Learning how much about gases using MBL? A case study from a chemistry classroom
Chemistry learning with understanding is a challenge. From a social constructivist position we view students ‘chemistry learning from experiments as involving the shared negotiation of meaning that uses experimental data to confirm or challenge their existing scientific theories. This study investigated teaching and learning practices related to the use of MBL in a high school chemistry laboratory where students were studying gases and kinetic theory. Given the widely accepted view that the use of such technology is a ‘cure-all’ for educational problems, the learning of students as a consequence of their use of this technology might be considered disappointing. We find that little or no higher order thinking was employed as students engaged in using the MBL and that some alternative conceptions remained unchallenged through its use. It is necessary to consider the positioning of the computer in the group and experimental context if the promise of the use of such technology is to be fulfilled.published_or_final_versio
Behavioural responses of reptile predators to invasive cane toads in tropical Australia
The ecological impact of an invasive species can depend on the behavioural responses of native fauna to the invader. For example, the greatest risk posed by invasive cane toads (Rhinella marinaBufonidae) in tropical Australia is lethal poisoning of predators that attempt to eat a toad; and thus, a predator's response to a toad determines its vulnerability. We conducted standardized laboratory trials on recently captured (toad-naïve) predatory snakes and lizards, in advance of the toad invasion front as it progressed through tropical Australia. Responses to a live edible-sized toad differed strongly among squamate species. We recorded attacks (and hence, predator mortality) in scincid, agamid and varanid lizards, and in elapid, colubrid and pythonid snakes. Larger-bodied predators were at greater risk, and some groups (elapid snakes and varanid lizards) were especially vulnerable. However, feeding responses differed among species within families and within genera. Some taxa (notably, many scincid and agamid lizards) do not attack toads; and many colubrid snakes either do not consume toads, or are physiologically resistant to the toad's toxins. Intraspecific variation in responses means that even in taxa that apparently are unaffected by toad invasion at the population level, some individual predators nonetheless may be fatally poisoned by invasive cane toads. © 2013 Ecological Society of Australia
Two-Loop Soft Corrections and Resummation of the Thrust Distribution in the Dijet Region
The thrust distribution in electron-positron annihilation is a classical
precision QCD observable. Using renormalization group (RG) evolution in Laplace
space, we perform the resummation of logarithmically enhanced corrections in
the dijet limit, to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL)
accuracy. We independently derive the two-loop soft function for the thrust
distribution and extract an analytical expression for the NNLL resummation
coefficient . To combine the resummed expressions with the fixed-order
results, we derive the -matching and -matching of the NNLL

