Brillouin light scattering studies of planar metallic magnonic crystals
The application of Brillouin light scattering to the study of the spin-wave
spectrum of one- and two-dimensional planar magnonic crystals consisting of
arrays of interacting stripes, dots and antidots is reviewed. It is shown that
the discrete set of allowed frequencies of an isolated nanoelement becomes a
finite-width frequency band for an array of identical interacting elements. It
is possible to tune the permitted and forbidden frequency bands, modifying the
geometrical or the material magnetic parameters, as well as the external
magnetic field. From a technological point of view, the accurate fabrication of
planar magnonic crystals and a proper understanding of their magnetic
excitation spectrum in the GHz range is oriented to the design of filters and
waveguides for microwave communication systems
Syrian Refugees and the Digital Passage to Europe: Smartphone Infrastructures and Affordances
This research examines the role of smartphones in refugees’ journeys. It traces the risks and possibilities afforded by smartphones for facilitating information, communication, and migration flows in the digital passage to Europe. For the Syrian and Iraqi refugee respondents in this France-based qualitative study, smartphones are lifelines, as important as water and food. They afford the planning, navigation, and documentation of journeys, enabling regular contact with family, friends, smugglers, and those who help them. However, refugees are simultaneously exposed to new forms of exploitation and surveillance with smartphones as migrations are financialised by smugglers and criminalized by European policies, and the digital passage is dependent on a contingent range of sociotechnical and material assemblages. Through an infrastructural lens, we capture the dialectical dynamics of opportunity and vulnerability, and the forms of resilience and solidarity, that arise as forced migration and digital connectivity coincide
Simultaneous existence of two spin-wave modes in ultrathin Fe/GaAs(001) films studied by Brillouin Light Scattering: experiment and theory
A double-peaked structure was observed in the {\it in-situ} Brillouin Light
Scattering (BLS) spectra of a 6 \AA thick epitaxial Fe/GaAs(001) film for
values of an external magnetic field , applied along the hard in plane
direction, lower than a critical value kOe. This experimental
finding is theoretically interpreted in terms of a model which assumes a
non-homogeneous magnetic ground state characterized by the presence of
perperpendicular up/down stripe domains. For such a ground state, two spin-wave
modes, namely an acoustic and an optic mode, can exist. Upon increasing the
field the magnetization tilts in the film plane, and for the
ground state is homogeneous, thus allowing the existence of just a single
spin-wave mode. The frequencies of the two spin-wave modes were calculated and
successfully compared with the experimental data. The field dependence of the
intensities of the corresponding two peaks that are present in the BLS spectra
was also estimated, providing further support to the above-mentioned

Noncommutative Differential Forms on the kappa-deformed Space
We construct a differential algebra of forms on the kappa-deformed space. For
a given realization of the noncommutative coordinates as formal power series in
the Weyl algebra we find an infinite family of one-forms and nilpotent exterior
derivatives. We derive explicit expressions for the exterior derivative and
one-forms in covariant and noncovariant realizations. We also introduce
higher-order forms and show that the exterior derivative satisfies the graded
Leibniz rule. The differential forms are generally not graded-commutative, but
they satisfy the graded Jacobi identity. We also consider the star-product of
classical differential forms. The star-product is well-defined if the
commutator between the noncommutative coordinates and one-forms is closed in
the space of one-forms alone. In addition, we show that in certain realizations
the exterior derivative acting on the star-product satisfies the undeformed

