Migration, Human Capital Formation and the Beneficial Brain Drain Hypothesis: A Note
The recent brain drain literature suggests that migration of highly skilled people can be beneficial for a country as it gives incentives to form additional human capital. We criticise this claim by developing a career concerns model and propose that migration opportunity as an incentive mechanism is unreliable. In addition, we show that when an individual forms two types of human capital, increased migration opportunity for one type has a negative effect on the formation of the other type. The economic benefit and full policy implications of the findings were not addressed in this paper
MiR-205-5p inhibition by locked nucleic acids impairs metastatic potential of breast cancer cells
Mir-205 plays an important role in epithelial biogenesis and in mammary gland development but its role in cancer still remains controversial depending on the specific cellular context and target genes. We have previously reported that miR-205-5p is upregulated in breast cancer stem cells targeting ERBB pathway and leading to targeted therapy resistance. Here we show that miR-205-5p regulates tumorigenic properties of breast cancer cells, as well as epithelial to mesenchymal transition. Silencing this miRNA in breast cancer results in reduced tumor growth and metastatic spreading in mouse models. Moreover, we show that miR-205-5p knock-down can be obtained with the use of specific locked nucleic acids oligonucleotides in vivo suggesting a future potential use of this approach in therapy
Sicilia e, probabilmente, d’Europa.
In seguito,
anche Aristotele e Plinio esaltano il gusto
unico di questo formaggio. In particolare,
leggermente piccante e l’incantevole profumo
di pascolo. Il Pecorino Siciliano DOP \ue8
un formaggio a pasta dura, semicotto, prodotto
con latte intero crudo di pecora. L’areale
Sicilia.
olio. La pasta \ue8 compatta, di colore bianco
o giallo paglierino, con occhiatura scarsa. Il
sapore \ue8 piccante e caratteristico, l’aroma \ue8
intenso. La stagionatura minima prevista dal
disciplinare \ue8 di 4 mesi.
Il Pecorino Siciliano ha acquisito la certificazione
DO nel 1955 e la DOP nel 1996 con
regolamento CE n. 1107/96 della Commissione
del 12 giugno 1996 (Gazzetta Ufficiale
Comunit\ue0 Europea L 148 del 21/6/1996). Attualmente,
le attivit\ue0 di promozione, valorizzazione
e vigilanza sono affidate al Consorzio
di tutela del Pecorino Siciliano DOP,
che \ue8 stato riconosciuto dal ministero delle
Politiche agricole, alimentari e forestali (Mi-

Metazoans of redoxcline sediments in Mediterranean deep-sea hypersaline anoxic basins
Background: The deep-sea hypersaline anoxic basins (DHABs) of the Mediterranean (water depth similar to 3500 m) are some of the most extreme oceanic habitats known. Brines of DHABs are nearly saturated with salt, leading many to suspect they are uninhabitable for eukaryotes. While diverse bacterial and protistan communities are reported from some DHAB haloclines and brines, loriciferans are the only metazoan reported to inhabit the anoxic DHAB brines. Our goal was to further investigate metazoan communities in DHAB haloclines and brines.
Results: We report observations from sediments of three DHAB (Urania, Discovery, L'Atalante) haloclines, comparing these to observations from sediments underlying normoxic waters of typical Mediterranean salinity. Due to technical difficulties, sampling of the brines was not possible. Morphotype analysis indicates nematodes are the most abundant taxon; crustaceans, loriciferans and bryozoans were also noted. Among nematodes, Daptonema was the most abundant genus; three morphotypes were noted with a degree of endemicity. The majority of rRNA sequences were from planktonic taxa, suggesting that at least some individual metazoans were preserved and inactive. Nematode abundance data, in some cases determined from direct counts of sediments incubated in situ with CellTracker (TM) Green, was patchy but generally indicates the highest abundances in either normoxic control samples or in upper halocline samples; nematodes were absent or very rare in lower halocline samples. Ultrastructural analysis indicates the nematodes in L'Atalante normoxic control sediments were fit, while specimens from L'Atalante upper halocline were healthy or had only recently died and those from the lower halocline had no identifiable organelles. Loriciferans, which were only rarely encountered, were found in both normoxic control samples as well as in Discovery and L'Atalante haloclines. It is not clear how a metazoan taxon could remain viable under this wide range of conditions.
Conclusions: We document a community of living nematodes in normoxic, normal saline deep-sea Mediterranean sediments and in the upper halocline portions of the DHABs. Occurrences of nematodes in mid-halocline and lower halocline samples did not provide compelling evidence of a living community in those zones. The possibility of a viable metazoan community in brines of DHABs is not supported by our data at this time
Use of weaning concentrate in the feeding suckling kids: effects on meat quality
The effect of a feeding supplementation with starter concentrate on “Capretto” meat production and its qualitative characteristics was investigated. The results showed that the effect of concentrate supplementation did not influence the slaughter weight, slaughter and dissection data, tissue composition and meat chemical composition of the pelvic limb. No differences were found for rheological characteristics of LD meat, except cohesiveness values, which were higher in the concentrate group kids
The quality of Valle del Belice sheep’s milk and cheese produced in the hot summer season in Sicily
In response to the growing consumer demand for fresh cheese in summer,
this investigation was aimed to evaluate the chemical and microbiological
characteristics of sheep’s milk and cheese produced in Sicily in the hot summer months.
