    JWST Lifting System

    Get PDF
A document describes designing, building, testing, and certifying a customized crane (Lifting Device LD) with a strong back (cradle) to facilitate the installation of long wall panels and short door panels for the GHe phase of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The LD controls are variable-frequency drive controls designed to be adjustable for very slow and very-short-distance movements throughout the installation. The LD has a lift beam with an electric actuator attached at the end. The actuator attaches to a rectangular strong back (cradle) for lifting the long wall panels and short door panels from a lower angle into the vertical position inside the chamber, and then rotating around the chamber for installation onto the existing ceiling and floor. The LD rotates 360 (in very small increments) in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. Eight lifting pads are on the top ring with 2-in. (.5-cm) eye holes spaced evenly around the ring to allow for the device to be suspended by three crane hoists from the top of the chamber. The LD is operated by remote controls that allow for a single, slow mode for booming the load in and out, with slow and very slow modes for rotating the load

Ka-band MMIC microstrip array for high rate communications

In a recent technology assessment of alternative communication systems for the space exploration initiative (SEI), Ka-band (18 to 40 GHz) communication technology was identified to meet the mission requirements of telecommunication, navigation, and information management. Compared to the lower frequency bands, Ka-band antennas offer higher gain and broader bandwidths; thus, they are more suitable for high data rate communications. Over the years, NASA has played an important role in monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) phased array technology development, and currently, has an ongoing contract with Texas Instrument (TI) to develop a modular Ka-band MMIC microstrip subarray (NAS3-25718). The TI contract emphasizes MMIC integration technology development and stipulates using existing MMIC devices to minimize the array development cost. The objective of this paper is to present array component technologies and integration techniques used to construct the subarray modules

A modular family of phosphine-phosphoramidite ligands and their hydroformylation catalysts : steric tuning impacts upon the coordination geometry of trigonal bipyramidal complexes of type [Rh(H)(CO)2(P^P*)]

The authors thank the Eastman Chemical Company for funding.Four new phosphine-phosphoramidite bidentate ligands have been synthesised and studied in rhodium-catalysed hydroformylation. Variable temperature NMR studies have been used along with HPIR to investigate the coordination mode of the trigonal bipyramidal complexes formed from [Rh(acac)(CO)2], ligand and syngas. It was found that small changes to the ligand structure have a large effect on the geometry of the active catalytic species. The rhodium catalysts of these new ligands were found to give unusually high iso-selectivity in the hydroformylation of propene and 1-octene.PostprintPeer reviewe

A Case for the Decriminalization of Simple Possession of Narcotics in Mississippi

    Get PDF
Through its incarceration of simple possession offenders, Mississippi is failing to acknowledge the severity of addiction and importance of mental health. In this paper, I will examine Mississippi’s history of opinion and policy on drug use. In order to gain a better understanding of addiction and Mississippi’s criminal justice system, I interview several individuals with experience in varying aspects of these issues. Mississippi has one of the highest rates of incarceration in the United States, with stringent laws regarding the possession of narcotics. Mississippi’s mental health resources have been deemed unconstitutionally deficient on more than one occasion, and addicts are receiving inadequate care due to a combination of these two factors. In order to remedy these shortfalls, I recommend a full-scale decriminalization of simple possession of narcotics in Mississippi, with an expansion of mental health resources. I also emphasize the need for educational measures on substance abuse, addiction, and mental health, in order to end the negative stigma towards these issues and improve overall public health

The Decision and the Debate: Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    Get PDF
Abstract provided by the repository. This thesis examines the historiography of why we dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It continues with original research on Henry Stimson and Atomic Diplomacy, and concludes with the creation of several lesson plans for High School students, tied to specific NYS Social Studies Learning Standards. The first lesson is designed to have students learn about the historical controversy surrounding the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Using critical thinking and analysis, they are to reflect upon what they know and feel about the bombings, analyze what the textbooks say about them, research the differing historical perspectives, and write a passage that both provides information about the bombings and covers the historical controversy behind them. The second lesson is designed to teach students about the historical controversy surrounding the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Using critical thinking and analysis, they are to reflect upon what they know about the bombings, examine how the exhibit presented them and why it stirred controversy, research the differing historical perspectives, and produce a proposal for a revised exhibit that both provides information about the events and covers the historical controversy behind them. The thesis concludes with several resources for teachers to use.SUNY BrockportEducation and Human DevelopmentMaster of Science in Education (MSEd)Education and Human Development Master's These

Potential Security Vulnerabilities in Raspberry Pi Devices with Mitigation Strategies

    Get PDF
For this research project I used a Raspberry Pi device and conducted online research to investigate potential security vulnerabilities along with mitigation strategies. I configured the Raspberry Pi by using the proper peripherals such as an HDMI cord, a microUSB adapter that provided 5V and at least 700mA of current, a TV monitor, PiSwitch, SD Card, keyboard, and mouse. I installed the Rasbian operating system (OS). The process to install the Rasbian took about 10 minutes to boot starting at 21:08 on 10/27/2023 and ending at 21:18. 1,513 megabytes (MB) was written to the SD card running at (2.5 MB/sec). On Sunday, November 26th, 2023, one of the peripherals seemed to have a circuit trip. I used an Apple USB-C cord and block to connect the PiSwitch to a laptop. This gave enough power for the Raspberry Pi to turn on using the same adapter as before. I referred to the Pi manual often for troubleshooting. The device has five indicator LEDs that provide statuses/feedback. Only two of my lights were turned on which where: ACT which lights up green when the SD card is accessed and PWR—which turns on red—signifying it is hooked up to 3.3V power. After booting up, I was able to get onto the desktop and open up LXTerminal and start entering Linux commands. Due to a lack of resources, I did not have a Wi-Fi dongle to enable network interface wirelessly or an ethernet cable to provide a wired connection
