An algorithm for the rapid location of an extreme of a function subject only to geometric restrictions
The requirements of symmetry and convexity in the application of algorithms for the minimization or maximization of a function are discussed. It is argued that if a function of a single variable is convex and symmetric in a neighborhood of an extremum, the extremum may be approximated to the precision that increases by at least a power of two per functional evaluation. The procedure may be used to drive a complex optimization procedure in the multivariate area estimation problem encountered in remote sensing

The sustainable delivery of sexual violence prevention education in schools
Sexual violence is a crime that cannot be ignored: it causes our communities significant
consequences including heavy economic costs, and evidence of its effects can be seen in our
criminal justice system, public health system, Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC),
and education system, particularly in our schools. Many agencies throughout New Zealand
work to end sexual violence. Auckland-based Rape Prevention Education: Whakatu Mauri
(RPE) is one such agency, and is committed to preventing sexual violence by providing a
range of programmes and initiatives, information, education, and advocacy to a broad range
of audiences.
Up until early 2014 RPE employed one or two full-time positions dedicated to co-ordinating
and training a large pool (up to 15) of educators on casual contracts to deliver their main
school-based programmes, BodySafe – approximately 450 modules per year, delivered to
some 20 high schools. Each year several of the contract educators, many of whom were
tertiary students, found secure full time employment elsewhere. To retain sufficient
contract educators to deliver its BodySafe contract meant that RPE had to recruit, induct
and train new educators two to three times every year. This model was expensive, resource
intense, and ultimately untenable. The Executive Director and core staff at RPE wanted to
develop a more efficient and stable model of delivery that fitted its scarce resources.
To enable RPE to know what the most efficient model was nationally and internationally,
with Ministry of Justice funding, RPE commissioned Massey University to undertake this
report reviewing national and international research on sexual violence prevention

Adult BMI change and risk of Breast Cancer: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2010
OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer mortality among women in the developed world. This study assessed the association between occurrence of breast cancer and body mass index (BMI) change from age 25 to age closest to breast cancer diagnosis while exploring the modifying effects of demographic variables.
METHODS: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data were used. Women included were ≥50 years, not pregnant and without a diagnosis of any cancer but breast. The total sample included 2895 women (172 with breast cancer and 2723 controls with no breast cancer diagnosis). Multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate the OR and 95 % CIs and interaction evaluated by including an interaction term in the model.
RESULTS: Women whose BMI increased from normal or overweight to obese compared to those who remained at a normal BMI were found to have a 2 times higher odds (OR = 2.1; 95 % CI 1.11-3.79) of developing breast cancer. No significant association was observed for women who increased to overweight. However, a more pronounced association was observed in non-Hispanic black women (OR = 6.6; 95 % CI 1.68-25.86) and a significant association observed when they increased from normal to overweight (OR = 4.2; 95 % CI 1.02-17.75).
CONCLUSIONS: Becoming obese after age 25 is associated with increased risk of breast cancer in women over 50 years old, with non-Hispanic black women being at greatest risk
Constraints of a pulsation frequency on stellar parameters in the eclipsing spectroscopic binary system: V577 Oph
We present a preliminary spectroscopic analysis of the binary system V577Oph,
observed during the summer of 2007 on the 2.6m NOT telescope on La Palma. We
have obtained time series spectroscopic observations, which show clear binary
motion as well as radial velocity variations due to pulsation in the primary
star. By modelling the radial velocities we determine a full orbital solution
of the system, which yields M_A sin^3 i = 1.562 +/- 0.012 M_solar and M_B sin^3
i = 1.461 +/- 0.020 M_solar. An estimate of inclination from photometry yields
a primary mass of 1.6 M_solar. Using this derived mass, and the known pulsation
frequency we can impose a lower limit of 1 Gyr on the age of the system, and
constrain the parameters of the oscillation mode. We show that with further
analysis of the spectra (extracting the atmospheric parameters), tighter
constraints could be imposed on the age, metallicity and the mode parameters.
This work emphasizes the power that a single pulsation frequency can have for
constraining stellar parameters in an eclipsing binary system.Comment: Accepted by A
The Interplanetary Network Supplement to the BeppoSAX Gamma-Ray Burst Catalogs
Between 1996 July and 2002 April, one or more spacecraft of the
interplanetary network detected 787 cosmic gamma-ray bursts that were also
detected by the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and/or Wide-Field X-Ray Camera
experiments aboard the BeppoSAX spacecraft. During this period, the network
consisted of up to six spacecraft, and using triangulation, the localizations
of 475 bursts were obtained. We present the localization data for these events.Comment: 89 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

Changes in Adult BMI and Waist Circumference Are Associated with Increased Risk of Advanced Colorectal Neoplasia
BACKGROUND:
Waist circumference (WC) is a stronger predictor of colon cancer (CRC) risk than body mass index (BMI). However, how well change in either WC or BMI predicts risk of advanced colorectal neoplasia (AN) is unclear.
AIMS:
To determine the relationship between change in BMI and WC from early adulthood to later age and the risk of AN and which change measure is a stronger predictor.
METHODS:
In 4500 adults, ages 50-80, with no previous neoplasia and undergoing screening colonoscopy, BMI and WC at age 21 and at time of screening were reported. Changes in BMI and WC were defined using universal risk cutoffs. Known CRC risk factors were controlled in the logistic models.
RESULTS:
Overall, model statistics showed WC change (omnibus test χ 2 = 10.15, 2 DF, p value = 0.006) was a statistically stronger predictor of AN than BMI change (omnibus test χ 2 = 5.66, 5 DF, p value = 0.34). Independent of BMI change, participants who increased WC (OR 1.44; 95% CI 1.05-1.96) or maintained a high-risk WC (OR 2.50; 95% CI 1.38-4.53) at age 21 and at screening had an increased risk of AN compared to those with a low-risk WC. Study participants who were obese at age 21 and at screening had an increased risk of AN (OR 1.87; 95% CI 1.08-3.23) compared to those who maintained a healthy BMI. Maintaining an overweight BMI or increasing BMI was not associated with AN.
CONCLUSIONS:
Maintaining an unhealthy BMI and WC throughout adult life may increase risk of AN. WC change may be a better predictor of AN than BMI change
A Search for Hierarchical Triples using Kepler Eclipse Timing
We present the first results of a Kepler survey of 41 eclipsing binaries that
we undertook to search for third star companions. Such tertiaries will
periodically alter the eclipse timings through light travel time and dynamical
effects. We discuss the prevalence of starspots and pulsation among these
binaries and how these phenomena influence the eclipse times. There is no
evidence of short period companions (P < 700 d) among this sample, but we do
find evidence for long term timing variations in 14 targets (34%). We argue
that this finding is consistent with the presence of tertiary companions among
a significant fraction of the targets, especially if many have orbits measured
in decades. This result supports the idea that the formation of close binaries
involves the deposition of angular momentum into the orbital motion of a third
