Onset times of all muscles of the noninjured shoulder in the injured player were consistently earlier compared with the reference group. Whereas, within
the injured shoulder, all muscle activation timings were later than in the reference group.
Conclusions: This study shows that in shoulders with a SLAP lesion there is a trend towards delay in activation time of Biceps and other muscles with the exception of an associated earlier onset of activation of Serratus anterior, possibly due to a coping strategy to protect glenohumeral stability and thoraco-scapular stability. This
trend was not statistically significant in all cases
Sex-biased parental care and sexual size dimorphism in a provisioning arthropod
The diverse selection pressures driving the evolution of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) have long been debated. While the balance between fecundity selection and sexual selection has received much attention, explanations based on sex-specific ecology have proven harder to test. In ectotherms, females are typically larger than males, and this is frequently thought to be because size constrains female fecundity more than it constrains male mating success. However, SSD could additionally reflect maternal care strategies. Under this hypothesis, females are relatively larger where reproduction requires greater maximum maternal effort – for example where mothers transport heavy provisions to nests.
To test this hypothesis we focussed on digger wasps (Hymenoptera: Ammophilini), a relatively homogeneous group in which only females provision offspring. In some species, a single large prey item, up to 10 times the mother’s weight, must be carried to each burrow on foot; other species provide many small prey, each flown individually to the nest.
We found more pronounced female-biased SSD in species where females carry single, heavy prey. More generally, SSD was negatively correlated with numbers of prey provided per offspring. Females provisioning multiple small items had longer wings and thoraxes, probably because smaller prey are carried in flight.
Despite much theorising, few empirical studies have tested how sex-biased parental care can affect SSD. Our study reveals that such costs can be associated with the evolution of dimorphism, and this should be investigated in other clades where parental care costs differ between sexes and species
Looking into the hearts of Bok globules: MM and submm continuum images of isolated star-forming cores
We present the results of a comprehensive infrared, submillimetre, and
millimetre continuum emission study of isolated low-mass star-forming cores in
32 Bok globules, with the aim to investigate the process of star formation in
these regions. The submillimetre and millimetre dust continuum emission maps
together with the spectral energy distributions are used to model and derive
the physical properties of the star-forming cores, such as luminosities, sizes,
masses, densities, etc. Comparisons with ground-based near-infrared and
space-based mid and far-infrared images from Spitzer are used to reveal the
stellar content of the Bok globules, association of embedded young stellar
objects with the submm dust cores, and the evolutionary stages of the
individual sources. Submm dust continuum emission was detected in 26 out of the
32 globule cores observed. For 18 globules with detected (sub)mm cores we
derive evolutionary stages and physical parameters of the embedded sources. We
identify nine starless cores, most of which are presumably prestellar, nine
Class 0 protostars, and twelve Class I YSOs. Specific source properties like
bolometric temperature, core size, and central densities are discussed as
function of evolutionary stage. We find that at least two thirds (16 out of 24)
of the star-forming globules studied here show evidence of forming multiple
stars on scales between 1,000 and 50,000 AU. However, we also find that most of
these small prototstar and star groups are comprised of sources with different
evolutionary stages, suggesting a picture of slow and sequential star formation

Tracing the evolutionary stage of Bok globules: CCS and NH3
We pursue the investigation of a previously proposed correlation between
chemical properties and physical evolutionary stage of isolated low-mass
star-forming regions. In the past, the NH3/CCS abundance ratio was suggested to
be a potentially useful indicator for the evolutionary stage of cloud cores. We
aim to study its applicability for isolated Bok globules. A sample of 42 Bok
globules with and without signs of current star formation was searched for
CCS(2-1) emission, the observations were complemented with NH3 measurements
available in the literature and own observations. The abundance ratio of both
molecules is discussed with respect to the evolutionary stage of the objects
and in the context of chemical models. The NH3/CCS ratio could be assessed for
18 Bok globules and is found to be moderately high and roughly similar across
all evolutionary stages from starless and prestellar cores towards internally
heated cores harbouring protostars of Class 0, Class I or later. Bok globules
with extremely high CCS abundance analogous to carbon-chain producing regions
in dark cloud cores are not found. The observed range of NH3/CCS hints towards

