    Changing practice in Malaysian primary schools: learning from student teachers’ reports of using action, reflection and modelling (ARM)

Under embargo until 1 August 2019.Curricular and pedagogical reforms are complex inter-linked processes such that curricular reform can only be enacted through teachers teaching differently. This article reports the perspective of emergent Malaysian primary teachers who were expected to implement a Government reform that promoted active learning. The 120 student teachers were members of a single cohort completing a new B.Ed. degree programme in Primary Mathematics designed by teacher educators from Malaysia and the UK. They were taught to use a tripartite pedagogical framework involving action or active learning, supported in practice through reflection and modelling. Drawing on findings from surveys carried out with the student teachers at the end of their first and final placements this article examines evidence for the premise that the student teachers were teaching differently; illustrates how they reported using active learning strategies; and identifies factors that enabled and constrained pedagogic change in the primary classroom. The students’ accounts of using action, reflection and modelling are critiqued in order to learn about changing learning and teaching practice and to contribute to understanding teacher education and early teacher development. The students’ reports suggest diversity of understanding that emphasises the need to challenge assumptions when working internationally and within national and local cultures.Peer reviewe

    Core story creation: analysing narratives to construct stories for learning

    Background: Educational research uses narrative enquiry to gain and interpret people’s experiences. Narrative analysis is used to organise and make sense of acquired narrative. ‘Core story creation’ is a way of managing raw data obtained from narrative interviews to construct stories for learning. Aim: To explain how core story creation can be used to construct stories from raw narratives obtained by interviewing parents about their neonatal experiences and then use these stories to educate learners. Discussion: Core story creation involves reconfiguration of raw narratives. Reconfiguration includes listening to and rereading transcribed narratives, identifying elements of ‘emplotment’ and reordering these to form a constructed story. Thematic analysis is then performed on the story to draw out learning themes informed by the participants. Conclusion: Core story creation using emplotment is a strategy of narrative reconfiguration that produces stories which can be used to develop resources relating to person-centred education about the patient experience. Implications for practice: Stories constructed from raw narratives in the context of constructivism can provide a medium or an ‘end product’ for use in learning resource development. This can then contribute to educating students or health professionals about patients’ experiences

    It’s GIrls’ Day! What sketch maps show about girls’ spatial knowledge

The event caters to girls from Grades 7 – 10 as an opportunity to experience various jobs that might interest them in the future, typically within the STEM-disciplines. One of the performed activities was asking the girls who participated to draw a sketch map of an area they are familiar with. We are interested in finding out how girls externalize the environment they were told to draw. The activity also helps us understand how they organize their environmental knowledge through sketch maps. This descriptive work deviates from gender comparison of map-making by focusing only on girls. This paper allows us to understand differences of girls’ cognitive abilities based on what they have drawn on the map. The results showed that girls draw map ranging from egocentric pictorial representation with few details to survey structured map. More than 40% of the girls have included landmarks and streets outside the region of interest showing a more global view of the area. Landmarks frequently drawn showed visual, structural and cognitive characteristics. This study contributes to research related to better understanding of the cognitive abilities of young adults, particularly girls

    Program brief: HIV vulnerability and prevention needs of young female sex workers in Kumasi, Ghana

    This study was implemented by Boston University in collaboration with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology with support from the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the U.S. Agency for International Development under Project SEARCH Task Order No. GHH‐I‐00‐07‐00023‐00, beginning August 27, 2010. The content and views expressed here are the authors’ and do not necessarily reflect the opinion or policy of USAID or the U.S. Government.Adult HIV prevalence in Ghana in 2013 has been estimated at 1.31%.1 Among female sex workers (FSW), prevalence is, however, much higher at 12.9%, compared to 2.2% in the general female population. HIV prevalence among FSW in the Ashanti region is 13%, the second highest FSW prevalence after the Greater Accra Region (16.3%).2 Sex work plays a significant role in HIV transmission, with 2.4% of sex workers, 13.2% of male clients, and 22.2% of clients’ partners contributing to new HIV infections.2 While recent national and regional prevalence and behavior data on FSWs are available, little qualitative research has been published on sex workers in Kumasi, and specifically on younger sex workers. This qualitative study was conducted by Boston University’s Center for Global Health and Development and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Ghana. The study objectives were to: (1) investigate knowledge about and perceptions of HIV among young FSW in Kumasi, capital of the Ashanti region and second largest city in Ghana; (2) explore their HIV risk behaviors; and (3) identify their HIV prevention needs.     Efficient Relaxations for Dense CRFs with Sparse Higher Order Potentials

