Uncertainty in Crowd Data Sourcing under Structural Constraints
Applications extracting data from crowdsourcing platforms must deal with the
uncertainty of crowd answers in two different ways: first, by deriving
estimates of the correct value from the answers; second, by choosing crowd
questions whose answers are expected to minimize this uncertainty relative to
the overall data collection goal. Such problems are already challenging when we
assume that questions are unrelated and answers are independent, but they are
even more complicated when we assume that the unknown values follow hard
structural constraints (such as monotonicity).
In this vision paper, we examine how to formally address this issue with an
approach inspired by [Amsterdamer et al., 2013]. We describe a generalized
setting where we model constraints as linear inequalities, and use them to
guide the choice of crowd questions and the processing of answers. We present
the main challenges arising in this setting, and propose directions to solve

Longitudinal and transverse fermion-boson vertex in QED at finite temperature in the HTL approximation
We evaluate the fermion-photon vertex in QED at the one loop level in Hard
Thermal Loop approximation and write it in covariant form. The complete vertex
can be expanded in terms of 32 basis vectors. As is well known, the
fermion-photon vertex and the fermion propagator are related through a
Ward-Takahashi Identity (WTI). This relation splits the vertex into two parts:
longitudinal (Gamma_L) and transverse (Gamma_T). Gamma_L is fixed by the WTI.
The description of the longitudinal part consumes 8 of the basis vectors. The
remaining piece Gamma_T is then written in terms of 24 spin amplitudes.
Extending the work of Ball and Chiu and Kizilersu et. al., we propose a set of
basis vectors T^mu_i(P_1,P_2) at finite temperature such that each of these is
transverse to the photon four-momentum and also satisfies T^mu_i(P,P)=0, in
accordance with the Ward Identity, with their corresponding coefficients being
free of kinematic singularities. This basis reduces to the form proposed by
Kizilersu et. al. at zero temperature. We also evaluate explicitly the
coefficient of each of these vectors at the above-mentioned level of

Dynamical Mass Generation in a Finite-Temperature Abelian Gauge Theory
We write down the gap equation for the fermion self-energy in a
finite-temperature abelian gauge theory in three dimensions. The instantaneous
approximation is relaxed, momentum-dependent fermion and photon self-energies
are considered, and the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equation is solved
numerically. The relation between the zero-momentum and zero-temperature
fermion self-energy and the critical temperature T_c, above which there is no
dynamical mass generation, is then studied. We also investigate the effect
which the number of fermion flavours N_f has on the results, and we give the

Temporal sampling helps unravel the genetic structure of naturally occurring populations of a phytoparasitic nematode. 1. Insights from the estimation of effective population sizes
International audienceThe sustainability of modern agriculture relies on strategies that can control the ability of pathogens to overcome chemicals or genetic resistances through natural selection. This evolutionary potential, which depends partly on effective population size (Ne), is greatly influenced by human activities. In this context, wild pathogen populations can provide valuable information for assessing the long-term risk associated with crop pests. In this study, we estimated the effective population size of the beet cyst nematode, Heterodera schachtii, by sampling 34 populations infecting the sea beet Beta vulgaris spp. maritima twice within a one-year period. Only 20 populations produced enough generations to analyze the variation in allele frequencies, with the remaining populations showing a high mortality rate of the host plant after only one year. The 20 analyzed populations showed surprisingly low effective population sizes, with most having Ne close to 85 individuals. We attribute these low values to the variation in population size through time, systematic inbreeding, and unbalanced sex- ratios. Our results suggest that H. schachtii has low evolutionary potential in natural environments. Pest control strategies in which populations on crops mimic wild populations may help prevent parasite adaptation to host resistance
Family Unification in Five and Six Dimensions
In family unification models, all three families of quarks and leptons are
grouped together into an irreducible representation of a simple gauge group,
thus unifying the Standard Model gauge symmetries and a gauged family symmetry.
Large orthogonal groups, and the exceptional groups and have been
much studied for family unification. The main theoretical difficulty of family
unification is the existence of mirror families at the weak scale. It is shown
here that family unification without mirror families can be realized in simple
five-dimensional and six-dimensional orbifold models similar to those recently
proposed for SU(5) and SO(10) grand unification. It is noted that a family
unification group that survived to near the weak scale and whose coupling
extrapolated to high scales unified with those of the Standard model would be
evidence accessible in principle at low energy of the existence of small

