Rebellions, Punishment, and Justice in the Elizabethan Era

2013-2014 U-M Library Undergraduate Research Award Maize Award for Single-Term Projects, Third PlaceIn 1569, eleven years after Queen Elizabeth I’s accession to the throne, two major rebellions occurred under her reign: the Northern Rebellion in Northumberland, England, and the first Desmond Rebellion in Ireland. These were not the first or last plots to overthrow the Queen’s rule, but they proved to be defining moments for Elizabeth as the Protestant Queen. Elizabeth was faced with the tasks of suppressing these rebellions, carrying out equitable means of justice and punishment, and preventing future rebellions by maintaining loyalty. Elizabeth’s reaction to these two rebellions was strongly influenced by money, politics, and fear, and had direct consequences on the future stability, or lack thereof, of northern England and Ireland. Analyzing the roles of figures in this rebellion, like James Fitzmaurice FitzGerald, Mary Queen of Scots, and the Pope, helps reveal the motivations behind Elizabeth’s decision-making. Literary commentary, notably Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queene and A View of the Present State of Ireland, also speaks to the Queen’s judicious approach to justice, and the driving forces behind her foreign and domestic policy post-rebellion. In the wake of these two rebellions, and as a consequence of the Queen’s reaction to these rebellions, Elizabeth saw relative peace and stability in the North; in Ireland, however, she was faced with a series of rebellions to come, specifically the Desmond Wars, which directly rooted from the first Desmond Rebellion.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/107404/1/Tayer_Project.pd

Parody as the Ironic Mode of Existential Art

    Get PDF
This study was commenced as an investigation into the aesthetics of existentialism as applied to contemporary art in America, particularly painting. This student believes that to the artist who recognizes the absurdity of his existence, irony is the natural mode of expression. It is also the belief of this student that the form of irony in recent American art, expressed primarily in parody and black humor, indicates America’s own particular brand of cheerful nihilism. The purpose was to better understand the aesthetics of existentialism, to apply these to contemporary art, and finally to apply these influences to the student’s own painting. The ultimate purpose was to objectify and articulate her own attitudes towards art

Snake envenomation in two cattle: clinical/laboratory aspects and treatment using equine-derived antivenin of Viperidae

    Get PDF
In this case report, specific antivenin treatment for Viperidae snake envenomation in two cattle was defined for the first time. The diagnosis of snake envenomation was made according to the history and clinical findings. Clinical examination revealed systemic(tachycardia, dyspnea, cyanosis, hypersalivation, ruminal hypotony) and local (swelling of the leg and head) findings depending on thelocation of snake bites. Laboratory analysis determined granulocytic leukocytosis, monocytosis, decreased iron binding capacity, andincreased CK and LDH enzyme activities. In the specific treatment of cases, equine-derived polyvalent antivenin containing antitoxicimmunoglobulins against Viperidae species was administered. Additionally, 5% dextrose, antibiotics, dexamethasone, antihistamines, diuretics, and a vitamin B complex were applied. All clinical and laboratory abnormalities improved after treatment. Complete clinicalimprovement was observed within 1 week in both cases. The results indicate that equine-derived specific antivenin treatment in snakebites of the family Viperidae can be successfully used in cattle

Astrophysical and Astrobiological Implications of Gamma-Ray Burst Properties

Combining results for the local cosmic rate and mean peak luminosity of GRBs with the cosmic history of the star formation rate, we provide estimates for the local GRB rate per unit blue luminosity in galaxies. We find a typical GRB rate per unit B luminosity of 2.4x10^-17 h_{70}^2/Lsun/yr. The corresponding mean rate in the Milky Way is 5.5x10^-7 h_{70}^2/yr. We conclude: 1) the ratio of supernova rate to isotropic equivalent GRB rate is large: more than 6000 SNIbc per GRB or 30,000 SNII per GRB. GRBs could arise in a large fraction of black hole-forming events only with collimation in the range 0.01 - 0.001 and a steep enough slope of the IMF; 2) GRBs cannot account for the majority of large HI holes observed in galaxies; 3) the probability that the solar system was exposed to a fluence large enough to melt the chondrules during the first 10^7 yr of solar system history is negligibly small; 4) Even for very opaque atmospheres, a significant fraction of the GRB energy is transmitted as UV lines due to excitation by secondary electrons. For eukaryotic-like organisms in thin atmospheres (e.g. contemporary Mars), or for UV line exposure in thick atmospheres (e.g. Earth), biologically significant events occur at a rate of about 100--500 /Gyr. The direct contribution of these "jolts" to mutational evolution may, however, be negligible because of the short duration of the GRBs. Evolutionary effects due to partial sterilizations and to longer-lived disruptions of atmospheric chemistry should be more important.

    Familial Mediterranean Fever and Hypercoagulability

    Get PDF
Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive hereditary disease which is characterized by recurrent attacks of fever and peritonitis, pleuritis, arthritis, or erysipelas-like skin disease. As such, FMF is a prototype of autoinflammatory diseases where genetic changes lead to acute inflammatory episodes. Systemic inflammation – in general - may increase procoagulant factors, and decrease natural anticoagulants and fibrinolytic activity. Therefore, it is anticipated to see more thrombotic events among FMF patients compared with healthy subjects. However, reviewing the current available literature and based upon our personal experience, thrombotic events related purely to FMF are very rare. Possible explanation for this discrepancy is that along with the procoagulant activity during FMF acute attacks, anticoagulant and fibrinolytic changes are also taking place. Colchicine which is the treatment of choice in FMF may also play a role in reducing inflammation thereby decreasing hypercoagulability