    Dense conditional random fields (CRFs) have become a popular framework for modelling several problems in computer vision such as stereo correspondence and multi-class semantic segmentation. By modelling long-range interactions, dense CRFs provide a labelling that captures finer detail than their sparse counterparts. Currently, the state-of-the-art algorithm performs mean-field inference using a filter-based method but fails to provide a strong theoretical guarantee on the quality of the solution. A question naturally arises as to whether it is possible to obtain a maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimate of a dense CRF using a principled method. Within this paper, we show that this is indeed possible. We will show that, by using a filter-based method, continuous relaxations of the MAP problem can be optimised efficiently using state-of-the-art algorithms. Specifically, we will solve a quadratic programming (QP) relaxation using the Frank-Wolfe algorithm and a linear programming (LP) relaxation by developing a proximal minimisation framework. By exploiting labelling consistency in the higher-order potentials and utilising the filter-based method, we are able to formulate the above algorithms such that each iteration has a complexity linear in the number of classes and random variables. The presented algorithms can be applied to any labelling problem using a dense CRF with sparse higher-order potentials. In this paper, we use semantic segmentation as an example application as it demonstrates the ability of the algorithm to scale to dense CRFs with large dimensions. We perform experiments on the Pascal dataset to indicate that the presented algorithms are able to attain lower energies than the mean-field inference method

    Decentralised combined heat and power in the German Ruhr Valley; assessment of factors blocking uptake and integration

    Background: In Germany, the energy system is undergoing reorganisation from a centralised system based on fossil fuels and nuclear power to a sustainable system based on decentralised production and consumption of energy, the so-called Energiewende. Recently, there has been more attention to improving energy efficiency in those regions where conventional energy production activities and energy-intensive industries are located, such as the Ruhr area. Although the potential for decentralised combined heat and power (CHP) units is high in this region, local action plans show only modest developments for this technology. In this paper, we address this issue by answering the following research question: Which factors block the uptake and integration of decentralised CHP in the German Ruhr area's energy system? Methods: The multilevel perspective (MLP) was used to analyse the state of system innovation in relation to the uptake and integration of decentralised CHP technology. Prior to the MLP analysis, a stakeholders' analysis was conducted to identify stakeholders' views, positions and experienced barriers regarding the uptake and integration of decentralised CHP technology. Data collection included review of text documents and conducting 11 interviews. Results: Due to many regime barriers blocking niche development, the uptake of decentralised CHP technology is limited. Identified barriers relate to lack of market services and mismatches with user preferences, (sectoral) policies and industrial interests. Conclusions: Observed barriers relate to (i) lack of market services such as financial means for making investments; (ii) user awareness such as unawareness and information deficit regarding the benefits of decentralised CHP to potential users, (iii) the presence of centralised district heating systems, (iv) policy issues such as lack of sufficient policies supporting diffusion of decentralised CHP units, legal stipulations from social housing policies that prevent housing cooperatives from becoming energy producers and district heating systems owned by public and private owners (via concessions contracts); (v) sector issues such as lack of skilledservice-providing companies; and (vi) industrial interested such as the vested interests of the coal and gasindustry. Moreover, many of the mentioned barriers seem interrelated, especially those concerning policy and finance available for making upfront investments

    The Economics of Regulations on Hen Housing in California

    Beginning January 1, 2015, conventional cage housing for egg-laying hens is scheduled to be prohibited in California. We consider the economic implications of the new hen housing regulations on the California shell egg industry. Our data show that egg production is more costly using noncage systems than conventional cages.     A randomized controlled trial of training in Motivational Interviewing for child protection.

    There has been interest in developing more evidence-based approaches to child and family social work in the UK in recent years. This study examines the impact of a skills development package of training and supervision in Motivational Interviewing (MI) on the skills of social workers and the engagement of parents through a randomized controlled trial. All workers in one local authority were randomly assigned to receive the package (n = 28) or control (n = 33). Families were then randomized to trained (n = 67) or untrained (n = 98) workers. Family meetings with the worker shortly after allocation were evaluated for MI skill. Research interviews gathered data including the WAI. Follow-up interviews 20 weeks later repeated the WAI, and other outcome measures including Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS) and rating of family life. Between group analysis found statistically significant difference in MI skills, though these were not substantial (2.49 in control, 2.91 MI trained, p = .049). There was no statistically significant difference between groups in any other outcome measures. The package of training and supervision did not create sufficient increase in MI skills to influence engagement or outcomes. Implications for understanding the relationship between skills, engagement and organizational change are discussed
