Probabilistic Inference from Arbitrary Uncertainty using Mixtures of Factorized Generalized Gaussians

This paper presents a general and efficient framework for probabilistic inference and learning from arbitrary uncertain information. It exploits the calculation properties of finite mixture models, conjugate families and factorization. Both the joint probability density of the variables and the likelihood function of the (objective or subjective) observation are approximated by a special mixture model, in such a way that any desired conditional distribution can be directly obtained without numerical integration. We have developed an extended version of the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm to estimate the parameters of mixture models from uncertain training examples (indirect observations). As a consequence, any piece of exact or uncertain information about both input and output values is consistently handled in the inference and learning stages. This ability, extremely useful in certain situations, is not found in most alternative methods. The proposed framework is formally justified from standard probabilistic principles and illustrative examples are provided in the fields of nonparametric pattern classification, nonlinear regression and pattern completion. Finally, experiments on a real application and comparative results over standard databases provide empirical evidence of the utility of the method in a wide range of applications

A comparative study of the characteristics of French Fries produced by deep fat frying and air frying

Air frying is being projected as an alternative to deep fat frying for producing snacks such as French Fries. In air frying, the raw potato sections are essentially heated in hot air containing fine oil droplets, which dehydrates the potato and attempts to impart the characteristics of traditionally produced French fries, but with a substantially lower level of fat absorbed in the product. The aim of this research is to compare: 1) the process dynamics of air frying with conventional deep fat frying under otherwise similar operating conditions, and 2) the products formed by the two processes in terms of color, texture, microstructure, calorimetric properties and sensory characteristics Although, air frying produced products with a substantially lower fat content but with similar moisture contents and color characteristics, it required much longer processing times, typically 21 minutes in relation to 9 minutes in the case of deep fat frying. The slower evolution of temperature also resulted in lower rates of moisture loss and color development reactions. DSC studies revealed that the extent of starch gelatinization was also lower in the case of air fried product. In addition, the two types of frying also resulted in products having significantly different texture and sensory characteristics

A consistent methodology for the derivation and calibration of a macroscopic turbulence model for flows in porous media

This work aims to model turbulent flows in media laden with solid structures according to porous media approach. A complete set of macroscopic transport equations is derived by spatially averaging the Reynolds averaged governing equations. A two-scale analysis highlights energy transfers between macroscopic and sub-filter kinetic energies (dispersive and turbulent kinetic energies). Additional terms coming from the averaging procedure and representing solids/fluid interactions and turbulent contributions are modeled. Connections between turbulence modeling and dispersion modeling are presented. Other closure expressions are determined using physical considerations and spatial averaging of microscopic computations. A special care is given to the calibration methodology for the phenomenological coefficients. Results of the present model are successfully compared to volume-averaged reference results coming from fine scale computations and show significant improvements with respect to previous macroscopic models

La ciudad romana de Turobriga. Un modelo urbano en los Llanos de Aroche (Huelva)

The roman Turobriga, although known by scientists in the middle of 60's, until 1996 no archaeological excavations were conducted therein. As from said year several papers and reports have been issued of diverse field works carried out my members of Area de Arqueología de la Universidad de Huelva. In this paper a synthesis of new evidence is presented regarding historial implications of roman town in the Picos de Aroche territory context, its urban pattern, and special relevance of the evidence obtained in the forum area is giving.Aunque la ciudad romana de Turobriga es conocida en el mundo científico desde mediados de los años setenta, no se había realizado sobre ella ningún tipo de investigación hasta la presencia del Área de Arqueología de la Universidad de Huelva a partir de 1996. Desde entonces se han realizado varias campañas de investigación, de diferente carácter, que han generado varios artículos publicados en Congresos o revistas científicas, así como los preceptivos informes y memorias con los resultados de todas las intervenciones. En este trabajo presentamos una breve síntesis de los avances que se han producido, en especial en lo referente a la significación histórica de Turobriga en el contexto territorial de los Picos de Aroche y en las características de su trama urbana, resaltando especialmente los avances en el área del forum

Las necrópolis de Onuba

In this work a first global and updated approach on the funerary world of the roman city of Onuba Aestuaria –Huelva– is offered. We present the fi rst synthesis about the situation of different cemeterys in the city from the revision of the data provided by the archaeological interventions carried out mid the Sixties of the last century, between to the incorporation of the last new features related to modern research developed in the Archaeological Zone of Huelva.En el presente trabajo se ofrece un primer acercamiento conjunto y actualizado sobre el mundo funerario de la ciudad de Onuba Aestuaria, identifi cada con la actual capital onubense. Se hace una puesta al día sobre las investigaciones realizadas en este campo y se muestra la primera síntesis sobre la situación de las diferentes necrópolis de la ciudad a partir de la revisión de los datos proporcionados por las intervenciones arqueológicas realizadas desde mediados de los años sesenta de la pasada centuria, junto con la incorporación de las últimas novedades derivadas de la intensa actividad arqueológica que se realiza actualmente en la Zona Arqueológica de Huelva

Convenio tripartito entre la Universidad, la Dirección Penal Juvenil y la Secretaría de recursos hídricos en salta experiencias en transferencia y producción de tecnología.

Se presentan las tareas realizadas que condujeron a la concreción de un convenio entre tres partes institucionales de la Provincia de Salta. El objetivo principal fue la transferencia y producción de tecnología sencilla para la cocción solar y de cocinas a leña optimizadas, con jóvenes alojados en dispositivos dependientes de la Dirección General de Justicia Penal Juvenil, a fin de satisfacer necesidades de personas originarias de la margen salteña del río Pilcomayo.Fil: Passamai, Victor Jose.
