American news media as well as American textbooks, both college and secondary schools, present India as a unique society because it practices the caste system, which is then described in terms of its presumed traditional characteristics. Americans thus learn to picture the Indian society as extremely static and assume that the caste system still continues in its traditional form. The fact is that even in traditional times, the caste system never existed as it was theoretically supposed to operate. Electromagnetic Energy, Momentum, and Angular Momentum in an Inhomogeneous Linear Dielectric
In a previous work, Optics Communications 284 (2011) 2460--2465, we
considered a dielectric medium with an anti-reflection coating and a spatially
uniform index of refraction illuminated at normal incidence by a
quasimonochromatic field. Using the continuity equations for the
electromagnetic energy density and the Gordon momentum density, we constructed
a traceless, symmetric energy--momentum tensor for the closed system. In this
work, we relax the condition of a uniform index of refraction and consider a
dielectric medium with a spatially varying index of refraction that is
independent of time, which essentially represents a mechanically rigid
dielectric medium due to external constraints. Using continuity equations for
energy density and for Gordon momentum density, we construct a symmetric
energy--momentum matrix, whose four-divergence is equal to a generalized
Helmholtz force density four-vector. Assuming that the energy-momentum matrix
has tensor transformation properties under a symmetry group of space-time
coordinate transformations, we derive the global conservation laws for the
total energy, momentum, and angular momentum.Comment: added publication informatio
Landscape and well-being: a scoping study on the health-promoting impact of outdoor environments
Objectives: The present literature review conceptualises landscape as a health resource that promotes physical, mental, and social well-being. Different health-promoting landscape characteristics are discussed. Methods: This article is based on a scoping study which represents a special kind of qualitative literature review. Over 120 studies have been reviewed in a five-step-procedure, resulting in a heuristic device. Results: A set of meaningful pathways that link landscape and health have been identified. Landscapes have the potential to promote mental well-being through attention restoration, stress reduction, and the evocation of positive emotions; physical well-being through the promotion of physical activity in daily life as well as leisure time and through walkable environments; and social well-being through social integration, social engagement and participation, and through social support and security. Conclusion: This scoping study allows us to systematically describe the potential of landscape as a resource for physical, mental and social well-being. A heuristic framework is presented that can be applied in future studies, facilitating systematic and focused research approaches and informing practical public health intervention
Geodesics on a supermanifold and projective equivalence of super connections
We investigate the concept of projective equivalence of connections in
supergeometry. To this aim, we propose a definition for (super) geodesics on a
supermanifold in which, as in the classical case, they are the projections of
the integral curves of a vector field on the tangent bundle: the geodesic
vector field associated with the connection. Our (super) geodesics possess the
same properties as the in the classical case: there exists a unique (super)
geodesic satisfying a given initial condition and when the connection is
metric, our supergeodesics coincide with the trajectories of a free particle
with unit mass. Moreover, using our definition, we are able to establish Weyl's
characterization of projective equivalence in the super context: two
torsion-free (super) connections define the same geodesics (up to
reparametrizations) if and only if their difference tensor can be expressed by
means of a (smooth, even, super) 1-form.Comment: 20 page
Interfaces in driven Ising models: shear enhances confinement
We use a phase-separated driven two-dimensional Ising lattice gas to study
fluid interfaces exposed to shear flow parallel to the interface. The interface
is stabilized by two parallel walls with opposing surface fields and a driving
field parallel to the walls is applied which (i) either acts locally at the
walls or (ii) varies linearly with distance across the strip. Using computer
simulations with Kawasaki dynamics, we find that the system reaches a steady
state in which the magnetisation profile is the same as that in equilibrium,
but with a rescaled length implying a reduction of the interfacial width. An
analogous effect was recently observed in sheared phase-separated colloidal
dispersions. Pair correlation functions along the interface decay more rapidly
with distance under drive than in equilibrium and for cases of weak drive can
