    Local adaptation of two cryptic species, Lasthenia californica and Lasthenia gracilis, to distinct regions within a serpentine outcrop

    Intraspecific variation providing tolerance to specific edaphic conditions may contribute to population differentiation, speciation, and species coexistence. This process is often examined using reciprocal transplant experiments of closely related species in contrasting edaphic conditions. The two cryptic species Lasthenia californica and L. gracilis occur on a serpentine outcrop in parapatry at Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve. I hypothesized that each species would demonstrate greater fitness in its home range. A reciprocal transplant experiment was conducted in the field to determine home site advantage. Seedlings from each species were planted in both home ranges and in the transition zone where both species occur. Soil was found to vary significantly by outcrop region, particularly with respect to the calcium-to-magnesium ratio. Lasthenia californica performed best in its home range, but L. gracilis demonstrated greater survival and fitness in the transition zone. These findings provided evidence of local adaptation of L. californica to the bottom of the slope where the soil calcium concentration is lower and magnesium concentration is higher, and local adaptation of L. gracilis to the transition zone and the drier top of the slope. Studies on local adaptation using reciprocal transplants are ideal tools for understanding plant evolution and provide valuable information for habitat restoration

    Method and apparatus for predicting the direction of movement in machine vision

    A computer-simulated cortical network is presented. The network is capable of computing the visibility of shifts in the direction of movement. Additionally, the network can compute the following: (1) the magnitude of the position difference between the test and background patterns; (2) localized contrast differences at different spatial scales analyzed by computing temporal gradients of the difference and sum of the outputs of paired even- and odd-symmetric bandpass filters convolved with the input pattern; and (3) the direction of a test pattern moved relative to a textured background. The direction of movement of an object in the field of view of a robotic vision system is detected in accordance with nonlinear Gabor function algorithms. The movement of objects relative to their background is used to infer the 3-dimensional structure and motion of object surfaces

    Role Strain of Nursing Students in Obstetrical Clinical Rotations: Is Role Strain Greater for Male Students?

    As increasing numbers of men enter the career of nursing, it is important that nursing educators identify areas of role strain and learning needs that may be different from their female counterparts This research project examined the role strain factors of nursing students who have completed the maternaVnewbom (obstetrical) clinical experience in a baccalaureate nursing program. The research question addressed in this research project was: Do male nursing students experience greater role strain than female nursing students in the matemaVnewbom setting? A convenience sample of male students (N=23) and a random sampling of female students (N=23) participated in this study. The Junior and Senior level nursing students who had completed the obstetrical rotation within the last 3 semesters were recruited to complete the Sherrod Role Strain Scale ( 40 question Likert scale survey tool) at specified times during fall semester 2008. Data was analyzed as grouped data and female/male responses were also compared. The overall score showed no gender differences in role strain (p value= 0.917). The four subcategories (Overload, Conflict, Incongruity, and Ambiguity) also did not reflect gender differences in this sample. The findings of this study did not support the concept of male students experiencing greater role strain than their female counterparts. Further studies examining role strain factors, student perceptions of role strain, and comparing men students in various nursing programs are recommended

    Video conferencing: an effective solution to long distance student placement support?

    Background Within many health related degree programmes, students receive support during placements via visiting tutors. Literature discusses the importance of this support but economic and environmental arguments indicate a need for alternatives to supporting a student in situ. This project investigated the logistics of and perceptions towards using video conferencing as a means of providing this support. Methods A pilot project was undertaken in which an in situ, support meeting was replaced with a meeting via video link. All participants completed evaluative questionnaires and students attended a follow up focus group in order to explore responses in more depth. Results and discussion Use of the medium identified key logistical hurdles in implementing technology into existing support systems. All participants expressed enthusiasm for the medium with educators expressing a preference. Students identified concerns over the use of this medium for failing placements but could not identify why. As a result of evaluation, this project has raised a number of questions relating to the fitness for purpose of video conferencing in this context. Conclusion Future research aims to respond to the questions raised in evaluating the value and purpose of placement support and the nature of conversations via the video conferencing medium

    Low-carbohydrate diets for gestational diabetes

    Nutrition therapy provides the foundation for treatment of gestational diabetes (GDM), and has historically been based on restricting carbohydrate (CHO) intake. In this paper, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are reviewed to assess the effects of both low- and higher CHO nutrition approaches in GDM. The prevailing pattern across the evidence underscores that although CHO restriction improves glycemia at least in the short-term, similar outcomes could be achievable using less restrictive approaches that may not exacerbate IR. The quality of existing studies is limited, in part due to dietary non-adherence and confounding effects of treatment with insulin or oral medication. Recent evidence suggests that modified nutritional manipulation in GDM from usual intake, including but not limited to CHO restriction, improves maternal glucose and lowers infant birthweight. This creates a platform for future studies to further clarify the impact of multiple nutritional patterns in GDM on both maternal and infant outcomes
