    An Eulerian Approach to the Analysis of Krause's Consensus Models

    Abstract. In this paper we analyze a class of multi-agent consensus dynamical systems inspired by Krause’s original model. As in Krause’s, the basic assumption is the so-called bounded confidence: two agents can influence each other only when their state values are below a given distance threshold R. We study the system under an Eulerian point of view considering (possibly continuous) probability distributions of agents and we present original convergence results. The limit distribution is always necessarily a convex combination of delta functions at least R far apart from each other: in other terms these models are locally aggregating. The Eulerian perspective provides the natural framework for designing a numerical algorithm, by which we obtain several simulations in 1 and 2 dimensions

    Latex allergy in dentistry: clinical cases report

    Generally natural rubber latex (NRL) allergy is detected after some exposition to the material. As NRL is com- monly found in different materials used daily in dental clinic, the allergy can be manifested in the pediatric dentistry clinic. The first clinical manifestation can be smooth but also severe, therefore it is important to know different manifestations and how to prevent them. Objective: Report two clinical cases of natural rubber latex allergy in children and to present the safety measures that must be taken during clinical assistance, as using metallic saliva ejector, vinyl gloves for the treatment procedures and as an option to rubber dam. Cases Report: Case 1- Patient presented body swellings after contact with latex. Case 2- Patient presented skin eruptions and urticaria after contact with balloons suggesting possible NRL allergy. Conclusions: The precautions must always be taken during the dental treatment of natural rubber latex allergic patients in order to achieve satisfactory results by avoiding dermatitis or even anaphylactic shock

    A Hybrid Sensorless Observer for the Robust Global Asymptotic Flux Reconstruction of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines

    We propose a hybrid sensorless observer for permanent magnet synchronous machines with global asymptotic stability guarantees. Exploiting the constraint of the rotor flux on a circle of unknown radius, we design an integrator system with periodic jumps triggered by a clock to generate a linear regression containing the flux estimation error. Then, a normalized projected gradient descent identifier provides the observer estimates. For the closed-loop system, it is shown that there exists a robustly globally asymptotically stable compact attractor, which, additionally, ensures zero estimation error if appropriate Persistency of Excitation (PE) conditions are satisfied. In this respect, sufficient conditions ensuring PE are provided for the angular speed and the clock period

    This protocol is an amendment of the previous study conducted by Sargeant et al. (2019) on the same topic. The description below will mainly focus on modifications provided. This protocol defines the methodology of the systematic review and meta-analysis to address the following PICO question: “In broilers at risk of colibacillosis, does antibiotic treatment versus no antibiotic treatment result in higher FCR/fewer condemnations/lower mortality/total antibiotic use?”. The specific PICO elements are: 1. Population: Broilers (including the whole production chain). 2. Intervention: Any antibiotic licensed for use in chickens in ovo, by injection, in feed, or in water at doses consistent with therapeutic or prophylactic use. Eligible antibiotic include any antibiotic for use in treating or preventing colibacillosis in poultry included in Sargeant et al. (2019) and the OIE list of antibiotic agents of veterinary importance. 3. Comparator: Placebo or untreated control group or an alternative antibiotic treatment. 4. Outcomes: Mortality, Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), condemnations due to colibacillosis at the slaughterhouse, and total antibiotic use

    Exploring possible selves in a first-year physics foundation class: Engaging students by establishing relevance

    Students often complain that they cannot see the relevance of what they are being taught in foundation physics classes. While revising and adjusting the curriculum and teaching are important, this study suggests it might also be useful to help students view their learning in relation to their future career aspirations. This paper reports on a study conducted with first-year students enrolled in a compulsory foundation physics unit with a history of low pass rates.Working within a “possible selves” framework, activities were designed to help students position their learning in relation to possible future lives and careers. Two cohorts of students (N ¼ 93) engaged in an intensive workshop comprising multiple activities relating to self and career. Self-reflection worksheets were analyzed using content analysis. The results indicate that students experience immediate benefits from these activities through self-reflection on the current self, future possible professional selves, and the role of current studies in narrowing the gap between the two

    Detoxification: A Novel Function of BRCA1 in Tumor Suppression?

    Our studies found that BRCA1 levels negatively correlate with DNA adducts induced by Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP). Pulse-chase experiments showed that the increase in BaP-induced DNA adducts in BRCA1 knockdown cells may not be associated with BRCA1’s function in nucleotide excision repair activity; rather, it may be associated with its function in modulating transcriptional regulation. BRCA1 knockdown in MCF-10A cells significantly attenuated the induction of CYP1A1 following BaP treatment indicating that the increase in BaP-induced adducts in BRCA1 knockdown cells is not CYP1A1 dependent. However, our study shows that BRCA1 defective cells may still be able to biotransform BaP by regulating other CYP enzymes, including CYP1B1. Knockdown of BRCA1 also severely affected the expression levels of two types of uridine diphosphate glucorunyltransferase (UGT1A1 and UGT1A9) and NRF2. Both UGTs are known as BaP-specific detoxification enzymes, and NRF2 is a master regulator of antioxidant and detoxification genes. Thus, we concluded that the increased amount of BaP-induced DNA adducts in BRCA1 knockdown cells is strongly associated with its loss of functional detoxification. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assay revealed that BRCA1 is recruited to the promoter/enhancer sequences of UGT1A1, UGT1A9, and NRF2. Regulation of UGT1A1 and UGT1A9 expression showed that the induction of DNA adducts by BaP is directly affected by their expression levels. Finally, overexpression of UGTs, NRF2, or ARNT significantly decreased the amount of BaP-induced adducts in BRCA1-deficient cells. Overall, our results suggest that BRCA1 protects cells by reducing the amount of BaP-induced DNA adducts possibly via transcriptional activation of detoxification gene expression

    Lay Summary: What does this mean for patients? Inflammatory arthritis includes conditions causing swollen and painful joints. The main types are rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, axial spondyloarthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. It is common, affecting over 1 in 100 adults and 4 in 10 000 children and young people in the UK. Despite the availability of effective medicines to reduce joint inflammation, many people with inflammatory arthritis continue to experience daily pain. This has a great impact on their lives. They often receive strong pain medicines called opioids, despite little evidence that they help pain in inflammatory arthritis. The British Society for Rheumatology is the UK’s main medical society for healthcare professionals providing care to people with inflammatory arthritis. It provides guidelines that recommend how healthcare professionals can best treat people with specific conditions. This paper outlines the plan to develop the first guideline from the British Society for Rheumatology about how pain should be managed in people with inflammatory arthritis. It will be developed by a group of people from many backgrounds (including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, podiatrists, occupational therapists, psychologists, pharmacists and people with inflammatory arthritis) and will be based on the best available research, identified by reviewing published studies in a systematic way
