Beyond Intergovernmental Coordination: EU Corporate Foreign Policy Action and the Crisis over Ukraine
Introduction: Since 2014, the European Union (EU) finds itself in the midst of an international crisis over the status and territorial integrity of Ukraine that might have the potential of creating a new conflict among great powers in Europe (Smith 2014, Ferreira-Pereira and Vieira 2014). Moreover, the EU seems to be a major Western player in this conflict– not its member states, nor the United States. The EU seems to behave as a great regional power in its own right that is capable of confronting the newly empowered Russia that is gradually recovering from its defeat upon the breakdown of the Soviet Union in 1990. And Russia seems to take the EU serious as a regional power in Europe (Dragneva and Wolczuk 2012, Aslund 2013). This is puzzling for those many observers holding the widely shared belief that the shortcomings of its intergovernmentally organized Common Foreign and Security Policy preclude decisive EU action on issues of high politics
Technical Analysis in Foreign Exchange - The Workhorse Gains Further Ground
This work extends earlier survey studies on the use of technical analysis by considering flow analysis as a third form of information production. Moreover the survey covers FX dealers and also the rising fund managers. Technical analysis has gained importance over time and is now the most equally spread kind of analysis. It has by far the greatest importance in FX dealing and is second in fund management. Charts are used for shorter-term forecasting horizons while flows dominate at the shortest-term and fundamentals at longer horizons. Preferred users of each kind of analysis exhibit different views about market frictions
The dual nature of trehalose in citrus canker disease: A virulence factor for Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri and a trigger for plant defence responses
Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc) is a bacterial pathogen that causes citrus canker in susceptible Citrus spp. The Xcc genome contains genes encoding enzymes from three separate pathways of trehalose biosynthesis. Expression of genes encoding trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (otsA) and trehalose phosphatase (otsB) was highly induced during canker development, suggesting that the two-step pathway of trehalose biosynthesis via trehalose-6-phosphate has a function in pathogenesis. This pathway was eliminated from the bacterium by deletion of the otsA gene. The resulting XccΔotsA mutant produced less trehalose than the wild-type strain, was less resistant to salt and oxidative stresses, and was less able to colonize plant tissues. Gene expression and proteomic analyses of infected leaves showed that infection with XccΔotsA triggered only weak defence responses in the plant compared with infection with Xcc, and had less impact on the host plant's metabolism than the wild-type strain. These results suggested that trehalose of bacterial origin, synthesized via the otsA-otsB pathway, in Xcc, plays a role in modifying the host plant's metabolism to its own advantage but is also perceived by the plant as a sign of pathogen attack. Thus, trehalose biosynthesis has both positive and negative consequences for Xcc. On the one hand, it enables this bacterial pathogen to survive in the inhospitable environment of the leaf surface before infection and exploit the host plant's resources after infection, but on the other hand, it is a tell-tale sign of the pathogen's presence that triggers the plant to defend itself against infection.Fil: Piazza, Ainelén Melanie. Lattice Dynamics of Solid Cubane within the Quasi-Harmonic Approximation
Solid cubane, which is composed of weakly interacting cubic molecules,
exhibits many unusual and interesting properties, such as a very large thermal
expansion and a first-order phase transition at T=394 K from an
orientationally-ordered phase of R symmetry to a {\it non-cubic}
disordered phase of the same symmetry with a volume expansion of 5.4%, among
the largest ever observed. We study the lattice dynamics of solid cubane within
the quasi-harmonic and rigid-molecule approximation to explain some of these
unusual dynamical properties. The calculated phonon density of states,
dispersion curves and thermal expansion agree surprisingly well with available
experimental data. We find that the amplitude of thermally excited
orientational excitations (i.e. librons) increases rapidly with increasing
temperature and reaches about 35 just before the orientational phase
transition. Hence, the transition is driven by large-amplitude collective
motions of the cubane molecules. Similarly the amplitude of the translational
excitations shows a strong temperature dependence and reaches one tenth of the
lattice constant at T=440 K. This temperature is in fair agreement with the
experimental melting temperature of 405 K, indicating that the Lindemann

Stages of change for perceived stress in a Swiss population sample: An explorative study
Summary: Objectives: Data from a cross-sectional survey of the Swiss general population were used in an explorative attempt to apply the transtheoretical model of behavioural change to perceived stress. Methods: The sample comprised 575 respondents who reported having experienced stressful situations in the previous month. Other variables assessed included gender, age, education, reported symptoms, and three constructs representing stages and processes of change as well as self-efficacy. Results: Findings indicated that (1) about one third of respondents appeared to cope successfully with the stressful situations they experienced, one third intended to do so, while one quarter appeared to have no intention of managing their stress more effectively. (2) There was no difference in stage of change distribution by gender or age, while those with higher education were more frequently represented in the latter stages than those with lower education. (3) Those in the maintenance stage reported significantly less symptoms than others. Insights into Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri biofilm through proteomics
Background: Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (X. a. pv. citri) causes citrus canker that can result in defoliation and premature fruit drop with significant production losses worldwide. Biofilm formation is an important process in bacterial pathogens and several lines of evidence suggest that in X. a. pv. citri this process is a equirement to achieve maximal virulence since it has a major role in host interactions. In this study, proteomics was used to gain further insights into the functions of biofilms.
