A texture-processing model of the 'visual sense of number'
It has been suggested that numerosity is an elementary quality of perception, similar to colour. If so (and despite considerable investigation), its mechanism remains unknown. Here, we show that observers require on average a massive difference of approximately 40% to detect a change in the number of objects that vary irrelevantly in blur, contrast and spatial separation, and that some naive observers require even more than this. We suggest that relative numerosity is a type of texture discrimination and that a simple model computing the contrast energy at fine spatial scales in the image can perform at least as well as human observers. Like some human observers, this mechanism finds it harder to discriminate relative numerosity in two patterns with different degrees of blur, but it still outpaces the human. We propose energy discrimination as a benchmark model against which more complex models and new data can be tested

Common Cortical Loci Are Activated during Visuospatial Interpolation and Orientation Discrimination Judgements
There is a wealth of literature on the role of short-range interactions between low-level orientation-tuned filters in the perception of discontinuous contours. However, little is known about how spatial information is integrated across more distant regions of the visual field in the absence of explicit local orientation cues, a process referred to here as visuospatial interpolation (VSI). To examine the neural correlates of VSI high field functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to study brain activity while observers either judged the alignment of three Gabor patches by a process of interpolation or discriminated the local orientation of the individual patches. Relative to a fixation baseline the two tasks activated a largely over-lapping network of regions within the occipito-temporal, occipito-parietal and frontal cortices. Activated clusters specific to the orientation task (orientation>interpolation) included the caudal intraparietal sulcus, an area whose role in orientation encoding per se has been hotly disputed. Surprisingly, there were few task-specific activations associated with visuospatial interpolation (VSI>orientation) suggesting that largely common cortical loci were activated by the two experimental tasks. These data are consistent with previous studies that suggest higher level grouping processes -putatively involved in VSI- are automatically engaged when the spatial properties of a stimulus (e.g. size, orientation or relative position) are used to make a judgement

Are socioenvironmental factors associated with psychotic symptoms in people with first-episode psychosis? A cross-sectional study of a West London clinical sample.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether neighbourhood-level socioenvironmental factors including deprivation and inequality predict variance in psychotic symptoms after controlling for individual-level demographics. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was employed. SETTING: Data were originally collected from secondary care services within the UK boroughs of Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham, Wandsworth, Kingston, Richmond, Merton, Sutton and Hounslow as part of the West London First-Episode Psychosis study. PARTICIPANTS: Complete case analyses were undertaken on 319 participants who met the following inclusion criteria: aged 16 years or over, resident in the study's catchment area, experiencing a first psychotic episode, with fewer than 12 weeks' exposure to antipsychotic medication and sufficient command of English to facilitate assessment. OUTCOME MEASURES: Symptom dimension scores, derived from principal component analyses of the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms and Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms, were regressed on neighbourhood-level predictors, including population density, income deprivation, income inequality, social fragmentation, social cohesion, ethnic density and ethnic fragmentation, using multilevel regression. While age, gender and socioeconomic status were included as individual-level covariates, data on participant ethnicity were not available. RESULTS: Higher income inequality was associated with lower negative symptom scores (coefficient=-1.66, 95% CI -2.86 to -0.46, p<0.01) and higher levels of ethnic segregation were associated with lower positive symptom scores (coefficient=-2.32, 95% CI -4.17 to -0.48, p=0.01) after adjustment for covariates. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide further evidence that particular characteristics of the environment may be linked to specific symptom clusters in psychosis. Longitudinal studies are required to begin to tease apart the underlying mechanisms involved as well as the causal direction of such associations
Visual population receptive fields in people with schizophrenia have reduced inhibitory surrounds
People with schizophrenia (SZ) experience abnormal visual perception on a range of visual tasks, which have been linked to abnormal synaptic transmission and an imbalance between cortical excitation and inhibition. However differences in the underlying architecture of visual cortex neurons, which might explain these visual anomalies, have yet to be reported in vivo. Here, we probe the neural basis of these deficits by using functional MRI (fMRI) and population receptive field (pRF) mapping to infer properties of visually responsive neurons in people with SZ. We employed a Difference-of-Gaussian (DoG) model to capture the centre-surround configuration of the pRF, providing critical information about the spatial scale of the pRFs inhibitory surround. Our analysis reveals that SZ is associated with reduced pRF size in early retinotopic visual cortex as well as a reduction in size and depth of the inhibitory surround in V1, V2 and V4. We consider how reduced inhibition might explain the diverse range of visual deficits reported in SZ. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: People with schizophrenia (SZ) experience abnormal perception on a range of visual tasks, which has been linked to abnormal synaptic transmission and an imbalance between cortical excitation/inhibition. An imbalance between cortical excitation and inhibition could drive such a change in the centre-surround pRF configuration, and ultimately explain the range of visual deficits experienced in SZ

