Mechanism of C−H Bond Activation of Alkyl-Substituted Benzenes by Cationic Platinum(II) Complexes
While all methyl- and ethyl-substituted benzenes react with diimine Pt(II) methyl cations to give η^3-benzyl products, they do not all get there by the same pathway. For toluene and p-xylene, isotopic labeling shows that initial activation occurs at aryl positions with subsequent intermolecular conversion to the benzyl product. For ethylbenzene and 1,4-diethylbenzene, initial activation takes place exclusively at aryl C−H bonds, and conversion to the η^3-benzyl product takes place via intramolecular isomerization. Only in the most extreme case of steric crowding the reaction of a bulky diimine platinum methyl cation (Ar = Mes) with triethylbenzene does direct activation of the ethyl group become preferred to aryl activation
Kinetic and Thermodynamic Preferences in Aryl vs Benzylic C−H Bond Activation with Cationic Pt(II) Complexes
Anhydrous cationic Pt(II) complexes [(NN)Pt(CH_3)(CF_3CD_2OD)]+ (1, NN = ArNC(Me)−C(Me)NAr), which are obtained by reaction of (NN)Pt(CH_3)_2 with B(C_6F_5)_3 in CF_3CD_2OD, activate C−H bonds of benzene and methylbenzenes, with enhanced reactivity compared to the previously prepared equilibrium mixtures with the (thermodynamically favored) aquo complexes. For methylbenzenes (toluene, p-xylene, mesitylene), activation at the aromatic and benzylic positions are kinetically competitive, but the product of the latter is strongly favored thermodynamically. This unusual trend is attributed to formation of η^3-benzyl structures, which can be observed spectroscopically for 1,4-diethylbenzene activation
C−H Bond Activation by Dicationic Platinum(II) Complexes
Double protonolysis of diimine platinum dimethyls [(N-N)PtMe_2] (N-N ═ ArNC(Me)C(Me) ═ NAr) generates dicationic Pt(II) complexes that can activate a variety of C−H bonds, liberating 1 equiv of acid and forming organoplatinum species that are moderately stable to the resulting acidic conditions. Ethylbenzenes lead to η^3-benzyl complexes; mechanistic experiments suggest that η^3-benzyl product formation proceeds via C−H bond activation at the benzylic methylene position. In some cases π-arene complexes can be observed, but their role in the C−H activation process is not clear. Cyclohexane and 1-pentene react to give η^3-allyl complexes; allylbenzene gives a chelated phenyl-η^2-olefin structure, as determined by X-ray diffraction. No stable C−H activation products are obtained from methylbenzenes, benzene itself, or alkanes
Understanding young people's transitions in university halls through space and time
This article contributes to the theoretical discussion about young people's transitions through space and time. Space and time are complex overarching concepts that have creative potential in deepening understanding of transition. The focus of this research is young people's experiences of communal living in university halls. It is argued that particular space-time concepts draw attention to different facets of experience and in combination deepen the understanding of young people's individual and collective transitions. The focus of the article is the uses of the space-time concepts 'routine', 'representation', 'rhythm' and 'ritual' to research young people's experiences. The article draws on research findings from two studies in the North of England. © 2010 SAGE Publications
Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of the CFRS and LDSS Redshift Surveys---III. Field elliptical galaxies at 0.2 < z < 1.0
Surface photometry has been performed on a sample of 46 field elliptical
galaxies. These galaxies are described well by a deVaucouleurs R^{1/4} profile.
The sample was selected from the combined Canada-France and LDSS redshift
surveys and spans the range 0.20 < z < 1.00. The relationship between galaxy
half-light radius and luminosity evolves such that a galaxy of a given size is
more luminous by Delta M_B=-0.97 \pm 0.14 mag at z=0.92 and the mean rest-frame
color shifts blueward by Delta (U-V) =-0.68 \pm 0.11 at z=0.92 relative to the
local cluster relations. Approximately 1/3 of these elliptical galaxies exhibit
[OII] 3727 emission lines with equivalent widths > 15 angstroms indicating
ongoing star formation. Estimated star-formation rates imply that \le 5% of the
stellar mass in the elliptical galaxy population has been formed since z=1. We
see no evidence for a decline in the space density of early-type galaxies with
look-back time. The statistics and a comparison with local
luminosity functions are both consistent with the view that the population of
massive early-type galaxies was largely in place by z~1. This implies that
merging is not required since that time to produce the present-day space

Orbiter Return-To-Flight Entry Aeroheating
The Columbia accident on February 1, 2003 began an unprecedented level of effort within the hypersonic aerothermodynamic community to support the Space Shuttle Program. During the approximately six month time frame of the primary Columbia Accident Investigation Board activity, many technical disciplines were involved in a concerted effort to reconstruct the last moments of the Columbia and her crew, and understand the critical events that led to that loss. Significant contributions to the CAIB activity were made by the hypersonic aerothermodynamic community(REF CAIB) in understanding the re-entry environments that led to the propagation of an ascent foam induced wing leading edge damage to a subsequent breech of the wing spar of Columbia, and the subsequent breakup of the vehicle. A core of the NASA hypersonic aerothermodynamics team that was involved in the CAIB investigation has been combined with the United Space Alliance and Boeing Orbiter engineering team in order to position the Space Shuttle Program with a process to perform in-flight Thermal Protection System damage assessments. This damage assessment process is now part of the baselined plan for Shuttle support, and is a direct out-growth of the Columbia accident and NASAs response. Multiple re-entry aeroheating tools are involved in this damage assessment process, many of which have been developed during the Return To Flight activity. In addition, because these aeroheating tools are part of an overall damage assessment process that also involves the thermal and stress analyses community, in addition to a much broader mission support team, an integrated process for performing the damage assessment activities has been developed by the Space Shuttle Program and the Orbiter engineering community. Several subsets of activity in the Orbiter aeroheating communities support to the Return To Flight effort have been described in previous publications (CFD?, Cavity Heating? Any BLT? Grid Generation?). This work will provide a description of the integrated process utilized to perform Orbiter tile damage assessment, and in particular will seek to provide a description of the integrated aeroheating tools utilized to perform these assessments. Individual aeroheating tools will be described which provide the nominal re-entry heating environment characterization for the Orbiter, the heating environments for tile damage, heating effects due to exposed Thermal Protection System substrates, the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics for the description of tile cavity heating, and boundary layer transition prediction. This paper is meant to provide an overall view of the integrated aeroheating assessment process for tile damage assessment as one of a sequence of papers on the development of the boundary layer transition prediction capability in support of Space Shuttle Return To Flight efforts
