‘Are we being de-gifted, Miss?’ Primary school gifted and talented co-ordinators’ responses to the Gifted and Talented Education Policy in England

By seeking the views of the gifted and talented co-ordinators (For ease of reference, the term gifted and talented (G&T) co-ordinator is used throughout the paper as a generic shorthand for the research participants who were either designated school gifted and talented co-ordinators or teachers or head teachers with responsibility for policy implementation) with responsibility for addressing the requirements of the policy, the study reported in this paper explored how primary schools in England responded to the policy. Drawing on data gathered using questionnaires with a national sample of primary schools as well as follow-up in-depth interviews with a sample of G&T co-ordinators, the authors report their findings. The study found that there was considerable unease about the concept of identifying and ‘labelling’ a group of pupils as ‘gifted and talented’. G&T co-ordinators found it difficult to interpret the policy requirements and were responding pragmatically to what they considered to be required by the government. Curriculum provision for the selected group of gifted and talented pupils was patchy. The paper concludes by identifying a need for further professional development for teachers and by challenging the policy's over-emphasis on identifying and labelling gifted and talented pupils. We posit whether the gifted and talented education policy would have been better introduced and enjoyed greater success by leaving the identification of pupils to one side and by placing greater emphasis on developing effective learning and teaching strategies instead
Quasi-Dirac neutrinos and solar neutrino data
We present an analysis of the solar neutrino data in the context of a
quasi-Dirac neutrino model in which the lepton mixing matrix is given at tree
level by the tribimaximal matrix. When radiative corrections are taken into
account, new effects in neutrino oscillations, as , appear.
This oscillation is constrained by the solar neutrino data. In our analysis, we
have found an allowed region for our two free parameters and .
The radiative correction, , can vary approximately from to and the calculated fourth mass eigenstate, , 0.01 eV
to 0.2 eV at 2 level. These results are very similar to the ones

Solving the two-center nuclear shell-model problem with arbitrarily-orientated deformed potentials
A general new technique to solve the two-center problem with
arbitrarily-orientated deformed realistic potentials is demonstrated, which is
based on the powerful potential separable expansion method. As an example,
molecular single-particle spectra for C + C Mg are
calculated using deformed Woods-Saxon potentials. These clearly show that
non-axial symmetric configurations play a crucial role in molecular resonances
observed in reaction processes for this system at low energy
Astrometric-spectroscopic determination of the absolute masses of the HgMn binary star Phi Herculis
The Mercury-Manganese star Phi Her is a well known spectroscopic binary that
has been the subject of a recent study by Zavala et al. (2006), in which they
resolved the companion using long-baseline interferometry. The total mass of
the binary is now fairly well established, but the combination of the
spectroscopy with the astrometry has not resulted in individual masses
consistent with the spectral types of the components. The motion of the center
of light of Phi Her was clearly detected by the Hipparcos satellite. Here we
make use of the Hipparcos intermediate data (`abscissa residuals') and show
that by combining them in an optimal fashion with the interferometry the
individual masses can be obtained reliably using only astrometry. We re-examine
and then incorporate existing radial-velocity measurements into the orbital
solution, obtaining improved masses of 3.05 +/- 0.24 M_Sun and 1.614 +/- 0.066
M_Sun that are consistent with the theoretical mass-luminosity relation from
recent stellar evolution models. These mass determinations provide important
information for the understanding of the nature of this peculiar class of

Solitary Waves Under the Competition of Linear and Nonlinear Periodic Potentials
In this paper, we study the competition of linear and nonlinear lattices and
its effects on the stability and dynamics of bright solitary waves. We consider
both lattices in a perturbative framework, whereby the technique of Hamiltonian
perturbation theory can be used to obtain information about the existence of
solutions, and the same approach, as well as eigenvalue count considerations,
can be used to obtained detailed conditions about their linear stability. We
find that the analytical results are in very good agreement with our numerical
findings and can also be used to predict features of the dynamical evolution of

A nonstationary generalization of the Kerr congruence
Making use of the Kerr theorem for shear-free null congruences and of
Newman's representation for a virtual charge ``moving'' in complex space-time,
we obtain an axisymmetric time-dependent generalization of the Kerr congruence,
with a singular ring uniformly contracting to a point and expanding then to
infinity. Electromagnetic and complex eikonal field distributions are naturally
associated with the obtained congruence, with electric charge being
necesssarily unit (``elementary''). We conjecture that the corresponding
solution to the Einstein-Maxwell equations could describe the process of
continious transition of the naked ringlike singularitiy into a rotating black
hole and vice versa, under a particular current radius of the singular ring.Comment: 6 pages, twocolum