Remarks on the Messinian evaporites of Zakynthos Island (Ionian Sea, Eastern Mediterranean)
Detailed mapping of the Neogene deposits on Zakynthos Island shows that the Messinian primary evaporite basins, formed over Ionian basement, are delimited by the westernmost outcrop of the Triassic evaporitic diapirs, located west of the Kalamaki-Argasi Messinian gypsum unit. The post-Miocene external Ionian thrust is emplaced west of the Triassic diapirs. Planktonic foraminifera biostratigraphy indicates that primary evaporite accumulation took place probably during the first stage of the Messinian salinity crisis (5.96-5.60 Ma), in shallower parts of a foreland basin, formed over the Pre-Apulian and the Ionian zone basement. Establishment of these depositional environments, before the Ionian thrust emplacement, was probably due to the particularities of the foreland basin, which extended from the external Ionian to the internal Pre-Apulian zone. Field observations, borehole data and an onshore seismic profile show that the Neogene sediments over the Pre-Apulian basement correspond to the foredeep through forebulge domain of the foreland basin, as it is documented from their spatial thickness distribution. In contrast, the Neogene sediments over the Ionian basement correspond to the wedge top of the foreland basin, which was less subsiding, as it is deduced by their reduced thickness. This lower subsidence rate was the result of the concurrent diapiric movements of the Ionian Triassic evaporites. In Agios Sostis area, located over Pre-Apulian basement, the Neogene sequence is intercalated by decametre-thick resedimented blocks consisting of shallow water selenite. To the southeast, this mass-wasting Messinian gypsum passes to mainly gypsum turbidite. In Kalamaki-Argasi area, located over Ionian basement, the shallow water environment led to the deposition of the observed primary gypsum. Erosion of the primary gypsum of both forebulge and wedge top supplied the foreland basin’s depocenter with gypsum turbidites.
Η λεπτομερής χαρτογράφηση των Νεογενών αποθέσεων της Ζακύνθου δείχνει ότι οι λεκάνες πρωτογενούς Μεσσήνιας εβαποριτικής απόθεσης, που σχηματίστηκαν πάνω σε Ιόνιο υπόβαθρο, οριοθετούνται από τη δυτικότερη εμφάνιση των Τριαδικών εβαποριτικών διάπειρων (δυτικά της Μεσσήνιας ενότητας γύψου Καλαμάκι-Αργάσι). Η μετα-Μειοκαινική εξωτερική Ιόνια επώθηση τοποθετείται δυτικά αυτών των Τριαδικών διάπειρων. Βιοστρωματογραφική ανάλυση των συναθροίσεων πλαγκτονικών τρηματοφόρων στα Νεογενή ιζήματα δείχνει ότι η συσσώρευση πρωτογενούς εβαπορίτη έλαβε χώρα πιθανά κατά το πρώτο στάδιο της κρίσης αλμυρότητας του Μεσσηνίου (5.96-5.60 Εκατ.χρ.), στα αβαθέστερα τμήματα της λεκάνης προχώρας, η οποία σχηματίστηκε πάνω στο Προ-Απούλιο και Ιόνιο αλπικό υπόβαθρο. Ο σχηματισμός των περιβαλλόντων ιζηματογένεσης, πριν από την Ιόνια επώθηση, πιθανά οφείλεται στις ιδιαιτερότητες της λεκάνης προχώρας, η οποία εκείνο το διάστημα εκτείνονταν από την εξωτερική Ιόνια ως την εσωτερική Προ-Απούλια ζώνη. Νέα δεδομένα υπαίθρου, σε συνδυασμό με τη βιοστρωματογραφία, τα στοιχεία γεωτρήσεων και μία διαθέσιμη σεισμική τομή δείχνουν ότι τα Νεογενή ιζήματα πάνω στο Προ-Απούλιο υπόβαθρο αντιστοιχούν στον τμήμα της λεκάνης προχώρας, από