Results: In order to identify differentially expressed proteins, a comparative proteomic study using 2D difference gel electrophoresis was carried out on X. a. pv. citri mature biofilm and planktonic cells. The biofilm proteome showed major variations in the composition of outer membrane proteins and receptor or transport proteins. Among them, several porins and TonB-dependent receptor were differentially regulated in the biofilm compared to the planktonic cells, indicating that these proteins may serve in maintaining specific membrane-associated functions including signaling and cellular homeostasis. In biofilms, UDP-glucose dehydrogenase with a major role in exopolysaccharide production and the non-fimbrial adhesin YapH involved in adherence were over-expressed, while a polynucleotide phosphorylase that was demonstrated to negatively control biofilm formation in E. coli was down-regulated. In addition, several proteins involved in protein synthesis, folding and stabilization were up-regulated in biofilms. Interestingly, some proteins related to energy production, such as ATP-synthase were down-regulated in biofilms. Moreover, a number of enzymes of the tricarboxylic acid cycle were differentially expressed. In addition, X. a. pv. citri biofilms also showed down-regulation of several antioxidant enzymes. The respective gene expression patterns of several identified proteins in both X. a. pv. citri mature biofilm and planktonic cells were evaluated by quantitative
real-time PCR and shown to consistently correlate with those deduced from the proteomic study. Conclusions: Differentially expressed proteins are enriched in functional categories. Firstly, proteins that are downregulated
in X. a. pv. citri biofilms are enriched for the gene ontology (GO) terms ‘generation of precursor metabolites and energy’ and secondly, the biofilm proteome mainly changes in ‘outer membrane and receptor or transport’. We argue that the differentially expressed proteins have a critical role in maintaining a functional external structure as well as enabling appropriate flow of nutrients and signals specific to the biofilm lifestyle.Fil: Zimaro, Tamara. Transtheoretical Model-based exercise counselling for older adults in Switzerland: quantitative results over a 1-year period
Summary.: Objectives:: To develop and test a counselling programme based on the Transtheoretical Model of behavioural change, for promoting exercise in people over the age of 65. Method:: The sample (n = 448) consisted of women and men aged between 65 and 92, recruited from Swiss GPs' practices between 2000 and 2004. After a baseline measurement (T1) and an initial counselling session, they received two counselling sessions, followed by a 12-month follow-up (T2). Changes in exercise behaviour were recorded by means of stage classifi cation and the time spent on everyday moderate-intensity activities that increase the breathing rate. Results:: At T1 there was a tendency for women to be less physically active than men. T1 to T2 the proportion of inactive people fell from 12.2% to 4.2%, and the proportion of people sufficiently active rose from 19.0% to 31.3%. The changes in stage were significant in both men and women. At T2 more than half of the participants in the study spent more time exercising. Squeezed vacuum states from a whispering gallery mode resonator
Squeezed vacuum states enable optical measurements below the quantum limit
and hence are a valuable resource for applications in quantum metrology and
also quantum communication. However, most available sources require high pump
powers in the milliwatt range and large setups, which hinders real world
applications. Furthermore, degenerate operation of such systems presents a
challenge. Here, we use a compact crystalline whispering gallery mode resonator
made of lithium niobate as a degenerate parametric oscillator. We demonstrate
about 1.4 dB noise reduction below the shot noise level for only 300
of pump power in degenerate single mode operation. Furthermore,
we report a record pump threshold as low as 1.35 . Our results
show that the whispering gallery based approach presents a promising platform