The component structure of the scales for the assessment of positive and negative symptoms in first-episode psychosis and its dependence on variations in analytic methods.
A secondary analysis was undertaken on Scales for the Assessment of Positive and Negative Symptoms (SAPS/SANS) data from 345 first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients gathered in the West London FEP study. The purpose of this study was to determine: (i) the component structure of these measures in FEP (primary analyses), and (ii) the dependence of any findings in these primary analyses on variations in analytic methods. Symptom ratings were exposed to data reduction methods and the effects of the following manipulations ascertained: (i) level of analysis (individual symptom vs. global symptom severity ratings), (ii) extraction method (principal component vs. exploratory factor analysis) and (iii) retention method (scree test vs. Kaiser criterion). Whilst global ratings level analysis rendered the classic triad of psychotic syndromes (positive, negative and disorganisation), symptom level analyses revealed a hierarchical structure, with 11 first-order components subsumed by three second-order components, which also mapped on to this syndrome triad. These results were robust across data reduction but not component retention methods, suggesting that discrepancies in the literature regarding the component structure of the SAPS/SANS partly reflect the level of analysis and component retention method used. Transient tritanopia in migraine: evidence for a large-field retinal abnormality in blue-yellow opponent pathways
purpose. To determine whether the magnitude of transient tritanopia (TT) differs between migraine and control groups. TT is a retinal phenomenon characterized by a paradoxical reduction in sensitivity to short-wavelength (purple) stimuli after extinction of long-wavelength (yellow) adapting displays. A group difference in the magnitude of TT would provide evidence for a retinal contribution to the S-cone–specific color-processing abnormalities that have been reported in migraine.
methods. Thirty-two migraineurs and 32 age- and sex-matched control participants were tested with a four-alternative, forced-choice procedure to determine S-cone increment and decrement detection thresholds before and after adaptation to a long-wavelength (yellow) display and a neutral (white) display. Migraine history, migraine triggers, and pattern sensitivity were also assessed.
results. Both groups’ detection thresholds for increment (purple) S-cone stimuli were increased after extinction of the long-wavelength adapting display compared with the neutral display, demonstrating TT. This loss of sensitivity was significantly greater in the migraine group. In contrast, loss of sensitivity to decrement (yellow) S-cone stimuli was less marked and did not differ between the groups. The magnitude of TT correlated positively with indices of pattern sensitivity and susceptibility to visually triggered migraines but not with migraine history.
conclusions. These results demonstrate that abnormalities in a specific retinal circuit contribute to decreased short-wavelength sensitivity after adaptation in migraine. As thresholds did not correlate with indices of migraine history, it is unlikely that this finding reflects cumulative damage induced by repeated migraine episodes
Emotion recognition bias depends on stimulus morphing strategy
Emotion recognition is vital for social interactions, and atypical (or biased) emotion recognition has been linked to mental health disorders including depression and anxiety. However, biases in emotion recognition vary across studies, and it is unclear whether this reflects genuine group differences in psychological processes underlying emotion recognition or differences in methodologies. One common method to measure biases in emotion recognition involves morphing a face between two emotional expressions in different ratios and asking participants to categorise the faces as belonging to one of the two emotion categories (‘direct-morphing’ method). However, this method creates morphed faces that are not ecologically valid. Alternatively, faces may be morphed through a neutral expression (‘morphing-through-neutral’ method), which is more ecologically valid since emotional expressions usually start from a neutral face. To compare these two approaches, we measured emotion recognition biases using two morphing techniques in 136 participants who also completed measures of anxiety (GAD-7) and depression (PHQ-9). Biases obtained using the two methods differed significantly: In the direct-morphing method, participants perceived the central 50% happy/50% angry face as slightly happy, whereas in the morphing-through-neutral method the neutral face was seen as angry. There were no associations between biases and depression or anxiety scores for either morphing method. This study is the first to directly compare emotion recognition biases obtained using two different morphing methods and is a first step towards reconciling discrepancies in the literature. The association between materialism and perceived relationship quality in young adults
This study aimed to determine how materialism is related to relationship quality, as conceptualised across multiple levels, including an individual’s relationship to self (self-esteem and attachment), relationships with others (family, peers and intimate partners) and relationships in the broader social context (online and community). Young adults between 18 and 30 years of age (N = 205) completed an online self-report questionnaire that assessed materialism, self-esteem and attachment style, as well as a number of relationship variables of interest. Data were analysed using bivariate correlations and regression analyses. Lower self-esteem, anxious attachment and poorer quality of family relationships predicted higher levels of materialism (p <.05), even after controlling for demographic and socio-economic variables (p <.05), with self-esteem showing the strongest association. These findings were interpreted within a developmental framework that posits a central role for the individual’s early relationships and immediate environment in the etiology of materialism, although future longitudinal studies are needed to test this theory explicitly
Individual- and neighbourhood-level predictors of psychotic symptom dimensions in West London.
Part one is a systematic review of the association between income inequality and adult mental health at the subnational level. It considers two alternative hypotheses: (i) the Income Inequality Hypothesis (IIH), which predicts an association between higher inequality and poorer mental health, and (ii) the Mixed Neighbourhood Hypothesis (MNH), which predicts a reversed association, i.e. between higher inequality and better mental health. Part two is a quantitative, empirical study into the Individual- and neighbourhood-level predictors of psychotic symptom dimensions. It involves a secondary analysis of data originally gathered from a group of participants presenting to services in West London with First Episode Psychosis (FEP). Part three is a critical appraisal of the process of undertaking the research described in parts one and two. It includes a series of reflections on various stages of the research process, in addition to a consideration of some of the broader questions and issues it raised
