Career Aspirations of Older Workers: An Australian Study
Global challenges associated with the ageing workforce include lower levels of education and negative attitudes of older workers towards learning and covert age discrimination in the workplace. This report discusses initial findings from a survey of older workers employed in regional areas in Australia. The older workers surveyed were predominantly blue collar with low levels of formal education. Contrary to the stereotypical views, there were few attitude differences between older (>40 years) and younger workers (≤40 years). However, gender, education level and job type had a greater impact on attitudes in the older workers when compared to their younger colleagues
The process of establishing implementing and maintaining a social support infant feeding programme
Objective To describe the process of establishing and implementing a social support infant feeding intervention.
Design This paper outlines the initial stages of a randomised controlled trial which assessed the effectiveness of a social support intervention on a range of infant feeding outcomes. Details are presented of the processes involved in recruiting, training and supporting a group of volunteers who provided support to the study sample.
Setting Camden and Islington, London, UK.
Results Initial networking with local agencies and organisations provided invaluable information and contacts. Employing a dedicated volunteer co-ordinator is vitally important in the recruitment, training and support of volunteers. Providing child care and travel expenses is an essential incentive for volunteers with young children. Advertisements placed in local newspapers were the most successful means of recruiting volunteers. Appropriate training is needed to equip volunteers with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide effective support. Particular emphasis in the training focused upon developing the necessary interpersonal skills and self-confidence. The evaluation of the training programme demonstrated that it improved volunteers’ knowledge and reported confidence. The provision of ongoing support is also essential to maintain volunteers’ interest and enthusiasm. The retention of volunteers is, however, a key challenge.
Conclusions The processes outlined in this paper have demonstrated the feasibility of successfully establishing, implementing and maintaining a community-based social support infant feeding programme. The experiences described provide useful insights into the practical issues that need to be addressed in setting up a social support intervention

de Cooperativas, Associações e Agroindústrias da Agricultura Familiar do Território
Missões (REMAF) e a Cooperativa de Produção e Comercialização da Agricultura
Familiar de Cerro Largo Ltda (COOPACEL) como empreendimentos incubados, além
de assessorar na pré-incubação de um grupo de catadores de materiais recicláveis e
reutilizáveis, com o intuito comum de formar uma cooperativa. O objetivo deste
trabalho é apresentar os resultados do programa de extensão: processos e ações de
extensão da ITCEES frente o desenvolvimento sustentável e solidário da região das
Missões no Noroeste do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Tal programa possui seis
projetos interligados e para alcançar os resultados propostos, foi empregada a
metodologia qualitativa e como instrumentos de coleta de dados foram utilizados: a
observação participante e a entrevista em profundidade. Com este trabalho, espera-
se que a ITCEES continue a atuar com destaque no cenário da extensão
universitária da UFFS, além de proporcionar o crescimento e o desenvolvimento
mais sólido das empresas incubada
Patient empowerment within a coronary care unit: insights for health professionals drawn from a patient satisfaction survey
The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate coronary care patients’ perceptions of their care and interventions related to empowerment and strengthening patient choice. The study, conducted in one acute National Health Service (NHS) Trust in Cambridgeshire, England, and completed in 2002, employed a prospective survey design. The research used a self-completion, pilot, postal questionnaire, including closed, open and scaled questions as the main method of data collection. From a total of 200 eligible patients, an unselected, consecutive sample of 142 in-patients consented to participate, of whom 103 returned the questionnaire—–a response rate of 73%. In contrast to much published literature, this study demonstrated that empowerment issues involving the rights of coronary care patients to be primary decision makers, managers of their illnesses and ultimate arbiters of their treatment and care were of minimal concern to all but a few. Almost 90% of patients were content to entrust their care exclusively to health professionals based on their confidence in the clinical expertise of the medical and nursing staff. Findings suggested that, while respondents were well-satisfied with their care, the ethos of patient empowerment was of peripheral concern and readily abdicated in the face of acute illness
A qualitative study exploring the relationship between nursing and health promotion language, theory and practice
The definitions and meaning qualified nurses employed in an acute NHS hospital setting in the UK gave to health education and health promotion practice and how these fitted established language and theory were investigated qualitatively. These concepts, and the concomitant frameworks and models of practice, have been the subject of considerable debate in the literature. While unresolved both in general and in nursing, a degree of theoretical convergence was established in the 1990s [Bunton, R., Macdonald, G., 1992. Health promotion: disciplines and diversity. For many of the participants in this study however, the meanings given to these concepts and the predominant use of health education were inconsistent with much of the language of the wider debate and this has potential implications for nurse education. For, if the findings are considered transferable then there is a need to develop education strategies and curricula that articulate the ideological foundations of policy and practice and to use mainstream terminology to assist nurses both to understand and contribute to the contemporary health promotion debate
Using a realist approach to evaluate smoking cessation interventions targeting pregnant women and young people
Background
This paper describes a study protocol designed to evaluate a programme of smoking cessation interventions targeting pregnant women and young people living in urban and rural locations in Northeast Scotland. The study design was developed on so-called 'realist' evaluation principles, which are concerned with the implementation of interventions as well as their outcomes.
Methods/design
A two-phased study was designed based on the Theory of Change (TOC) using mixed methods to assess both process and outcome factors. The study was designed with input from the relevant stakeholders. The mixed-methods approach consists of semi-structured interviews with planners, service providers, service users and non-users. These qualitative interviews will be analysed using a thematic framework approach. The quantitative element of the study will include the analysis of routinely collected data and specific project monitoring data, such as data on service engagement, service use, quit rates and changes in smoking status.
Discussion
The process of involving key stakeholders was conducted using logic modelling and TOC tools. Engaging stakeholders, including those responsible for funding, developing and delivering, and those intended to benefit from interventions aimed at them, in their evaluation design, are considered by many to increase the validity and rigour of the subsequent evidence generated. This study is intended to determine not only the components and processes, but also the possible effectiveness of this set of health interventions, and contribute to the evidence base about smoking cessation interventions aimed at priority groups in Scotland. It is also anticipated that this study will contribute to the ongoing debate about the role and challenges of 'realist' evaluation approaches in general, and the utility of logic modelling and TOC approaches in particular, for evaluation of complex health interventions
Pathology, bias and queer diagnosis : a crip queer consciousness
The medical industrial complex has historically contributed to the oppression and pathology of queer and disabled people in a myriad of ways; through forced medication and institutionalization, as well as denial of self-determination and identity. Queer theory and disability theory both challenge modes of normalcy directly related to both queer and disabled identities by using a lens that encompasses sexuality, gender, embodiment, health and impairment. This paper will use queer theory and disability theory to analyze the ways in which queer and disabled identities are connected and co-constructed, as well as, the ways in which these intersections may expand our thinking in social work. The current diagnosis and controversy around Gender Identity Disorder as a diagnosis in the DSM will be examined through the lenses of queer theory and disability theory, to aid in the continued movement to depathologize queer and disabled identities. It is the perspective of this paper that the liberation of queer people is directly linked to the liberation of disabled people and that trans/queer justice is disability justice