Spin injection and spin accumulation in all-metal mesoscopic spin valves
We study the electrical injection and detection of spin accumulation in
lateral ferromagnetic metal-nonmagnetic metal-ferromagnetic metal (F/N/F) spin
valve devices with transparent interfaces. Different ferromagnetic metals,
permalloy (Py), cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni), are used as electrical spin
injectors and detectors. For the nonmagnetic metal both aluminium (Al) and
copper (Cu) are used. Our multi-terminal geometry allows us to experimentally
separate the spin valve effect from other magneto resistance signals such as
the anomalous magneto resistance (AMR) and Hall effects. We find that the AMR
contribution of the ferromagnetic contacts can dominate the amplitude of the
spin valve effect, making it impossible to observe the spin valve effect in a
'conventional' measurement geometry. In a 'non local' spin valve measurement we
are able to completely isolate the spin valve signal and observe clear spin
accumulation signals at T=4.2 K as well as at room temperature (RT). For
aluminum we obtain spin relaxation lengths (lambda_{sf}) of 1.2 mu m and 600 nm
at T=4.2 K and RT respectively, whereas for copper we obtain 1.0 mu m and 350
nm. The spin relaxation times tau_{sf} in Al and Cu are compared with theory
and results obtained from giant magneto resistance (GMR), conduction electron
spin resonance (CESR), anti-weak localization and superconducting tunneling
experiments. The spin valve signals generated by the Py electrodes (alpha_F
lambda_F=0.5 [1.2] nm at RT [T=4.2 K]) are larger than the Co electrodes
(alpha_F lambda_F=0.3 [0.7] nm at RT [T=4.2 K]), whereas for Ni (alpha_F
lambda_F<0.3 nm at RT and T=4.2 K) no spin signal is observed. These values are

A framework to capture and share knowledge using storytelling and video sharing in global product development
In global engineering enterprises, information and knowledge sharing are critical factors that can determine a project's success. This statement is widely acknowledged in published literature. However, according to some academics, tacit knowledge is derived from a person’s lifetime of experience, practice, perception and learning, which makes it hard to capture and document in order to be shared. This project investigates if social media tools can be used to improve and enable tacit knowledge sharing within a global engineering enterprise. This paper first provides a brief background of the subject area, followed by an explanation of the industrial investigation, from which the proposed knowledge framework to improve tacit knowledge sharing is presented. This project’s main focus is on the improvement of collaboration and knowledge sharing amongst product development engineers in order to improve the whole product development cycle
Prenatal hypoxia induces increased cardiac contractility on a background of decreased capillary density.
Background: Chronic hypoxia in utero (CHU) is one of the most common insults to fetal development and may be associated with poor cardiac recovery from ischaemia-reperfusion injury,yet the effects on normal cardiac mechanical performance are poorly understood.
Methods: Pregnant female wistar rats were exposed to hypoxia (12% oxygen, balance nitrogen)for days 10–20 of pregnancy. Pups were born into normal room air and weaned normally. At 10 weeks of age, hearts were excised under anaesthesia and underwent retrograde 'Langendorff' perfusion. Mechanical performance was measured at constant filling pressure (100 cm H2O) with intraventricular balloon. Left ventricular free wall was dissected away and capillary density estimated following alkaline phosphatase staining. Expression of SERCA2a and Nitric Oxide Synthases (NOS) proteins were estimated by immunoblotting.
Results: CHU significantly increased body mass (P < 0.001) compared with age-matched control rats but was without effect on relative cardiac mass. For incremental increases in left ventricular balloon volume, diastolic pressure was preserved. However, systolic pressure was significantly greater following CHU for balloon volume = 50 μl (P < 0.01) and up to 200 μl (P < 0.05). For higher balloon volumes systolic pressure was not significantly different from control. Developed pressures were correspondingly increased relative to controls for balloon volumes up to 250 μl (P < 0.05).Left ventricular free wall capillary density was significantly decreased in both epicardium (18%; P <0.05) and endocardium (11%; P < 0.05) despite preserved coronary flow. Western blot analysis revealed no change to the expression of SERCA2a or nNOS but immuno-detectable eNOS protein was significantly decreased (P < 0.001) in cardiac tissue following chronic hypoxia in utero.
Conclusion: These data offer potential mechanisms for poor recovery following ischaemia, including decreased coronary flow reserve and impaired angiogenesis with subsequent detrimental effects of post-natal cardiac performance
