    Electromagnetic Simulation and Design of a Novel Waveguide RF Wien Filter for Electric Dipole Moment Measurements of Protons and Deuterons

    The conventional Wien filter is a device with orthogonal static magnetic and electric fields, often used for velocity separation of charged particles. Here we describe the electromagnetic design calculations for a novel waveguide RF Wien filter that will be employed to solely manipulate the spins of protons or deuterons at frequencies of about 0.1 to 2 MHz at the COoler SYnchrotron COSY at J\"ulich. The device will be used in a future experiment that aims at measuring the proton and deuteron electric dipole moments, which are expected to be very small. Their determination, however, would have a huge impact on our understanding of the universe.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, 4 table

    Phase locking the spin precession in a storage ring

    This letter reports the successful use of feedback from a spin polarization measurement to the revolution frequency of a 0.97 GeV/cc bunched and polarized deuteron beam in the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) storage ring in order to control both the precession rate (121\approx 121 kHz) and the phase of the horizontal polarization component. Real time synchronization with a radio frequency (rf) solenoid made possible the rotation of the polarization out of the horizontal plane, yielding a demonstration of the feedback method to manipulate the polarization. In particular, the rotation rate shows a sinusoidal function of the horizontal polarization phase (relative to the rf solenoid), which was controlled to within a one standard deviation range of σ=0.21\sigma = 0.21 rad. The minimum possible adjustment was 3.7 mHz out of a revolution frequency of 753 kHz, which changes the precession rate by 26 mrad/s. Such a capability meets a requirement for the use of storage rings to look for an intrinsic electric dipole moment of charged particles

    Spin tune mapping as a novel tool to probe the spin dynamics in storage rings

    Precision experiments, such as the search for electric dipole moments of charged particles using storage rings, demand for an understanding of the spin dynamics with unprecedented accuracy. The ultimate aim is to measure the electric dipole moments with a sensitivity up to 15 orders in magnitude better than the magnetic dipole moment of the stored particles. This formidable task requires an understanding of the background to the signal of the electric dipole from rotations of the spins in the spurious magnetic fields of a storage ring. One of the observables, especially sensitive to the imperfection magnetic fields in the ring is the angular orientation of stable spin axis. Up to now, the stable spin axis has never been determined experimentally, and in addition, the JEDI collaboration for the first time succeeded to quantify the background signals that stem from false rotations of the magnetic dipole moments in the horizontal and longitudinal imperfection magnetic fields of the storage ring. To this end, we developed a new method based on the spin tune response of a machine to artificially applied longitudinal magnetic fields. This novel technique, called \textit{spin tune mapping}, emerges as a very powerful tool to probe the spin dynamics in storage rings. The technique was experimentally tested in 2014 at the cooler synchrotron COSY, and for the first time, the angular orientation of the stable spin axis at two different locations in the ring has been determined to an unprecedented accuracy of better than 2.8μ2.8\murad.Comment: 32 pages, 15 figures, 7 table

    Phase Measurement for Driven Spin Oscillations in a Storage Ring

    This paper reports the first simultaneous measurement of the horizontal and vertical components of the polarization vector in a storage ring under the influence of a radio frequency (rf) solenoid. The experiments were performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY in J\"ulich using a vector polarized, bunched 0.97GeV/c0.97\,\textrm{GeV/c} deuteron beam. Using the new spin feedback system, we set the initial phase difference between the solenoid field and the precession of the polarization vector to a predefined value. The feedback system was then switched off, allowing the phase difference to change over time, and the solenoid was switched on to rotate the polarization vector. We observed an oscillation of the vertical polarization component and the phase difference. The oscillations can be described using an analytical model. The results of this experiment also apply to other rf devices with horizontal magnetic fields, such as Wien filters. The precise manipulation of particle spins in storage rings is a prerequisite for measuring the electric dipole moment (EDM) of charged particles

Ademais, pretende-se mostrar que, em diversos pontos, não há consenso na doutrina brasileira acerca da tratativa deste tipo de conduta delituosa, complicando-se ainda mais quando comparado à doutrina internacional. Em uma análise do ordenamento jurídico brasileiro, demonstrar-se-ão as complicações que podem surgir ao analisar estes delitos à luz da legislação penal brasileira vigente, podendo vir a ter um efeito teratológico face à atual realidade social mundial, em que se procuram penas alternativas para condutas lesivas, pois é reconhecida a impotência do encarceramento na repressão, na prevenção ou sequer na reparação dos danos produzidos por qualquer lesão ou ofensa a direitos

    A social network analysis of social cohesion in a constructed pride: Implications for ex situ reintroduction of the African Lion (Panthera leo)

    Animal conservation practices include the grouping of captive related and unrelated individuals to form a social structure which is characteristic of that species in the wild. In response to the rapid decline of wild African lion (Panthera leo) populations, an array of conservational strategies have been adopted. Ex situ reintroduction of the African lion requires the construction of socially cohesive pride structures prior to wild release. This pilot study adopted a social network theory approach to quantitatively assess a captive pride's social structure and the relationships between individuals within them. Group composition (who is present in a group) and social interaction data (social licking, greeting, play) was observed and recorded to assess social cohesion within a released semi-wild pride. UCINET and SOCPROG software was utilised to represent and analyse these social networks. Results indicate that the pride is socially cohesive, does not exhibit random associations, and the role of socially influential keystone individuals is important for maintaining social bondedness within a lion pride. These results are potentially informative for the structure of lion prides, in captivity and in the wild, and could have implications for captive and wild-founder reintroductions

Após a rápida explanação sobre os dois tipos de Estado que se configuram na época atual, e levando em conta as dificuldades do Estado Social e as desigualdades criadas pelo Estado Neoliberal, já deve estar claro preferência pelo modelo Social. A desigualdade é inerente ao modo de produção capitalista, o Estado Social tenta superá-las ou ao menos amenizar suas crises e conseqüências. O Estado Social tem legitimidade para intervir na busca na busca por maior justiça social. O Estado Social detemos meios de violência legais, mais também é um agente atuante na redistribuição de riqueza e regulamentação das relações sociais. O Estado deve ser instrumento de exercício da democracia, deve ser um meio de exercer a liberdade

    A recipe for scavenging in vertebrates - the natural history of a behaviour

Brazeau.Despite its prevalence, the importance of scavenging to carnivores is difficult to ascertain in modern day forms and impossible to study directly in extinct species. Yet, there are certain intrinsic and environmental features of a species that push it towards a scavenging lifestyle. These can be thought of as some of the principal parameters in optimal foraging theory namely, encounter rate and handling time. We use these components to highlight the morphologies and environments that would have been conducive to scavenging over geological time by focusing on the dominant vertebrate groups of the land, sea and air. The result is a synthesis on the natural history of scavenging. The features that make up our qualitative scale of scavenging can be applied to any given species and allow us to judge the likely importance of this foraging behaviour.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Compact beam position monitor using a segmented toroidal coil

    An inductive compact beam position monitor based on a segmented toroidal coil surrounding the charged particle beam has been investigated. It makes use of the induced voltages in the windings instead of the induced charge imbalance on capacitor plates in the popular beam position monitors. We theoretically investigate the response of the coils to the bunched particle beam based on a lumped-element model and compare it to the measurements in the laboratory and in the storage ring COSY in terms of beam displacement. As to the frequency response of the coils, we find a resonant behavior, which may be exploited to further increase the sensitivity of the device. The resolution presently achieved is about 5 μm in a 1 s time interval for a beam current of 0.5 mA