Did the London Initiative Zone investment programme affect general practice structure and performance in East London? A time series analysis of cervical screening coverage and asthma prescribing
A programme of incentives was set up in the London Initiative Zones to improve primary care in inner London based on the findings of the Tomlinson Enquiry in 1992. This descriptive study is a 4-y time series analysis of changes in general practice structure in East London as the result of London Initiative Zone investment, and an exploration of the possible effect of investment on practice performance.We used routinely available administrative data for the whole analysis. General practice characteristics and two selected performance indicators: the asthma prophylaxis to bronchodilator ratio and cervical cytology screening rate, for all practices in the East London and the City Health Authority for 4 y, 1993-1996, were used. Both reflect practice efficiency, but relate to different aspects of practice performance. The prescribing indicator is more indicative of the quality of clinical practise, whereas cervical screening coverage relates more to the characteristics of the practice population and to practice organisation. Repeated measures analyses were used to identify trends and to explore the relationship between changes in practice characteristics and performance. Graphical methods were used to compare East London trends with the rest of England.There were significant improvements in practice structure as the consequence of London Initiative Zone investment. There was a positive association with improvements in practice performance, but East London still lagged some way behind national patterns. The findings suggest that while improvements in asthma prescribing follow the national trend, practices have difficulty in achieving and sustaining the 80% target for cervical cytology screening, and that an overall population coverage of 80% may be in doubt.Increased investment in practice staffing may be influential in improving some aspects of performance. However, in common with other inner cities, a greater effort and more innovative strategies may be needed to achieve a standard of performance equal to the best
Science Impacts of the SPHEREx All-Sky Optical to Near-Infrared Spectral Survey: Report of a Community Workshop Examining Extragalactic, Galactic, Stellar and Planetary Science
SPHEREx is a proposed SMEX mission selected for Phase A. SPHEREx will carry
out the first all-sky spectral survey and provide for every 6.2" pixel a
spectra between 0.75 and 4.18 m [with R41.4] and 4.18 and 5.00
m [with R135]. The SPHEREx team has proposed three specific science
investigations to be carried out with this unique data set: cosmic inflation,
interstellar and circumstellar ices, and the extra-galactic background light.
It is readily apparent, however, that many other questions in astrophysics and
planetary sciences could be addressed with the SPHEREx data. The SPHEREx team
convened a community workshop in February 2016, with the intent of enlisting
the aid of a larger group of scientists in defining these questions. This paper
summarizes the rich and varied menu of investigations that was laid out. It
includes studies of the composition of main belt and Trojan/Greek asteroids;
mapping the zodiacal light with unprecedented spatial and spectral resolution;
identifying and studying very low-metallicity stars; improving stellar
parameters in order to better characterize transiting exoplanets; studying
aliphatic and aromatic carbon-bearing molecules in the interstellar medium;
mapping star formation rates in nearby galaxies; determining the redshift of
clusters of galaxies; identifying high redshift quasars over the full sky; and
providing a NIR spectrum for most eROSITA X-ray sources. All of these
investigations, and others not listed here, can be carried out with the nominal
all-sky spectra to be produced by SPHEREx. In addition, the workshop defined
enhanced data products and user tools which would facilitate some of these
scientific studies. Finally, the workshop noted the high degrees of synergy
between SPHEREx and a number of other current or forthcoming programs,
including JWST, WFIRST, Euclid, GAIA, K2/Kepler, TESS, eROSITA and LSST.Comment: Report of the First SPHEREx Community Workshop,

From teaching physics to teaching children : beginning teachers learning from pupils
This paper discusses the development of beginning physics teachers' pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in the context of teaching basic electricity during a one-year Professional Graduate Diploma in Education course (PGDE) and beyond. This longitudinal study used repeated semi-structured interviews over a period of four-and-a-half years. The interview schedule followed a line of development through the secondary school electrical syllabus in Scotland. Fifteen student teachers were interviewed during the PGDE year. Six of them were followed up at the end of the Induction Year (their first year as a newly qualified teacher), and again two-and-a-half years later. Thematic analysis of the interviews showed that before the beginning teachers had taught any classes, their initial focus was on how to transform their own subject matter knowledge (SMK) about electricity into forms that were accessible to pupils. As the beginning teachers gained experience working with classes, they gave vivid descriptions of interacting with particular pupils when teaching electricity which showed the development of their pedagogical knowledge. This played a significant role in the teachers' change of focus from teaching physics to teaching children as they transformed their SMK into forms that were accessible to pupils and developed their general pedagogical knowledge