Walking and the social life of solar charging in rural Africa
We consider practices that sustain social and physical environments beyond those dominating sustainable HCI discourse. We describe links between walking, sociality, and using resources in a case study of community-based, solar, cellphone charging in villages in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Like 360 million rural Africans, inhabitants of these villages are poor and, like 25% and 92% of the world, respectively, do not have domestic electricity or own motor vehicles. We describe nine practices in using the charging stations we deployed. We recorded 700 people using the stations, over a year, some regularly. We suggest that the way we frame practices limits insights about them, and consider various routines in using and sharing local resources to discover relations that might also feature in charging. Specifically, walking interconnects routines in using, storing, sharing and sustaining resources, and contributes to knowing, feeling, wanting and avoiding as well as to different aspects of sociality, social order and perspectives on sustainability. Along the way, bodies acquire literacies that make certain relationalities legible. Our study shows we cannot assert what sustainable practice means a priori and, further, that detaching practices from bodies and their paths limits solutions, at least in rural Africa. Flavor in Minimal Conformal Technicolor
We construct a complete, realistic, and natural UV completion of minimal
conformal technicolor that explains the origin of quark and lepton masses and
mixing angles. As in "bosonic technicolor", we embed conformal technicolor in a
supersymmetric theory, with supersymmetry broken at a high scale. The exchange
of heavy scalar doublets generates higher-dimension interactions between
technifermions and quarks and leptons that give rise to quark and lepton masses
at the TeV scale. Obtaining a sufficiently large top quark mass requires strong
dynamics at the supersymmetry breaking scale in both the top and technicolor
sectors. This is natural if the theory above the supersymmetry breaking also
has strong conformal dynamics. We present two models in which the strong top
dynamics is realized in different ways. In both models, constraints from
flavor-changing effects can be easily satisfied. The effective theory below the
supersymmetry breaking scale is minimal conformal technicolor with an
additional light technicolor gaugino. We argue that this light gaugino is a
general consequence of conformal technicolor embedded into a supersymmetric
theory. If the gaugino has mass below the TeV scale it will give rise to an
additional pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson that is observable at the LHC.Comment: 37 pages; references adde
Minimal Conformal Technicolor and Precision Electroweak Tests
We study the minimal model of conformal technicolor, an SU(2) gauge theory
near a strongly coupled conformal fixed point, with conformal symmetry softly
broken by technifermion mass terms. Conformal symmetry breaking triggers chiral
symmetry breaking in the pattern SU(4) -> Sp(4), which gives rise to a
pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson that can act as a composite Higgs boson. The top
quark is elementary, and the top and electroweak gauge loop contributions to
the Higgs mass are cut off entirely by Higgs compositeness. In particular, the
model requires no top partners and no "little Higgs" mechanism. A nontrivial
vacuum alignment results from the interplay of the top loop and technifermion
mass terms. The composite Higgs mass is completely determined by the top loop,
in the sense that m_h/m_t is independent of the vacuum alignment and is
computable by a strong-coupling calculation. There is an additional composite
pseudoscalar A with mass larger than m_h and suppressed direct production at
LHC. We discuss the electroweak fit in this model in detail. Corrections to Z
-> bb and the T parameter from the top sector are suppressed by the enhanced
Sp(4) custodial symmetry. Even assuming that the strong contribution to the S
parameter is positive and usuppressed, a good electroweak fit can be obtained
for v/f ~ 0.25, where v and f are the electroweak and chiral symmetry breaking

El trabajo se refiere a las pruebas comparativas efectuadas con el 3er. Prototipo experimental presentado en un anterior trabajo, V. Tacchi, A. Monrós (2004), y siempre con el 3er. prototipo, a las pruebas de eficiencia preliminares, efectuadas en el “Laboratorio de Certificaciones de Colectores y Sistemas Solares del C.R. ENEA (Trisaia 22/05/06), y de la experiencia acumulada en Córdoba con el 4to. Prototipo durante el año 2005. Se expone también sobre una variante prevista en el texto de la patente, que permite usar materiales de menor costo, y contemporáneamente hacer frente a posibles problemas de corrosión metalúrgica o de congelamiento (climas muy rígidos). Por otro lado se comentan las razones que justifican el elevado rendimiento encontrado en el nuevo sistema, y se hace referencia brevemente, al sistema de comando electrónico de la puerta de la cual está provisto, enunciando además algunas características útiles, para un buen rendimiento de los sistemas para calentamiento de agua domiciliaria.The paper reports comparative tests carried out with the third experimental prototype of a Solar Water Heater and Boiler, as presented in a former paper, (V. Tacchi, A. Monrós 2004), as well as preliminary efficiency tests of the same third prototype in the C.R. ENEA in Trisaia, Italy (2006). Tests of the fourth prototype in Córdoba (Argentina) during 2005 are also reported. It includes comments on alternatives covered by the granted patent, which allow the use of cheaper materials, as well as overcoming corrosion or icing problems (in very severe climates).