Eccrine porocarcinoma of the head: An important differential diagnosis in the elderly patient
Background: Eccrine porocarcinoma is a rare malignant tumor of the sweat gland, characterized by a broad spectrum of clinicopathologic presentations. Surprisingly, unlike its benign counterpart eccrine poroma, eccrine porocarcinoma is seldom found in areas with a high density of eccrine sweat glands, like the palms or soles. Instead, eccrine porocarcinoma frequently occurs on the lower extremities, trunk and abdomen, but also on the head, resembling various other skin tumors, as illustrated in the patients described herein. Observations: We report 5 cases of eccrine porocarcinoma of the head. All patients were initially diagnosed as having epidermal or melanocytic skin tumors. Only after histopathologic examination were they classified as eccrine porocarcinoma, showing features of epithelial tumors with abortive ductal differentiation. Characteristic clinical, histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings of eccrine porocarcinomas are illustrated. Conclusion: Eccrine porocarcinomas are potentially fatal adnexal malignancies, in which extensive metastatic dissemination may occur. Porocarcinomas are commonly overlooked, or misinterpreted as squamous or basal cell carcinomas as well as other common malignant and even benign skin tumors. Knowledge of the clinical pattern and histologic findings, therefore, is crucial for an early therapeutic intervention, which can reduce the risk of tumor recurrence and serious complications. Changes in and predictors of length of stay in hospital after surgery for breast cancer between 1997/98 and 2004/05 in two regions of England: a population-based
BACKGROUND
Decreases in length of stay (LOS) in hospital after breast cancer surgery can be partly attributed to the change to less radical surgery, but many other factors are operating at the patient, surgeon and hospital levels. This study aimed to describe the changes in and predictors of length of stay (LOS) in hospital after surgery for breast cancer between 1997/98 and 2004/05 in two regions of England.
METHODS
Cases of female invasive breast cancer diagnosed in two English cancer registry regions were linked to Hospital Episode Statistics data for the period 1st April 1997 to 31st March 2005. A subset of records where women underwent mastectomy or breast conserving surgery (BCS) was extracted (n = 44,877). Variations in LOS over the study period were investigated. A multilevel model with patients clustered within surgical teams and NHS Trusts was used to examine associations between LOS and a range of factors.
RESULTS
Over the study period the proportion of women having a mastectomy reduced from 58% to 52%. The proportion varied from 14% to 80% according to NHS Trust. LOS decreased by 21% from 1997/98 to 2004/05 (LOSratio = 0.79, 95%CI 0.77-0.80). BCS was associated with 33% shorter hospital stays compared to mastectomy (LOSratio = 0.67, 95%CI 0.66-0.68). Older age, advanced disease, presence of comorbidities, lymph node excision and reconstructive surgery were associated with increased LOS. Significant variation remained amongst Trusts and surgical teams.
CONCLUSION
The number of days spent in hospital after breast cancer surgery has continued to decline for several decades. The change from mastectomy to BCS accounts for only 9% of the overall decrease in LOS. Other explanations include the adoption of new techniques and practices, such as sentinel lymph node biopsy and early discharge. This study has identified wide variation in practice with substantial cost implications for the NHS. Further work is required to explain this variation
Collaborative Gaze Channelling for Improved Cooperation During Robotic Assisted Surgery
The use of multiple robots for performing complex tasks is becoming a common practice for many robot applications. When different operators are involved, effective cooperation with anticipated manoeuvres is important for seamless, synergistic control of all the end-effectors. In this paper, the concept of Collaborative Gaze Channelling (CGC) is presented for improved control of surgical robots for a shared task. Through eye tracking, the fixations of each operator are monitored and presented in a shared surgical workspace. CGC permits remote or physically separated collaborators to share their intention by visualising the eye gaze of their counterparts, and thus recovers, to a certain extent, the information of mutual intent that we rely upon in a vis-à-vis working setting. In this study, the efficiency of surgical manipulation with and without CGC for controlling a pair of bimanual surgical robots is evaluated by analysing the level of coordination of two independent operators. Fitts' law is used to compare the quality of movement with or without CGC. A total of 40 subjects have been recruited for this study and the results show that the proposed CGC framework exhibits significant improvement (p<0.05) on all the motion indices used for quality assessment. This study demonstrates that visual guidance is an implicit yet effective way of communication during collaborative tasks for robotic surgery. Factorization and NNLL Resummation for Higgs Production with a Jet Veto
Using methods of effective field theory, we derive the first all-order
factorization theorem for the Higgs-boson production cross section with a jet
veto, imposed by means of a standard sequential recombination jet algorithm.
Like in the case of small-q_T resummation in Drell-Yan and Higgs production,
the factorization is affected by a collinear anomaly. Our analysis provides the
basis for a systematic resummation of large logarithms log(m_H/p_T^veto) beyond
leading-logarithmic order. Specifically, we present predictions for the
resummed jet-veto cross section and efficiency at next-to-next-to-leading
logarithmic order. Our results have important implications for Higgs-boson
searches at the LHC, where a jet veto is required to suppress background

Temperature-dependent Raman linewidths in transition-metal dichalcogenides

The final version is available from American Physical Society via the DOI in this recordUsing a semi-ab-initio theoretical method we examine the temperature-dependent linewidth of the Raman modes in bulk and monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) MoS2, WS2, and MoTe2. It is found that different Raman modes show different linewidths and different temperature dependencies with respect to each other for a given sample and across different TMDs. We explain these characteristics as arising from a combination of phonon density of states, Raman mode frequency, and the relative contributions of temperature-independent mass-defect scattering and temperature-dependent intrinsic anharmonic interactions. Reported measurements for samples prepared under experimental conditions have been explained by adding frequency-dependent inhomogeneity-related background contribution to our theoretical results for the pure and homogeneous samples.This work has been possible with funds from the Leverhulme Trust (UK) through Grant No. RPG-2016-186, which provided financial support to I.O.T. and purchase of computer nodes for carrying out numerical calculations.
