    EAST: Energy Efficient Adaptive Scheme for Transmission in Wireless Sensor Networks

    In this paper, we propose Energy-efficient Adaptive Scheme for Transmission (EAST) in WSNs. EAST is IEEE 802.15.4 standard compliant. In this approach, open-loop is used for temperature-aware link quality estimation and compensation. Whereas, closed-loop feedback helps to divide network into three logical regions to minimize overhead of control packets on basis of Threshold transmitter power loss (RSSIloss) for each region and current number of neighbor nodes that help to adapt transmit power according to link quality changes due to temperature variation. Simulation results show that propose scheme; EAST effectively adapts transmission power to changing link quality with less control packets overhead and energy consumption compared to classical approach with single region in which maximum transmitter power assigned to compensate temperature variation

    Reinforcing teacher’s role in retaining students’ interests discussing online in their learning process at Malaysian tertiary institutions

    Many studies from the literature related to asynchronous online discussions among tertiary students provide various advantages such as allowing students’ flexibility to provide feedbacks [38], enabling their knowledge construction [30], developing their critical thinking [39], and interacting with the lecturers regardless of time and space [1]. Thus, the use of online discussion has further become predominant to support tertiary education. Likewise in Malaysian context, research related to online discussion has demonstrated increased confidence in students’ learning. Although the findings showed positive response, there are studies [20], [3], [29], [24] proved otherwise mainly because of the teachers’ weaknesses in keeping students’ interests and motivation to use online discussions in their learning process. Based on Ames’ [4] teaching strategies and Keller’s [21] ARCS model, a systematic guidance was developed for teachers to properly help students discussing online in completing their assignments. With reference to this systematic guidance, a qualitative case study on how to retain the students’ motivation using online discussion was conducted. The respondents were final year students working in small groups. Each respondent was made compulsory to answer a checklist based on the items from Khan [22] that was used to gauge their background skills in using online forum before conducting the study. The research instruments used were online discussions and interviews. The transcripts from the online discussions were analysed using a coding scheme developed from the systematic guidance (developed from Ames’ [21] teaching strategies and Keller’s [21] ARCS model while the data from the interviews with the group leaders were used to support the findings derived from the transcript analysis. The findings revealed that the teaching strategies used in this study were able to retain the students’ interest and motivation to continue discussing online in completing their project assignments

    Penelitian ini berjudul Peningkatan Kemampuan Siswa Membaca Nyaring Melalui Teknik Modeling di Kelas III SD Terpencil Gondalon. Dengan uraian permasalahan yaitu apakah dengan menggunakan tehnik modeling dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa kelas III membaca nyaring melalui teknik modeling. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam membaca nyaring melalui teknik modeling. Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK), yang dilaksanakan 2 siklus yang terdiri atas perencanaan, pelaksanaan tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi. Data yang diambil adalah data kualitatif yaitu data hasil observasi diperoleh dari hasil pengamatan situasi pembelajaran. Serta data kuantitatif yaitu data hasil belajar diperoleh dari hasil tes. Hasil penelitian siklus I diperoleh tuntas individu 4 orang dan tidak tuntas individu 6 orang dengan persentase daya serap klasikal 58% dan ketuntasan belajar klasikal 40%. Hasil belajar siklus II seluruh siswa dinyatakan tuntas yaitu 100% dengan persentase daya serap klasikal 87,6%. Dengan demikian dapat dikatakan bahwa penggunaan teknik modeling dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa membaca nyaring siswa kelas III SD Terpencil Gondalon

    Chandra Reveals Heavy Obscuration and Circumnuclear Star Formation in Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 4968

    We present the Chandra imaging and spectral analysis of NGC 4968, a nearby (z = 0.00986) Seyfert 2 galaxy. We discover extended (\sim1 kpc) X-ray emission in the soft band (0.5 - 2 keV) that is neither coincident with the narrow line region nor the extended radio emission. Based on spectral modeling, it is linked to on-going star formation (\sim2.6-4 M_{\sun} yr1^{-1}). The soft emission at circumnuclear scales (inner \sim400 pc) originates from hot gas, with kT \sim 0.7 keV, while the most extended thermal emission is cooler (kT \sim 0.3 keV). We refine previous measurements of the extreme Fe Kα\alpha equivalent width in this source (EW = 2.51.0+2.6^{+2.6}_{-1.0} keV), which suggests the central engine is completely embedded within Compton-thick levels of obscuration. Using physically motivated models fit to the Chandra spectrum, we derive a Compton-thick column density (NH>1.25×1024N_{\rm H} > 1.25\times10^{24} cm2^{-2}) and an intrinsic hard (2-10 keV) X-ray luminosity of \sim3-8×1042\times 10^{42} erg s1^{-1} (depending on the presumed geometry of the obscurer), which is over two orders of magnitude larger than that observed. The large Fe Kα\alpha EW suggests a spherical covering geometry, which could be confirmed with X-ray measurements above 10 keV. NGC 4968 is similar to other active galaxies that exhibit extreme Fe Kα\alpha EWs (i.e., >>2 keV) in that they also contain ongoing star formation. This work supports the idea that gas associated with nuclear star formation may increase the covering factor of the enshrouding gas and play a role in obscuring AGN.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables. This research meant to describe whether using card number media could be step on student activity learn of Mathematics Learning in third grade Elementary School number 18 West Pontianak. The method used is descriptive method. Procedure of class action research have four step that is Planning, Action, Observation and Reflection. The data collecting technique is direct observation and data collection tool was observation sheet. The research do by two cycle. One cycle have two meeting. The first cycle reach for average score of 66%. The second cycle reach for average score 88%. Thats proving an increase of 22%. Can be deduced by using the card number media increase the activity of third grade Elementary School number 18 West Pontianak

    Privacy preserving encrypted phonetic search of speech data

    This paper presents a strategy for enabling speech recognition to be performed in the cloud whilst preserving the privacy of users. The approach advocates a demarcation of responsibilities between the client and server-side components for performing the speech recognition task. On the client-side resides the acoustic model, which symbolically encodes the audio and encrypts the data before uploading to the server. The server-side then employs searchable encryption to enable the phonetic search of the speech content. Some preliminary results for speech encoding and searchable encryption are presented
