The Organization of New Service Development in the USA and UK

We understand a great deal about the organization and management of new product development in the manufacturing sector, but we know relatively little about how applicable this research and practice is to the service sector. In this paper we introduce and test a framework for managing new product development in services. This framework is derived and tested by analyzing 108 service firms in a combined US and UK dataset, and then each national sub-sample separately. Our results generally support the predictive capability of the framework, and suggest that the development strategy, processes, organization and tools derived from manufacturing, specially those of concurrent engineering, are applicable to services. Organizing for Service Innovation: Best-Practice or Configurations?

In this paper we contrast the notions of best-practice and configurations contingent on environmental conditions. The analysis draws upon our study of 38 UK and 70 US service firms which includes an assessment of the organization, processes, tools and systems used, and how these factors influence variation in the development and delivery of new services. The best-practice framework is found to be predictive of performance improvement in samples in both the UK and USA, but the model better fits the USA than UK data. We analyze the UK data to identify alternative configurations. Four system configurations are identified: project-based; mass customization; cellular; and organic-technical. Each has a different combination of organization, processes, tools and systems which offer different performance advantages. The results provide an opportunity for updating the typologies of operations and adapting them to include services, and begin to challenge the notion of any universal 'best practice' management or organization of new product or service development.service industry, performance improvement, best-practice, alternative system configurations

Employer and Employee Rights and Responsibilities in a Networked Office

Internet-connectivity is having a profound impact on the workplace. Employees use it to access data and information from global sources, communicate with others instantaneously regardless of physical proximity, work anytime, anywhere, so long as they have a digital device connected to the Internet. Alternatively, the technology can be used to subject coworkers to objectionable material, violate workers\u27 privacy, and convey the appearance of working when actually abusing Internet resources. This article discusses the existing laws regarding employee usage of an employer\u27s Internet resources and employer monitoring of that usage. Thus, it provides a foundation for understanding a body of law that is bound to evolve at an increasingly rapid rate and must be used by every organization to guide its employment and IT policies

Assessing the Extent of IT Integration Across The Business Curriculum

This paper describes a methodology for assessing the extent to which computer technologies have been integrated across the business/management curriculum so as to enhance learning process and outcomes. The assessment was motivated by the need to: Inform interested individuals such as current and potential students, prospective employers, administrative/budget personnel, and accrediting bodies about the extent to which these technologies are being taught and used; and Increase the learning efficiency of the integration effort by ensuring that computer-based learning tasks are properly sequenced across the curriculum, so that students develop the necessary computing skills and ·knowledge in a timely manner. Data will be collected using a web-based survey instrument that feeds responses into a database for analysis. The survey \u27s design is the focus of this presentation

Innovation management challenges: from fads to fundamentals

Innovation management is inherently inter-disciplinary, but it is much more than simply applying business and management disciplines to innovation, and over time the field has developed a distinct body of knowledge. However, in this paper we argue that the field of innovation management has failed to fully-benefit from the proliferation of relevant research because much of this work has not been sufficiently coherent and cumulative. One reason we for this, we propose, is the propensity to follow and fit research and publications into contemporary fads, rather than to ground work in more fundamental themes and challenges. We present two examples of such fads, open innovation and business model innovation, to illustrate the trend. Finally, we suggest some more fundamental integrating themes and management challenges

[EDITORIAL] 20TH Special Issue For The ISPIM

Welcome to the 20th Special Issue of the International Journal of Innovation Management (IJIM) for the International Society for Professional Innovation Management (ISPIM). This draws upon papers submitted to the ISPIM Innovation Conference at Stockholm in June 2018. From this pool of 250 potential papers, nine were selected for further review, and the five papers published in this issue are the results of subsequent review and revision. The foci of the papers range from individual innovator characteristics, through organisational factors, to the ecosystem in which the firm is embedded, demonstrating the need to adopt an integrated approach to fully understand and practice innovation (Tidd and Bessant, 2018)
