Fritzsch Texture in SUSY-SO(10) with Large Neutrino Mixing

Fritzsch's texture is imposed on {\em all} mass matrices in a SUSY-SO(10) via a family U(1)PQU(1)_{PQ} symmetry. The observed charged fermion parameters fix the ν\nu-masses and mixing, while the later are evolved from the GUT scale to low energies using the RG. Large sin22θ12\sin^2 2{\theta}_{12} results. As in a SUSY-GUT no intermediate scale is allowed, the RH-neutrino scale is the unification one and this gives in our model Δm1221010eV2\Delta m_{12}^2 \approx {10}^{-10} eV^2, in accordance with the vacuum oscillation solution to the solar-ν\nu puzzle.Comment: 10 pages (standard LaTeX, 3 figures included as postscript files), WU B 93-1

Junction formation by Zn(O,S) sputtering yields CIGSe-based cells with efficiencies exceeding 18%

In an effort to reduce the complexity and associated production costs of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGSe)-based solar cells, the commonly used sputtered undoped ZnO layer has been modified to eliminate the requirement for a dedicated buffer layer. After replacing the ZnO target with a mixed ZnO/ZnS target, efficient solar cells could be prepared by sputtering directly onto the as- grown CIGSe surface. This approach has now been tested with high-quality lab- scale glass/Mo/CIGSe substrates. An efficiency of 18.3% has been independently confirmed without any post-deposition annealing or light soaking

Retroviruses use CD169-mediated trans-infection of permissive lymphocytes to establish infection

Dendritic cells can capture and transfer retroviruses in vitro across synaptic cell-cell contacts to uninfected cells, a process called trans-infection. Whether trans-infection contributes to retroviral spread in vivo remains unknown. Here, we visualize how retroviruses disseminate in secondary lymphoid tissues of living mice. We demonstrate that murine leukemia virus (MLV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are first captured by sinus-lining macrophages. CD169/Siglec-1, an I-type lectin that recognizes gangliosides, captures the virus. MLV-laden macrophages then form long-lived synaptic contacts to trans-infect B-1 cells. Infected B-1 cells subsequently migrate into the lymph node to spread the infection through virological synapses. Robust infection in lymph nodes and spleen requires CD169, suggesting that a combination of fluid-based movement followed by CD169-dependent trans-infection can contribute to viral spread

The minority of three-game: an experimental and theoretical analysis

    Get PDF
We report experimental results on the minority of three-game, where three players choose one of two alternatives and the most rewarding alternative is the one chosen by a single player. This coordination game has many asymmetric equilibria in pure strategies that are non-strict and payoff-asymmetric and a unique symmetric mixed strategy equilibrium in which each player’s behavior is based on the toss of a fair coin. This straightforward behavior is predicted by equilibrium selection, impulse-balance equilibrium, and payoff-sampling equilibrium. Experimental participants rely on various decision rules, and only a quarter of them perfectly randomize

Exposure assessment of methylmercury in samples of the BfR MEAL Study

The BfR MEAL Study is the first German total diet study and will establish a representative and comprehensive database for dietary exposure assessment in Germany. The present study reports first results of the BfR MEAL Study regarding methylmercury in fish, seafood and mushrooms. In total, 34 MEAL foods were purchased nationally or regionally according to a defined sampling plan, prepared in a representative way for German households, pooled into 49 samples, homogenized and subjected to ICP-MS analysis. Dogfish, tuna, ocean perch, halibut and eel were the fish species with highest MeHg concentrations, while levels in mushrooms and mushroom products had markedly lower MeHg levels. Exposure was estimated by matching the present results with consumption data at appropriate levels of food group aggregation. MeHg exposure for adult high consumers (P 95) exceeded the tolerable weekly intake recommended by the European Food Safety Authority in two age groups (14–17 and 18–24 years). In children, no age group exceeded the recommended tolerable weekly intake. Regional samples differed only slightly in MeHg levels. The differences in exposure found in four regions of Germany were influenced by consumption habits rather than MeHg level in the investigated food

The Nephrocheck Bedside System for Detecting Stage 3 Acute Kidney Injury After Open Thoracoabdominal Aortic Repair

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication after complex aortic procedures and it is associated with relevant mortality and morbidity. Biomarkers for early and specific AKI detection are lacking. The aim of this work is to investigate the reliability of the NephroCheck bedside system for diagnosing stage 3 AKI following open aortic surgery. In this prospective, multicenter, observational study,- https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04087161 -we included 45 patients undergoing open thoracoabdominal aortic repair. AKI risk (AKIRisk-Index) was calculated from urine samples at 5 timepoints: baseline, immediately postoperatively and at 12, 24, 48, and 72 h post-surgery. AKIs were classified according to the KDIGO criteria. Contributing factors were identified in univariable and multivariable logistic regression. Predictive ability was assessed with the area under the receiver operator curve (ROCAUC). Among 31 patients (68.8%) that developed AKIs, 21 (44.9%) developed stage-3 AKIs, which required dialysis. AKIs were correlated with increased in-hospital mortality (p = .006), respiratory complications (p \u3c .001), sepsis (p \u3c .001), and multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (p \u3c .001). The AKIRisk-Index showed reliable diagnostic accuracy starting at 24 h post-surgery (ROCAUC: .8056, p = .001). In conclusion, starting at 24 h after open aortic repair, the NephroCheck system showed adequate diagnostic accuracy for detecting the patients at risk for stage 3 AKIs