το προβύθισμα (foredeep) ως την πρόσθια ανύψωση (forebulge), όπως αυτό διαπιστώνεται από την χωρική κατανομή του πάχους τους. Αντίθετα, τα Νεογενή ιζήματα πάνω στο Ιόνιο υπόβαθρο αντιστοιχούν στο τμήμα της λεκάνης προχώρας που βρίσκεται πάνω στο μετωπικό πρίσμα της ορογένεσης (wedge top), το οποίο βυθίζονταν λιγότερο όπως συνάγεται από το ελαττωμένο πάχος των ιζημάτων. Ο μικρότερος ρυθμός βύθισης οφείλεται στις διαπειρικές κινήσεις των Τριαδικών εβαποριτών. Στη Νεογενή ακολουθία, που βρίσκεται πάνω σε Προ-Απούλιο υπόβαθρο (περιοχή Άγιος Σώστης), παρεμβάλλονται επανιζηματοποιημένα μπλοκ δεκαμετρικού πάχους αποτελούμενα από σεληνίτη μικρού βάθους απόθεσης. Προς νότο, αυτή η βαρυτικά μεταφερόμενη μάζα της Μεσσήνιας γύψου μεταπίπτει κυρίως σε τουρβιδιτική γύψο. Στην περιοχή Καλαμάκι-Αργάσι που βρίσκεται πάνω σε Ιόνιο υπόβαθρο, το αβαθές περιβάλλον οδήγησε στην απόθεση της παρατηρούμενης πρωτογενούς γύψου. Η διάβρωση της πρωτογενούς γύψου τόσο της πρόσθιας ανύψωσης όσο και του μετωπικού πρίσματος επώθησης τροφοδότησαν το προβύθισμα της λεκάνης προχώρας με τουρβιδίτες γύψου
New Higgs signals induced by mirror fermion mixing effects
We study the conditions under which flavor violation arises in scalar-fermion
interactions, as a result of the mixing phenomena between the standard model
and exotic fermions. Phenomenological consequences are discussed within the
specific context of a left-right model where these additional fermions have
mirror properties under the new SU(2)_R gauge group.
Bounds on the parameters of the model are obtained from LFV processes; these
results are then used to study the LFV Higgs decays (H --> tau l_j, l_j = e,

Ghost excitonic insulator transition in layered graphite
Some unusual properties of layered graphite, including a linear energy
dependence of the quasiparticle damping and weak ferromagnetism at low doping,
are explained as a result of the proximity of a single graphene sheet to the
excitonic insulator phase which can be further stabilized in a doped system of
many layers stacked in the staggered () configuration
A holistic multi-methodology for sustainable renovation
A review of the barriers for building renovation has revealed a lack of methodologies, which can promote sustainability objectives and assist various stakeholders during the design stage of building renovation/retrofitting projects. The purpose of this paper is to develop a Holistic Multi-methodology for Sustainable Renovation, which aims to deal with complexity of renovation projects. It provides a framework through which to involve the different stakeholders in the design process to improve group learning and group decision-making, and hence make the building renovation design process more robust and efficient. Therefore, the paper discusses the essence of multifaceted barriers in building renovation regarding cultural changes and technological/physical changes. The outcome is a proposal for a multi-methodology framework, which is developed by introducing, evaluating and mixing methods from Soft Systems Methodologies (SSM) with Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM). The potential of applying the proposed methodology in renovation projects is demonstrated through a case study