A total of 810 bulk milk samples collected from 17 farms rearing ewes of the Valle del
Belice breed were analysed for chemical composition, somatic cell count, total bacterial
count and clotting parameters. Samples (n=18) of Protected Designation of Origin
Vastedda della valle del Belice cheese produced in six dairies were collected in
summer, autumn and spring and analysed for chemical composition, microbiological
profile and fatty acid (FA) composition. Univariate and multivariate analyses were
performed to assess variations by season. Sheep’s milk produced in the summer had
higher fat and casein contents, less lactose and urea and slightly higher total bacterial
count and, similar to milk produced in winter, had a weaker clotting ability. Vastedda
cheese produced in spring had less thermophilic lactococci and a high rumenic acid
content. Cheese produced in summer had more fat; less saturated FA; and more linoleic
acid, monounsaturated FA and omega-3 polyunsaturated FA. A dual approach to data
analysis revealed a strong influence of production season on bulk milk and Vastedda
cheese characteristics due to climate conditions and ewes’ feeding regimen. Although
this study provides evidence of the good nutritional properties of summer sheep’s
cheese, management and feeding strategies could aim to further improve the quality of
milk and cheese produced in the summer months
Polarization Response in InAs Quantum Dots: Theoretical Correlation between Composition and Electronic Properties
III-V growth and surface conditions strongly influence the physical structure
and resulting optical properties of self-assembled quantum dots (QDs). Beyond
the design of a desired active optical wavelength, the polarization response of
QDs is of particular interest for optical communications and quantum
information science. Previous theoretical studies based on a pure InAs QD model
failed to reproduce experimentally observed polarization properties. In this
work, multi-million atom simulations are performed to understand the
correlation between chemical composition and polarization properties of QDs. A
systematic analysis of QD structural parameters leads us to propose a two layer
composition model, mimicking In segregation and In-Ga intermixing effects. This
model, consistent with mostly accepted compositional findings, allows to
accurately fit the experimental PL spectra. The detailed study of QD morphology
parameters presented here serves as a tool for using growth dynamics to
engineer the strain field inside and around the QD structures, allowing tuning
of the polarization response.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures; accepted for publication in IOP Nanotechnology

Investigation by raman spectroscopy of the decomposition process of HKUST-1 upon exposure to air
We report an experimental investigation by Raman spectroscopy of the decomposition process of Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) HKUST-1 upon exposure to air moisture (T=300 K, 70% relative humidity). The data collected here are compared with the indications obtained from a model of the process of decomposition of this material proposed in literature. In agreement with that model, the reported Raman measurements indicate that for exposure times longer than 20 days relevant irreversible processes take place, which are related to the occurrence of the hydrolysis of Cu-O bonds. These processes induce small but detectable variations of the peak positions and intensities of the main Raman bands of the material, which can be related to Cu-Cu, Cu-O, and O-C-O stretching modes. The critical analyses of these changes have permitted us to obtain a more detailed description of the process of decomposition taking place in HKUST-1 upon interaction with moisture. Furthermore, the reported Raman data give further strong support to the recently proposed model of decomposition of HKUST-1, contributing significantly to the development of a complete picture of the properties of this considerable deleterious effect
Anti-Listeria activity of lactic acid bacteria in two traditional Sicilian cheeses
Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogen frequently found in dairy products, and its growth is difficult to control. Bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS), produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB), having proven in vitro anti-Listeria activity, could provide an innovative approach to control L. monocytogenes; however, this application needs to be evaluated in vivo. In this study, twenty LAB strains isolated from different Sicilian dairy environments were tested for control of growth of L. monocytogenes in three different experimental trials. First, raw and UHT milk were inoculated with LAB strains alone, and LAB strains mixed with L. monocytogenes. Second, mini-cheeses containing LAB and/or L. monocytogenes were produced. Third, two traditional Sicilian cheeses inoculated with a multi-strain LAB mixture combined with L. monocytogenes were produced. The addition of BLIS produced by LAB to milk and in mini-cheese production was unable to inhibit the growth of L. monocytogenes. However, an anti-Listeria effect was observed in the Pecorino Siciliano cheeses, where, after 15 days of ripening, the cheeses with added LAB had fewer L. monocytogenes compared to the control cheeses with no added LAB, while in the Vastedda della valle del Bel cheeses, the multi-strain LAB mixture completely prevented the growth of L. monocytogenes
