Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis
A 6-week old baby was brought to A&E by her parents, after a 3 week history of frequent vomiting, not tolerating feeds, and weight loss. She was well for the first 3 weeks of life, before she stopped tolerating any feeds. Despite several changes with the feeds given, the baby’s symptoms did not improve. Moreover, she started losing weight, while she became increasingly irritable and inconsolable. Her consultant paediatrician decided to admit her for a trial of other formula feeds, and further investigations. In hospital, examination was unremarkable, except for an intermittently palpable mass in the RUQ. An ultrasound of the abdomen confirmed the diagnosis of pyloric stenosis. She was kept nil by mouth, an NG tube inserted for drainage, and intravenous fluids administered, with close monitoring of fluid input and output. Pyloromyotomy was performed and the patient was discharged after ensuring that she was tolerating feeds.peer-reviewe
Outline of the 2005 European Resuscitation Council Guidelines
Resuscitation guidelines are revised and updated about
every 5 years and this happens because resuscitation science
continues to advance and clinical guidelines must be updated
regularly to reflect these developments and advise healthcare
providers on best practice.
To date, the 2000 resuscitation guidelines are followed in
Malta and other countries worldwide. These guidelines have
been now revised by the International Liaison Committee on
Resuscitation (ILCOR) and a consensus has been reached
resulting in the publication of the 2005 guidelines. The ILCOR
was formed in 1993 and its mission is to identify and review
international science and knowledge relevant to CPR, and to
offer consensus on treatment recommendations. A total of 281
experts completed 403 worksheets on 276 topics. Three hundred
and eighty specialists from 18 countries attended the 2005
International Consensus Conference on Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) Science, which took place in Dallas in
January 2005. Science statements and treatment
recommendations were agreed by the conference participants
and the results are now the new 2005 Resuscitation Guidelines.
These ILCOR guidelines will be published internationally on
the 28 th November 2005 for the first time. The Malta
Resuscitation Council (MRC) participated in meetings of the
European Resuscitation Council (ERC) where the dissemination
of these new guidelines was discussed. This article will try to
summarize the major changes incorporated in the new
guidelines.peer-reviewe
A survey of fungal diseases associated with Vitis vinifera L. in the Maltese Islands
A survey was carried out between July and September 2000 in l'Ovineyards, (8 in Malta and 2 in Goro) to investigate which fungal diseases were present. Samples, which included leaves, berries and stems infected by the fungi, came from both traditional and modem vineyard cultivation. Pathogenic fungi identified included 26 different fungi belonging to 21 genera; 21 taxa were reported on Vitis vinifera L. for the . first time in the Maltese Islands. It was observed that the intensity of diseases was much more pronounced in the traditional rather than in the modem method of vine-training.peer-reviewe
