Effects of nonlinear aerodynamics and static aeroelasticity on mission performance calculations for a fighter aircraft
During conceptual design studies of advanced aircraft, the usual practice is to use linear theory to calculate the aerodynamic characteristics of candidate rigid (nonflexible) geometric external shapes. Recent developments and improvements in computational methods, especially computational fluid dynamics (CFD), provide significantly improved capability to generate detailed analysis data for the use of all disciplines involved in the evaluation of a proposed aircraft design. A multidisciplinary application of such analysis methods to calculate the effects of nonlinear aerodynamics and static aeroelasticity on the mission performance of a fighter aircraft concept is described. The aircraft configuration selected for study was defined in a previous study using linear aerodynamics and rigid geometry. The results from the previous study are used as a basis of comparison for the data generated herein. Aerodynamic characteristics are calculated using two different nonlinear theories, potential flow and rotational (Euler) flow. The aerodynamic calculations are performed in an iterative procedure with an equivalent plate structural analysis method to obtain lift and drag data for a flexible (nonrigid) aircraft. These static aeroelastic data are then used in calculating the combat and mission performance characteristics of the aircraft
Reading-to-learn from subject-matter texts: A digital storytelling circle approach
Digital storytelling circles (DSCs) are multimodal platforms aimed at improving students’ comprehension of subject matter texts. In a small group, students in a DSC engage in reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, using digital tools, and manipulating texts and instructional strategies. Roles are assigned to each group member as they use the tools provided by the multimodal platform to create a digital story. Most of the literature supports the notion that the experience of creating digital stories can have a positive impact on students’ acquisition of literacy skills and their motivation to engage with the text. This chapter presents a model for using DSCs in the post-reading phase of a Directed Reading Activity (DRA). Case study findings highlight two DSCs that exhibited qualities of developing the literacy strategies necessary in reading-to-learn with complex content area texts.https://nsuworks.nova.edu/fse_facbooks/1000/thumbnail.jp
Measuring the eccentricity of the Earth orbit with a nail and a piece of plywood
I describe how to obtain a rather good experimental determination of the
eccentricity of the Earth orbit, as well as the obliquity of the Earth rotation
axis, by measuring, over the course of a year, the elevation of the Sun as a
function of time during a day. With a very simple "instrument" consisting of an
elementary sundial, first-year students can carry out an appealing measurement
programme, learn important concepts in experimental physics, see concrete
applications of kinematics and changes of reference frames, and benefit from a

Spectroscopic Observations of New Oort Cloud Comet 2006 VZ13 and Four Other Comets
Spectral data are presented for comets 2006 VZ13 (LINEAR), 2006 K4 (NEAT),
2006 OF2 (Broughton), 2P/Encke, and 93P/Lovas I, obtained with the Cerro-Tololo
Inter-American Observatory 1.5-m telescope in August 2007. Comet 2006 VZ13 is a
new Oort cloud comet and shows strong lines of CN (3880 angstroms), the Swan
band sequence for C_2 (4740, 5160, and 5630 angstroms), C_3 (4056 angstroms),
and other faint species. Lines are also identified in the spectra of the other
comets. Flux measurements of the CN, C_2 (Delta v = +1,0), and C_3 lines are
recorded for each comet and production rates and ratios are derived. When
considering the comets as a group, there is a correlation of C_2 and C_3
production with CN, but there is no conclusive evidence that the production
rate ratios depend on heliocentric distance. The continuum is also measured,
and the dust production and dust-to-gas ratios are calculated. There is a
general trend, for the group of comets, between the dust-to-gas ratio and
heliocentric distance, but it does not depend on dynamical age or class. Comet

Relationships Between Chemoreflex Responses, Sleep Quality, and Hematocrit in Andean Men and Women.
Andean highlanders are challenged by chronic hypoxia and many exhibit elevated hematocrit (Hct) and blunted ventilation compared to other high-altitude populations. While many Andeans develop Chronic Mountain Sickness (CMS) and excessive erythrocytosis, Hct varies markedly within Andean men and women and may be driven by individual differences in ventilatory control and/or sleep events which exacerbate hypoxemia. To test this hypothesis, we quantified relationships between resting ventilation and ventilatory chemoreflexes, sleep desaturation, breathing disturbance, and Hct in Andean men and women. Ventilatory measures were made in 109 individuals (n = 63 men; n = 46 women), and sleep measures in 45 of these participants (n = 22 men; n = 23 women). In both men and women, high Hct was associated with low daytime SpO2 (p < 0.001 and p < 0.002, respectively) and decreased sleep SpO2 (mean, nadir, and time <80%; all p < 0.02). In men, high Hct was also associated with increased end-tidal PCO2 (p < 0.009). While ventilatory responses to hypoxia and hypercapnia did not predict Hct, decreased hypoxic ventilatory responses were associated with lower daytime SpO2 in men (p < 0.01) and women (p < 0.009) and with lower nadir sleep SpO2 in women (p < 0.02). Decreased ventilatory responses to CO2 were associated with more time below 80% SpO2 during sleep in men (p < 0.05). The obstructive apnea index and apnea-hypopnea index also predicted Hct and CMS scores in men after accounting for age, BMI, and SpO2 during sleep. Finally, heart rate response to hypoxia was lower in men with higher Hct (p < 0.0001). These data support the idea that hypoventilation and decreased ventilatory sensitivity to hypoxia are associated with decreased day time and nighttime SpO2 levels that may exacerbate the stimulus for erythropoiesis in Andean men and women. However, interventional and longitudinal studies are required to establish the causal relationships between these associations
Rotational cooling of heteronuclear molecular ions with ^1-Sigma, ^2-Sigma, ^3-Sigma and ^2-Pi electronic ground states
The translational motion of molecular ions can be effectively cooled
sympathetically to translational temperatures below 100 mK in ion traps through
Coulomb interactions with laser-cooled atomic ions. The ro-vibrational degrees
of freedom, however, are expected to be largely unaffected during translational
cooling. We have previously proposed schemes for cooling of the internal
degrees of freedom of such translationally cold but internally hot
heteronuclear diatomic ions in the simplest case of ^1-Sigma electronic ground
state molecules. Here we present a significant simplification of these schemes
and make a generalization to the most frequently encountered electronic ground
states of heteronuclear molecular ions: ^1-Sigma, ^2-Sigma, ^3-Sigma and ^2-Pi.
The schemes are relying on one or two laser driven transitions with the
possible inclusion of a tailored incoherent far infrared radiation field.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figure
