Robustness of animal production systems : concept and application to practical cases
A concept and method are developed and applied to improve robustness in animal production
Utilising intrinsic robustness in agricultural production systems: Inventions for a sustainable development of agriculture
This paper explores the potential of utilising robust crops and livestock for improving sustainability of agriculture. Two approaches for dealing with unwanted fluctuations that may influence agricultural production, such as diseases and pests, are discussed. The prevailing approach, which we call the ‘Control Model’, is to protect crops and livestock from disturbances as much as possible, to regain balance with monitoring and intervention and to look for add-on solutions only. There are a number of problems associated with the Control Model, including reduced animal welfare, environmental pollution and low public support. An alternative approach, which we call the ‘Adaptation Model’, is based on reducing the consequences of disturbances rather than taking disturbances ou
Numerical calculations of the pressure spike in elastohydrodynamic lubrication
The application of advanced multilevel techniques to the solution of the EHL line contact problem has resulted in a multilevel solver of complexity O(n In n). The reduction in computing time thus obtained enables the use of large numbers of nodes and allows detailed study of the pressure spike. Both occurrence and height of the spike as a function of the governing parameters were studied. The parameter range where a pressure spike can be expected, and the results of spike height calculations, are presented
Discrimination of human cytotoxic lymphocytes from regulatory and B-lymphocytes by orthogonal light scattering
Light scattering properties of human lymphocyte subpopulations selected by immunofluorescence were studied with a flow cytometer. Regulatory and B-lymphocytes showed a low orthogonal light scatter signal, whereas cytotoxic lymphocytes identified with leu-7, leu-11 and leu-15 revealed a large orthogonal light scatter signal. Two populations in light scatter histograms could be observed with monoclonal antibodies directed against determinants present on both regulatory and cytotoxic lymphocytes. By analysis of the lymphocytes of 16 individuals we found a linear relation between the number of cells with a large orthogonal light scattering and the number of cytotoxic lymphocytes identified with leu-7, leu-11 and leu-15. These observations demonstrate physical differences between cytotoxic lymphocytes and regulatory and B lymphocytes. Moreover, the results suggest a method to estimate the amount of cytotoxic lymphocytes without using monoclonal antibodies
Lubrication in cold rolling: Elasto-plasto-hydrodynamic lubrication
A model has been developed with respect to hydrodynamic lubrication in cold rolling. The basic model describes the configuration of a rigid, perfectly plastic sheet rolled by a rigid work roll. The governing equations have been solved throughout the complete contact area, i.e. the inlet, the work zone and the outlet zone. Multi-level techniques have been applied to solve these equations together with boundary conditions, resulting in an algorithm solving the problem in O(n) operations. This means that the distribution of the pressure and the traction force in the lubricant film, and the shape of this film, as well as the plastic deformation of the sheet, can be accurately calculated for a large number of nodal points on a minicomputer. Subsequently elastic deformation, work hardening and dynamic behaviour of the flow stress have been incorporated in the model. It will be shown that the influence of these effects on the film thickness or the pressure distribution is considerable
WUR-onderzoek geeft enkele aanknopingspunten
