A Cross-Cultural Comparison of Perceptions Regarding Human Trafficking

This study surveyed 135 individuals, of which 68 were native speakers of English and 67 were native speakers of Thai. Respondents answered questions on issues related to human trafficking, its causes, and potential solutions. Statistical tests showed significant variance in opinions between language and other groups regarding factors associated with trafficking, and regarding the potential impacts of legalization of prostitution. Thai responses reflected collectivist cultural perceptions while English responses reflected more individualistic views. Males and English speakers were most likely to think legalized prostitution would lead to a reduction in human trafficking while females and Thais were most likely to believe legalized prostitution would increase trafficking. Responses to an open-ended question showed participants felt similarly about potential remedies for human trafficking, including information and awareness campaigns, interaction between civilians and police, increased penalties for offenders, and reduction in macro-environmental variables such as poverty.  &nbsp

This Article presents a mixed-methods, interdisciplinary study on educational policy and practice to offer solutions to fossilized problems extant across the United States’ elementary and secondary schools. Analysis of historic Supreme Court decisions and statutes unveil compelling trends that have shaped the legal landscape over the latter half of the twentieth century. Linguistic comparisons of two milestone revisions of the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act—No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)—show Congress granted more flexibility and authority to local districts and states under ESSA, which reflected trends in Supreme Court opinions over several decades. A comparative statistical analysis of state ESSA plans discovered not a single state met interim or long-term academic achievement targets. Concurrently, sources show that American education law intersects with civil and human rights, but public policy and practice have yet to consistently adhere to such emergent and enduring principles. In response to failures and shortcomings, policy recommendations include establishing student and teacher Bills of Rights, implementing cross-curricular assessment systems, redefining “proficiency,” and promoting enhanced collaboration among stakeholders in education

Ensuring the psychological well-being of service members and their families has emerged as one of the principal challenges of today‟s armed services. Given that the system of care of psychological health services in the United States Military cannot be divorced from the large healthcare delivery system, an enterprise perspective is needed to truly understand the dynamics of the system of care. This paper makes two key contributions: it identifies the key stakeholders of the military health enterprise with respect to psychological health, and analyzes the espoused senior leadership values over the last decade as seen in the stakeholder reports. This stakeholder analysis highlights the challenges faced in melding the constituent organizations into an enterprise, especially in the face of leadership turnover. The thematic analysis of senior leadership values shows an evolution of focus from managing execution of care to a more holistic emphasis on healthy lifestyles and psychological health

World War I in the Middle East was a humanitarian disaster of unprecidented scale. It was in the aftermath of this catastrophe that University of Michigan Professor of Archaeology Francis Willey Kelsey and U-M staff photographer George Robert Swain embarked on an expedition to the region, the purpose of which was to collect ancient Christian manuscripts destined to disappear in the postwar chaos.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/120267/1/now_or_never_15.pd
